The Cleveland Browns have signed their first wave of undrafted free agents for 2023. The Cleveland Browns have added to their draft haul by signing nine undrafted free agents to try and help the team. This comes after the Browns drafted seven players during the 2023 NFL Draft, and now have at least 17 rookies to work with heading into the rookie camp portion of the offseason. t’s very likely that many, if not all of these rookies will eventually get released. Most won’t even make the practice team as other rookies become available, and other players from the USFL and XFL become available as well. It should be mentioned that some are reporting the Browns’ signing of Amos Cormier, a cornerback out of Georgia State, except there is no Cormier on the Georgia State roster during the 2022 season. So, he’s not going to be included here. But, until then, these are the extra rookies the Browns were able to procure after the 2023 NFL Draft. Carter, now a Minnesota Viking, was someone who had the look, size, and athletic abilities to be something worth checking out in the NFL. Yet, he fell from the third round, where he was mocked to go, all the way to an undrafted free agent. Sure, the obvious answer is that Andrew Berry didn’t see the value in him, but I’d also argue that he’s gone back-to-back-to-back with wide receivers in the third round, and it’s looking like at least two of them won’t pan out. Jedrick Wills Jr. has two more years to live up to his draft status. The Browns will pick up the fifth-year option on the left tackle’s rookie contract, a league source confirmed to The Chronicle-Telegram on Monday. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler was first to report the news. The deadline is Tuesday. The 2024 option is worth $14.175 million guaranteed based on playing time and a lack of Pro Bowl appearances. Wills was the No. 10 pick in 2020, Andrew Berry’s first selection as a general manager The move was expected, but Berry declined to answer Saturday when asked after the draft. Wills has been inconsistent in his three seasons, but the Browns feel he improved last year and is headed in the right direction. “Jed definitely took strides this year,” coach Kevin Stefanski said after the season. “I think like many young players there are still areas where he can be more consistent, but we definitely thought he took a step forward this season.” The Browns could work on a long-term deal for Wills that would replace the fifth-year option. If they don’t, it’s cheaper than the going rate for the top tackles — $25 million a year for Laremy Tunsil and $23 million for Trent Williams and David Bakhtiari and gives the Browns two more seasons to evaluate if he’s worth an extension. Wills played right tackle in high school in Kentucky and at the University of Alabama but immediately made the switch to the left side with the Browns. His offseason as a rookie was done remotely due to the coronavirus pandemic, but he started 15 regular-season games and two in the playoffs. His second season, in 2021, was sabotaged by an injury. He suffered a high ankle sprain in the opener, tried to play through it, missed two games and was limited when he returned. He missed another two games late in the year with COVID-19. “It was like to the point where after we left the game I couldn’t even walk,” Wills said of the ankle injury in an interview with The Chronicle last offseason. “It was just never the same.” Wills stayed healthy last year and started all 17 games. He had a few of the best games of his career, but the dominance was sporadic and some fans on social media focused on plays where he was beaten or stopped before the play was over. They acquired the pick when they traded down with the Jets from No. 42 in the second round to acquire receiver Elijah Moore. “I’m fired up to play with Deshaun Watson,” Tillman said. “He’s one of the best quarterbacks in the league and I’m really looking forward getting to all my teammates and new brothers and new coaches and stuff, so I’m excited.” The addition of Tillman, Moore, Marquise Goodwin and tight end Jordan Akins represents a major overhaul of the receiving corps, but Browns assistant GM Catherine Raiche noted that a team can’t have too many good pass-catchers. The son of former Broncos receiver Cedric Tillman, Tillman isn’t worried about getting lost in the crowded receiver room. “I’m looking forward to playing with all of those great receivers,” Tillman, 23, said. “I’m very excited. I’ve watched Amari Cooper since his Alabama days, so having one of the best receivers and one of the best route runners being able to learn from him will be huge in my game. So I look forward to it.” Tillman missed six games last season after undergoing ankle surgery, and was limited to 37 catches for 417 yards and three touchdowns. But when he was healthy in 2021, he caught 64 passes for 1,081 yards and 12 TDs. Browns assistant GM Glenn Cook, who watched two of Tillman’s games in person last season, said the Browns were thrilled to land him where they did. “We feel good about his makeup,” Cook said. “We feel good about what he can do. We believe in his ability to learn the game. He’s a smart young man.” Cook said he has it in him to become a No. 1 receiver in the NFL. That would be good for the Browns, because Cooper’s contract is up after next season.
