11/20/2023
Andrew M Jones PhD DSc is Professor of Applied Physiology in the Department of Sport and Health Sciences at the University of Exeter. He’s internationally recognized for his research in the control of, and limitations to, skeletal muscle oxidative metabolism; causes of exercise intolerance in health and disease; respiratory physiology, particularly the kinetics of pulmonary gas exchange and ventilation during and following exercise; and sports performance physiology and nutrition, particularly in relation to endurance athletics. Prof Jones has authored more than 350 original research and review articles (>38K citations) and is co-Editor of three books. He is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences, the European College of Sport Science, and the Physiological Society. Jones is Editor-in-Chief of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise and serves on the Editorial Board of six other international journals in sports medicine and exercise science. Prof Jones has acted as a consultant to a number of governing bodies of sport or commercial companies including UK Athletics, the English Institute of Sport, Gatorade Sports Science Institute and Nike Inc. He's been an advisor and consultant to the Breaking 2 and INEOS projects with Eluid Kipchoge and professional endurance athletes including Paula Radcliff. Professor Jones gives his understanding of the evidence of the performance effect of the so called “super shoes” and whether they explain the recent pro marathon runner excess performance and if so, by how much. Amateur marathon runners may find interesting our exchange about the Boston Marathon and how it is getting harder to get into, and what amateur marathoners must do to enhance performance in order to qualify and get into the Boston Marathon today. Professor Jones gives his perspective on the popularized notion that when it comes to marathon training “volume is king” and if not, what would be the alternative. We talk about distance runners that are getting older, and how Professor Jones recommends changing training, if at all, for those looking to remain competitive. Finally, we talk about science and evidence-based nutrition protocol throughout the training cycle and pre-race and race nutrition. EP. 40: The Fastest U.S. Born Black Marathoner Ever/Elite Marathoner Nathan Martin

1/17/2022
A conversation on MLK day with Nathan Martin, the fastest U.S. born black marathoner ever. Nathan set the record for the fastest marathon time by a black man born in the United States at the 2020 Marathon Project with a time of 2:11:05 besting a 41-year-old record held by Herman Atkins. He is also a coach and substitute teacher. He qualified for the Olympic Marathon trials in 2016 and 2020. This past November he finished 8th at the 2021 New York City Marathon, while also being the third American finisher. We talk about his origin story running as a youth, through his college career at Spring Arbor University and how his running developed into the marathon event. We talk about his performance in the 2020 Olympic Marathon trials and what he learned that helped him run a personal record of 2:11:05 at the 2020 Marathon Project where he broke the 1979 record held by Herman Atkins. Nathan gives his thoughts about the significance of that accomplishment and also his thoughts on why we don’t see as many American runners under 2:10, and what Americans can do to compete on the international stage. We talk about his performance at the 2021 New York City Marathon where he came in 8th right behind Kenenisa Bekele and was the third American Overall. Nathan gives his thoughts as an elite runner and coach to the Endurance Experience marathon listeners about the attributes that he believes are important to get faster in the marathon. Finally, as a cross country coach Nathan gives his coaching philosophy and provides advice to youths and parents on considering running as a sport. EP. 38: Athlete Vaccine Hesitancy and Injury Recovery Protocols w/Dr. Jeff Sankoff, M.D.

11/29/2021
A conversation with Dr. Jeff Sankoff, MD. He is an Emergency Physician, long time triathlete and USAT/IRONMAN University Certified coach and an accomplished triathlete himself. He produces the TriDoc Podcast that can be found on most popular podcast platforms and he’s the founder of LifeSport Coaching. We have a conversation about vaccine hesitancy in the athletic arena. In this conversation you’ll see we remain sympathetic to those that have had inequities but at the same, using a couple of the more high-profile cases, we are able to examine some of the common arguments recirculating among some athletic people and groups. Dr. Sankoff gives his thoughts from the perspective of a physician using a science and evidence-based stance. Find out what a doctor would say regarding vaccine hesitancy in the form of the “I am young and fit” narrative or the “I have natural immunity” position. Dr Sankoff also talks about the “personal choice” argument. We transition to a conversation about injury recovery protocols of endurance athletes and Dr. Sankoff lends his expertise to allow the listeners to shape their understanding of what has sound evidence and what does not.
