Conversations: Manzanar Fishing Club

7/1/2020
Many of us understand the sense of freedom provided by fishing. But, many of us will never understand how powerful that sense of freedom was for some. Daniel talks to filmmaker Cory Shiozaki about the dark chapter of concentration camps in the US, which incarcerated over a hundred thousand American citizens. One such concentration camp was Manzanar, in the Eastern Sierra. At Manzanar, some internees risked their lives to sneak out and go fishing, possibly tenkara, in the Eastern Sierra to get some respite, and a sense of freedom and dignity not allowed to them otherwise. Fishing always brings with it a glimmer of hope. But, it can also provide a sense of freedom, and dignity, as the story behind the Manzanar Fishing Club shows us. Listen to their conversation to learn more about how human rights and fishing come together. Learn more at https://www.tenkarausa.com/myportfolio/manzanar-fishing-club/

Tenkara in Salt? A Conversation with Henry Barber + The River Network

11/7/2018
Tenkara is a mountain stream method of fly-fishing, that uses a tenkara rod, line and fly. But, the tenkara rod is also a tool that people all over the world are now using in their own unique way, such as in salt water. To learn more about how people are using tenkara rods, Daniel visited the coast of Maine to fish with Henry Barber, a renowned rock climber who has been using Tenkara USA rods for catching striped bass on the surf, in coastal rivers and from rocks on the coast. After a couple of days of fishing, they sat down by a fire and discussed the experience. And, in the second part of the episode Daniel has a conversation with Nicole Silk, president of the River Network, to learn more about what this cool non-profit has been doing to help protect and restore our rivers. Japan Cast 2018: Ep.2, Hokkaido

6/27/2018
Despite a cold, a scalding hot spring, and language barriers the experience in Hokkaido has been positive overall. Rainbows, Amemasu and oshorokoma have been some of our catches. In this episode I also reflect on the poor treatment of fish in Japan and talk about the experience in general. We still have a few hours of fishing in Hokkaido tomorrow morning before I leave, so it's not over yet. I hope to publish the next episode around July 1st (give or take a day). Short Cast: Garbage

3/26/2018
As fly anglers we are failing at caring for our environment. Although fly-fishing is supposed to bring us closer to our environment and open our eyes to our impacts on it, we continue consuming a mind-boggling amount of plastic and taking actions that are not aligned with our conservation ethos. 80,000 tonnes of plastic are estimated to have gathered at the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (the largest, but 1 of 5 areas in the planet's oceans where most garbage accumulates), source: http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-43490235 This plastic all starts somewhere, and we need to drastically reduce our consumption of it. In this episode we'd like to make a plea for the community of fly-anglers to be more conscious about our impact on the environment. There are some super simple and immediate steps everyone can take that will help: - Use reusable water bottles! Whether at events or fishing outings, have large jugs of water and refill your bottle/cup. The "convenience" of disposable water bottles isn't worth it. - Choose reusable or at least compostable/ paper products rather than plastic/styofoam for your events and trips. - Don't leave your car idling because you need a few extra minutes of air conditioning or to charge your phone (I have seen both of these) - Don't use the straw your server left on the table! Trust me, your cup won't kill you.... This list is just a few things we could start doing immediately...they won't really inconvenience you much and are easy to do. I'd love it if you shared your thoughts with people organizing events that you know, your fishing guide, or just be aware of your own habits. We can all do much better!
