Alcaraz seals first indoor title, Halep calls time on career and Serena's Super Bowl Moment

2/10/2025
Tennis meets Super Bowl! It's been another memorable week on and off the tennis circuit as hot off the press Serena Williams graced all our TV screens crip walking (!) to Kendrik Lamar at the Super Bowl Halftime Show. Back on the tour, Carlos Alcaraz caught a cold as well as his first ever indoor hard court title with a win in Rotterdam to equal Rafael Nadal, and Belinda Bencic enjoying another successful week in Abu Dhabi, this time as a Mother, to win her 9th career title in just her fourth event back from maternity leave. Meanwhile, Denis Shapovalov stormed to the Dallas Open title, defeating 3 Top 10 players en route and reminding us all of his immense talents, whilst Anastasia Potapova clinched the Translyvania Open, an event at which we saw one of the most successful WTA players of the 2010s, Simona Halep, retire. Chris also tests Kim and Joel’s knowledge of indoor Champions with a new Par for The Courts, and they discuss all the recent tennis x Super Bowl madness on Super Bowl Sunday with the aforementioned Serena Williams popping up plus a Roger Federer TV ad spot with Elmo from Sesame Street. Fight! Davis Cup dust-ups as GB out, WTA spoil Keys return and what next for Novak Djokovic?

2/3/2025
TENNIS WEEKLY CROWDFUND: https://www.gofundme.com/f/tennis-weekly Tennis Weekly 2025 Crowdfund is now open! Your support keeps us going no matter how large or small is hugely appreciated, from listening to donating we couldn’t be more thankful to our audience! Now that the Australian Open is over it’s back to the tour and this week the main focus is the dramatic Davis Cup Qualifiers 1st Round which saw upset and drama pan out across the globe. The main focus was one particular incident between Belgium and Chile that quite literally left Christian Garin floored when Zizou Bergs charged at him and collided at a change of ends. On the ATP tour it was Felix Auger-Aliassime who came out on top after choosing to play the Open Occitanie instead of Davis Cup just for Canada. He won his 7th title in Montpelier and has now almost reversed his 0-8 record in finals and has gone 7-2 since 2022. Elsewhere on the WTA tour there was a maiden 500 victory for Ekaterina Alexandrova who defeated former Australian Open semi-finalist Dayana Yastremska in a hard fought final. Alexandrova even bageled Karolina Muchova on her way to the title. Joel and Chris also answer a mailbag involving Australian Open winner Madison Keys being removed from the entry list of the Austin Open due to a technicality and whether the WTA should be doing more to build the profile of 250s rather than just removing their star players that would mean bums on seats and money in the bank for the smaller tournaments. Australian Open SFs - Keys shocks Swiatek in classic, Djokovic retires to boos, Finals preview

1/24/2025
The Australian Open Finals are SET. Alexander Zverev will face defending champion and World No.1 Jannik Sinner for a chance to win his first Major. The big news from the semifinals was the retirement of Novak Djokovic after losing the first set against the tall german. He was suffering from the same muscle tear that affected him in his quarterfinal win over Carlos Alcaraz and knew going into the match it was unlikely he would be able to finish it. Despite his best efforts on court the Australian crowd booed off their 10 time champion and 24 time grand slam champion for cutting short their afternoon of tennis which reflected badly on the tournament and the aussie fans. Zverev will face 2 time major champion Jannik Sinner in the Final who defeated Ben Shelton after a spirited first set from the american. Sinner steamrolled the last two sets but was seen limping in the third set. Joel and Chris ask - will he be fit for the final and predict who the champion will be on Sunday. On the women’s side there was a HUGE upset and come from behind win for American Madison Keys. Keys a former finalist at slam level previously 8 years ago at the US Open will hope to go one better on Saturday against World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka. Keys caused the biggest upset on the women’s side when she saved match point and then recovered from 5-7 down in a super tie break to secure her spot in the final by defeated Iga Swiatek. Swiatek was so close to setting up a 1 vs 2 final but with the loss Sabalenka will remain the World Number 1 no matter the result on Saturday. Sabalenka will be going for the three-peat and the one thing we know for sure is that there will be some big hitting on Rod Laver in the final! Australian Open QFs - Djokovic defies Alcaraz, Gauff falls short and Swiatek's VAR ball drama

1/22/2025
We're down to the Final 8 in Melbourne Park with Kim and Chris ready to catch up on all the Quarter Final action from the Australian Open. In the men's draw, 10-time Champion Novak Djokovic defied injury and expectation to defeat Carlos Alcaraz in 4 sets whilst Jannik Sinner continued his dominance down under with a thrashing of home hope Alex de Minaur. On the women’s side, Coco Gauff is out to a resurgent Paula Badosa, who will play her good friend and defending Champion Aryna Sabalenka in the semi finals after Sabalenka survived a scare from Pavlyuchenkova. Iga Swiatek carried on her one-sided scoreline dominance over Emma Navarro although controversy arose with a dodgy double bounce debate! In other news, a feather stopped play between Alexander Zverev and Tommy Paul much to the German's annoyance whilst the team give an update on Collect a Set (spoiler alert: scores struggling across the board!). As the men’s seeds struggle Carlos Alcaraz and Sascha Zverev keep getting better and Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka continue to make smooth progress. Elsewhere the Brits are still on a charge, led by the heroic efforts of Jack Draper and former US Open Champion Emma Raducanu. Raducanu beat friend Amanda Anisimova in a tight contest earlier in the day whilst Jack Draper came back from the brink to win in 5 sets against Thanasi Kokkinakis. Danielle Collins caused a stir when she invited the crowd to ‘kiss her a**’ after downing local favourite Destanee Aiava in three sets to progress to the third round. 11/11/2024
Tour finals galore! We're all back once again at Tennis Weekly HQ to look back on the past week of action, which saw Coco Gauff clinch the WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia in thrilling fashion (along with a tasty pay packet). Meanwhile, the ATP Finals got underway in Turin where Carlos Alcaraz suffered an opening defeat to Casper Ruud whilst the trio discuss Stefanos Tsitsipas’s recent social media comments on the new two week Masters 1000 format and argue over whether it should have a future on the circuit. Qualifiers Benjamin Bonzi and Denis Shapovalov also brought home the Metz and Belgrade titles respectively, and Britain’s Cam Norrie reached another ATP Final in a more positive end to a difficult season. Iga Swiatek is also in Malaga as the Billie Jean King Cup Finals begin, looking to end the season on a high after a tricky few months on tour. Joel also tests Kim, Chris and the listeners on recent WTA Finals tour winners! SOCIALS Follow us on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus email the show tennisweeklypod@gmail.com.
