Weh Yeoh - Good charities die young

12/11/2023
Weh Yeoh realised that there was so much more he could do with his Physiotherapy degree than hands on, 1 on 1 clinical work. It was a combination of his physio training, clinical experience, and his travels (volunteering and working for charity overseas) that made him realise that the standard charity business model is broken. If a charity grows, then it may not actually be doing the right job, and it might actually be harming the communities that it is supposedly serving. Charities are so often more focussed on band aid solutions, rather than solving the problem that caused the issue in the first place, and get stuck in the funding "hamster wheel" with a constant need to justify their existence. Instead of indefinite burden relief, if charities aimed to be the catalyst for change, involving 3rd parties like local government or the private sector, and set firm dates in the calendar for when they will hand over the work to locals ( in effect make themselves redundant) they can have a far greater, and more sustainable impact. The concept of redundant charities is one which Weh firmly believes in, so much so, he has implemented it into his charity OIC Cambodia and written a whole book about it. It's a challenging read, especially if you are inclined to donate to charity, or run a charity yourself. And that's why it's great. It forces you to actually consider what makes a good cause, centred around 1 key question When does the charity plan to leave? This was a great chat, I really enjoyed the challenges, and I learnt a lot in the process. Enjoy! Geraldine Hickey - The real stories beneath the comedy

11/30/2023
Geraldine Hickey makes me laugh, which is good, because that's her job. But it's the way she makes me laugh is what I like about her so much, through humorous anecdotes, and real stories about her life. You see, you'll struggle to find a more genuine person, willing to share the vulnerable details of their world, in this case, through the medium of comedy. And it's not an act. Our conversations on, and off the recording were by all accounts the same, with Geraldine, and her laid back approach, laughing at the mundane, and taking a genuine interest in the people she meets. She is an ally for minorities, and a strong advocate for the queer community. She talks about her own somewhat challenging past with sexuality, and wanting to help others. I laughed a lot during this interview, but we also touched on some of the real stories that happen off stage. Geraldine is a good egg. I think you'll love this one. Louise Larkin - The friend you never knew you had

11/22/2023
While driving her car one day, Louise Larkin heard an interview on the radio that would change the course of her life. She heard the sad story of a young boy, who was left broken hearted after no one turned up to his birthday party, despite his parents attempts at throwing a great party. This lit a fire in her belly, and after some conversations with some friends, she decided to throw a birthday party for any child who was feeling left out, an all inclusive get together where kids could feel free to be themselves. She expected 30-50 people, but 350 people turned up which was both surprising, and disheartening. So, she threw more parties, and quickly realised that a large portion of the kids who were coming were unwell, or living with disability. The calling was too strong, and Louise decided to commit to the cause full time, leaving her executive role, and ploughing headfirst into what was now aptly named "Friend In Me" a registered charity which now caters not only for kids and inclusion, but also for the parents of kids who require full time care. In the podcast Louise talks about what drives her passion, who she is helping, and how she navigates the competitive landscape of charities and funding. She has a big heart, and works really hard for the kids. This story will fill your bucket for sure. 11/2/2023
At just 12 years of age, Tommy Quick survived a stroke, and had to learn to walk again and talk again, and try to live a normal life with his new disability, and it was damn hard. But as it turns out, Tommy Quick is an unstoppable force, completing high school, achieving a degree in Nutrition, and even hiking the Kokoda Track. But a conversation with a mate at a coffee shop planted the seed for an epic adventure, one which would eventually be called The 4 Points Australia - a 9000+km ride to the 4 most extreme points of the Australian mainland on Tommy's recumbent trike. Tommy wanted to raise awareness for Stroke, especially young stroke, and be an advocate for inclusion On the 22nd of October 2023, Tommy rode into Footscray Rowing club with 30 odd riders in tow, and to the applause of a huge crowd of spectators, completing the journey after almost 10,000kms and hundreds of days of riding. It's an epic adventure, of which he spent a few thousand kms riding with David Jones, a local musician, volunteer, and former teacher who had originally volunteered to help tutor Tommy through his degree, years before. They encountered all sorts of hurdles along the way, overcoming mechanical issues, injury, and even road rage, but Tommy unwavering pursuit of his goal, and David's support gave them the endurance to finish on a high, completing the ride, and raising well over $100,000 for the Stroke foundation. Dr Matthew Read - Putting AI Technology Under The Knife

10/26/2023
Dr Matthew Read was pretty young when he knew he wanted to be a surgeon. Having been exposed to medical clinics which were managed by his mother, and having the aptitude for fixing problems, his vision of his future was pretty clear. But, as he discovered, there is never a straight line between dreams and success, and for over 20 years Matthew pursued medical study, facing rejection, and even a stint in the army before getting to where he is now, a multi award winning Upper GI (gastro intestinal) surgeon operating out of St Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. Dr Read is also a board member of The Hope Fund a charity created by expert medical practitioners, who mission is to raise money for research into Upper GI diseases which traditionally don't active much funding, but who's outcomes for patients are poor. They also raise awareness for these diseases, which could be easily branded "unsexy cancers". Not happy with just changing lives on the operating table, Matthew is also working on technology used during surgery which will enable real time assistance and coaching from experts around the globe, increasing countries like Kenya's access to appropriate treatment, where currently there is very little. He is also passionate about reducing the waste in surgical procedures, which can, not only save money and the environment, but reduce time wasted making the surgery time more effective, reducing the wait times for people who are desperately needing the treatment. Dr Matthew Read is on my list of "ones to watch", I'm certain we will see much more of him in the future, and it was an honour to be part of his first podcast. It will no be his last, that I can assure you. If you love this episode, make sure you tell a friend about it!! Emma MacGregor - Sustainability that came from non events

10/19/2023
Emma MacGregor reached a point in her life where she had achieved everything that was expected of her. She went to Uni, she got married, had kids, but had a the lingering feeling that there is more she should do. Event management is her trade, but after losing her dream job at the beginning of COVID, Emma took matters into her own hands, creating an initiative called the "Out Of Work Bakers" in the local community to help unemployed hospitality and event staff earn a few extra bucks from baking delicious goods while also giving them purpose through lock down. This lead to the creation of Positive Feeds, a gifting service using local, sustainable products, which gave people a way to both give their clients, staff, or friends something special while supporting local producers, and the environment. Emma also created Footprint Group Events who's aim is to create amazing events and functions, while using the many years of experience to reduce the environmental impact of grand occasions. This is a story of resilience, and the drive to build something from day 1, that does some good, even if it's DAMN HARD!! Peter Baines OAM - Terrorism, Tsunamis, and Thai Charities

10/12/2023
As a young cop, Peter Baines knew he had a bigger purpose. He couldn't have guessed though, the he would be involved in the largest Disaster Victim Identification task in history, or that he would raise over $30m for charity. After choosing a path in forensics, Peter quickly climbed the ranks, which lead him to be called up as part of an international forensic squad, charged with identifying the remains of the 200+ victims of the Bali bombings, and then the 5000+ victims of the 2004 boxing day tsunami in Thailand. What became clear, was that the affected communities were left to try and rebuild, and many children were left without parents and families. in 2005, Peter created Hands Across The Water, A charity which started out by building a home for some of these orphaned children, and which has grown, now providing life saving necessities, and supporting educational endeavours so that the recipients can improve the quality of both their own life, and the lives of those in their communities. Hands Across The Water raises funds in part, from running cycling tours through beautiful rural Thailand, where riders must reach fund raising goals to qualify to participate. Peter's story is surreal at times, and devastating at others, but the experiences he has been through have taught him invaluable life lessons of resilience, determination, and leadership. I am extremely grateful to have been able to spend the time exploring Peter's past, and I'm sure this will be a very popular episode. Make sure if you love it, tell your friends about it, too! Amelia Pickering - Prison positivity, and life's possibilities

10/3/2023
Have you ever thought about what it's like to re enter society after serving a prison sentence? We watch glorified TV shows about crime, lawyers, and even some popular shows set inside prisons, but we don't tend to pay much attention to ex-prisoners who have re joined the community, which is strange given that almost all of them are eventually released. For many, life has moved and changed too quickly, and the process is overwhelming, leading to a high rate of re-incarceration But when they are supported, the statistics are very different, and Amelia Pickering and her team at Prison Network are doing amazing work with female inmates, giving hope and joy, and removing many of the major barriers to leading a fulfilling life beyond the iron bars. Prison network's origins date back in 1946 when Myrtle Breen wanted to support the female inmates in Pentridge Prison. After being allowed to visit the women (resulting in positive impact) she was invited back for weekly visits, and almost 80 years later they continue to regularly visit inmates, as well as support them after they have served their time. Amelia tells us her story of her migration to Australia, and how her career led her to become the CEO of this wonderful organisation. I really got a lot out of this episode, I hope you do too! Enjoy! Bonus Episode - Chris Farrell and Jess McDonald T-shirts, Research and Footy!

9/19/2023
It's school holidays, so for a change of pace, I invited Chris Farrell - (Neighbours/The Hope Fund - ep21) and Jess McDonald (High Tees Australia - ep11) to come to the studio for a coffee and chat. Chris barracks for the Carlton Blues, while Jess is a fanatical Melbourne Demons supporter, so I played a dirty trick on them, inviting them to wear their football colours, without telling them who they each barracked for. It ended up in some hilarious moments. We talk about Jess's "Community" T-shirt and impact it is making for West Welcome Wagon, who do amazing charity work in the west of Melbourne We also chat about The Hope Fund and how Chris and the team are making a difference in the area of research for underfunded health issues, or "unsexy cancers" - cancers which don't gain as much attention in the media, but are often more deadly. AND, we talk a lot of footy. It's finals fever in Melbourne, and the banter was thick and plentiful especially due to the recent nail biter between Carlton and Melbourne... We'll be bringing you more great interviews right after the holidays, so make sure you stay tuned. There's some massive interviews coming. Ryan Abramowitz - The elephant in the room

9/14/2023
Ryan Abramowitz was in Copenhagen when he learnt that his father had died from suicide. It was an event that would change his life, and leave deep scars with him and his family. He discovered through the grieving process that there weren't many options when it came to books to help people understand, and work through the grief of losing a parent or loved one after suicide, and with around 3500 people per year taking their own life, there seemed to be a real need. During the cold winter nights of the pandemic lockdowns, Ryan began creating a picture book which, through the power of the combined words and pictures, and characters represented as animals, would help young people understand and work through the unimaginably tough time in their life. After MANY iterations, and consultations with experts, Ryan finally finished his book, which he launched in conjunction with world suicide prevention day . He also decided from the start that 18% of all profits will be given to charity, to help conquer the most terminal of mental health issues. Ryan is an incredibly intelligent and articulate individual, who let me into his inner sanctum, sharing a very personal story, which has a really powerful message. Thank you Ryan! Kelly Barrett - Brief solutions for human problems

9/7/2023
Kelly Barrett decided from a very young age that she had to take control of her own destiny. She's a firm believer that the game of life isn't played on a level playing field, so she was determined not to let her humble beginnings in the commission flats in Werribee, shape her future for her. Having been served her fair share of back fortune, Kelly's resilience and determination were key to finding the gold at the end of the rainbow. Hard work, and a handful of sliding door moments presented opportunities which Kelly managed to convert into education and career building moments, and eventually to creating her own company designing underwear. But Kelly needed more, and after seeing the impact other organisations were having through the bushfires of 2019, she knew what she had to do. She set out to create and underwear brand that not only makes quality products, but gives back to the community and environment at every turn. And so, Underwear For Humanity was born, pioneering underwear recycling, giving to charity, ethical production, and even giving opportunity to the organisations who pack the orders. Kelly was extremely honest and vulnerable in this interview, It's a story she has never fully told before and I thank her for putting it all out there for us, so that we can take some of the lessons for ourselves. Evana De Lune - The power of dance, and self love

8/30/2023
Since the day she was born, Evana De Lune was destined for the stage. Performance is in her DNA, having been dancing since a very young age, but a chance trip to a burlesque class, opened her eyes to a whole new world of performance. She was so hooked by what she saw, she has been performing as a burlesque dancer ever since. The entertainment industry was shattered when the pandemic set in, but where there's will, there's a way, and Evana took to online in an attempt to salvage her career, and to keep doing what she loves the most. The plan worked, and her social media profile exploded, giving her both platforms to continue performing, but also a fan base who were eager for her live performances once lockdowns finally ended. Evana is one of Australia's most sought after burlesque performers, regularly flying interstate to perform, and also to teach the art form to others. What she discovered when she started teaching though, is our favourite part. The people attending the classes often have a story to tell, themselves. They come to find (or re-find) their sensuality and sexuality after often, very traumatic experiences, like long abusive relationships. The dance students give themselves permission to move their bodies in new ways and be free of their past, which results in huge improvement in personal worth and self love. Evana has taught people as old as 75, proving that sexuality, confidence, and self worth are not limited by age. The podcast explores the history of burleque, and how it has evolved over the years, and how it's dazzling displays of provocative dance, is still as relevant today as it was all those years ago. We also talk about how important self love is, follow your dreams, and to never give up. Enjoy! Scott Miller - Purpose over profit, and the freedom machine

8/22/2023
Scott Miller wasn't far into his corporate career when he decided that working in big oil wasn't for him. Coming from a family of entrepreneurs, he was destined to follow in their footsteps climbing the corporate ladder, business was the mantra, but it quickly became clear that his personal values didn't align, and so he jumped ship (or rig?) perusing study in the healthcare industry Since then, Scott been on an inspiring journey of healthcare, leading to philanthropic roles and leading volunteers, which has confirmed instincts, and unveiled the importance of the person questions around life purpose. Jack Simpson - La Creme De La Crema

8/15/2023
Jack Simpson says the best thing about being an apprentice carpenter, was getting to go to great coffee shops all over Melbourne. It was the best part of his day. Truth is, he didn't really like carpentry, but started to really love coffee. One chance day, he walked into a great cafe in Brighton who had a sign on the window looking for baristas, and so, Jack took a leap. With no experience, Jack assumed he wouldn't make the cut, but the owners saw his enthusiasm and potential, and offered him a shot at the role, so Jack quit his apprenticeship, and charged head first into his new career. Fast forward to 2023, and Jack Simpson is not just another Melbourne barista, he's is now the Australian Barista Champion, and is leading innovation in the coffee industry. He describes the competitions being akin to F1 for motor vehicles. The competitors innovate and implement new techniques and equipment, on the ultimate quest for the perfect cup of coffee, which eventually filters down into the average corner cafe. The changes in technology since he started are huge, with all sorts of machines finding their way into the average cafe, and Jack has proven he is at the forefront of innovation. Jack wants to embrace the tech, and use it not to do his job for him, but to allow him time and space to improve other elements of coffee making. Word of warning, this is serious business, and to Jack, 1% improvements can make of break your chance of winning the title or not. In the podcast, Jack tells us about his recent adventures to compete in the World Barista championships in Greece, and what crazy lengths they will go to, to make the perfect coffee. Jack is also an old friend, so it gives me great pleasure to see him rise to the top, the creme de la crema if you will... David Laity - Where there's a Goodwill, there's a Good Way

8/10/2023
Black Saturday will always be remembered as one of the worst days in the history of Victoria. But it should also be remembered as the day that David Laity was forced to think about his life, and his purpose. His media production company AND side hustle were both destroyed by the horrific fires which burnt so much of northern Victoria, and took so many lives. He and his partner were literally was left with nothing except a small amount of possessions, and their dog. Thanks to the generosity of so many Australians, charities were able to give essentials and money to the victims to help get them back on their feet. But David decided to take a different path. Instead of buying essentials to get back to normality, he decided to use the money to start a business which was designed to give back, and raise money for the charities which helped him out in his time of need. And so, Goodwill Wine was created. Goodwill wines rescues high quality wine which has been bottled, but for some reason or another, hasn't been sold and is sitting, gathering dust in the back of a vineyards warehouse. Often, It's something as simple as the wrong colour lid was used, and other times, the company who ordered the wine has gone out of business, leaving the vinyeard with a surplus. David hand chooses each batch, re labels them, and sells them on his website goodwillwine.com.au Each purchase raises money for a charity of the buyers choice and recently Goodwill Wine celebrated reaching the $500,000 donated milestone. You read that correctly, HALF A MILLION DOLLARS!! Unreal isn't it!! It's a beautiful confluence of good outcomes, and we love it so much. David is a good guy, and I'm so glad we got to interview him on The Good People Podcast Make sure to jump onto the Goodwill Wine website and take a look at some of the things they have done. It's so inspiring. https://goodwillwine.com.au/ Follow The Good People Podcast on social media and on the In Other Good News Website Instagram Facebook Twitter Youtube In Other Good News Love what we do? Zac Lewis - Empowering youth to reach their full potential

8/2/2023
Talent is everywhere, but opportunity is limited by your postcode. Zac Lewis is the CEO of Western Chances, and organisation devoted to empowering young people to achieve their potential. There is an unfortunate, and very real correlation between life opportunities, and the postcode you live in. Western Chances is built on the idea of levelling the playing field for young people who limit their goals based on their financial situation. Zac will tell you, that it is amazing to see what can happen when you remove the barrier of cost to education, allowing people to purchase things like laptops and text books, or even the simple things like transport tickets and stationary. Each year they are growing, and are now awarding around 850 scholarships per year to kids with dreams of creating a better life for themselves, and their families. Western Chances has produced Doctors, Surgeons, Dancers, Engineers, Artists, Musicians, you name it, and most of which because of the scholarships they received which not only helped financially, but gave them belief in themselves. The recipients of the Western Chances scholarships are the next generation of community leaders, it's really inspiring stuff. Zac is a great guy, and certainly the right person to take on the task of lifting the youth. This episode is filled with the moving stories of people who have gone on to live their best lives. Adam Sarfati had already started trying to change the world for the better before the pandemic hit, but the COVID lockdowns combined with the increase in online shopping was the perfect time for Heaps Good Packaging to launch. People want to do the right thing, and the original Heaps Good mailing satchel (a revolutionary product which is home compostable) gave online retailers an eco friendly way to ship the thousands of orders going out every day. It was an instant success! Adam tells us how his little idea of a 1 product, eco friendly mailer shop, quickly turned into a thriving multi-product store, always with the goal of closing the loop on eco solutions. It's an intriguing insight into the world of packaging, a topic which wouldn't normally get air time, but so critical to the environment. Heaps Good are constantly working on new ways to reduce the impact on the environment through better, more eco and sustainable products.
