A Toast to Allyship: Finding Community with Bourbon

2/21/2022
Content Warning: This episode features controversial language from an individual who is still growing in their LGBTQ allyship journey. We are choosing not to alter his words. Part of what we do on SQ is have hard, honest conversations and that means not policing guests’ language if they are sincerely trying to be supportive of the LGBTQ+ community. Y’all we move beyond our queer echo chamber and talk to an actual straight, white, male. Randy Sullivan of Bourbon Real Talk chats with India about growing beyond ingrained homophobia, becoming an ally, and using bourbon as a common ground to build diverse communities. We‘re Back! Hello, 2022!

1/19/2022
India and Aubree talk about how beautiful and fun (and COVID safe) India and Alyson’s wedding was. And we spend a lot of time talking about how genuinely great India’s mom is. And we admit that putting out a podcast as life starts to return to normal can be difficult as a small two person team. We have so many great episodes coming up in 2022 and we’re excited to be back! Since Aubree explained Ungrading so poorly, you can learn more about it in Susan Bloom’s edited book on the subject, Ungrading: Why Rating Students Undermine Learning. If you’re planning your own LGBTQ Wedding, Kirsten Palladino’s book, Equally Wed: The Ultimate Guide to Planning Your LGBTQ+ Wedding, is the gold standard book to check out. Queer Culture in Mexico with Mila Villasana

11/5/2021
We talk to one of India’s best friends, Mila Villasana, a freelance Mexican illustrator and designer. These long time friends talk about finding their queer identities and how it intersects with their Mexican identities, developing a sense of community, growing up in Mexico, and the country’s shifting LGBTQ culture. Yes, Aubree’s here too, but it is mainly a sweet catch up between two friends! You can see some of Mila’s work on Instagram at @misskiwifish. To learn more about Mexican lesbian culture, we’d like to recommend: Tortilleras Negotiating Intimacy: Love, Friendship, and Sex in Queer Mexico City by Anahi Russo Garrido -https://amzn.to/3kaTxSL and the new book, Wild Hearts Can’t Be Tamed: 15 Voices from the Latinx Diaspora https://amzn.to/3q9HbhM, both are available on Amazon and our Bookshop.org page*. Queerly I Do: Part 6: Maybe I Don't?

6/23/2021
Our “Queerly I Do” series is our look at what is going on in the world of gay marriage or LGBTQ weddings, with a southern twist. Why did the queer community push so hard for marriage in the first place, were there other fights we should have been focusing on, and should LGBTQ people participate in such a cis/straight institution in the first place? In our last episode of the series we talk to Dr. Mary Bernstein, Professor of Sociology at the University of Connecticut. She is an expert on LGBTQ social movements, as well as movement intersectionality on issues of race, gender identity, and sexual orientation, and gun violence prevention advocacy. Mary was a joy for Aubree to talk to and we greatly appreciate her time. Find out more about Prof. Bernstein here: https://sociology.uconn.edu/person/mary-bernstein That’s it for our Wedding series. We’ll be back soon with more interviews with other great people LGBTQ people in the south. In the meantime, we want to know what you think about the show.
