MaidSafe - An Interview with Dug Campbell

9/3/2018
Episode 3: An Interview with Dug Campbell From MaidSafe In this episode of the Crypto Quest podcast we catch up with Dug Campbell, Head of Marketing & Outreach at Maidsafe to talk about their project that is reimagining the very fabric of the internet itself. MaidSafe has the very ambitious yet very clear aim of building a new and improved version of the internet called the SAFE Network. Their view, held by many others around the world, is that the internet is fundamentally broken. In an increasingly connected world the current internet infrastructure does little to ensure the privacy and data security of it’s users and its design lends itself to the consolidation of huge information power brokers like Google, Amazon and Facebook. The societal implications this has for the world are becoming clearer each day with evidence suggesting that this wide scale collection and processing of data can unfairly influence elections, compromise our personal privacy and encroach on basic freedoms. MaidSafe seeks to address these issues directly with the creation of the SAFE Network – the world’s first autonomous and decentralised data network that claims to offer data security and complete privacy to its users by adhering to these principles from the very base level of its design. In the interview Dug helps us understand the problems and inequalities that the current internet infrastructure causes and talks us through how the systems MaidSafe are developing will mitigate these issues on their own network. In this episode we explore: Disclaimer: I was not paid to promote Maidsafe and I do not currently own any Maidsafecoin. I undertook this interview as in my opinion MAIDSAFE are developing some extremely interesting technology with a real use case. The team have been working diligently on this since 2006, long before Bitcoin was launched and have not wavered from their course. Definitely a project worth keeping an eye on. Cryptocurrency Trading Addiction Pt 2 – An Addict’s Story

9/3/2018
Episode 2: Cryptocurrency Trading Addiction Pt 2 – An Addict’s Story In this episode of the Crypto Quest Podcast we continue our exploration of Cryptocurrency trading addiction. Last episode we spoke to Tony Marini, specialist therapist at the world’s first cryptocurrency addiction clinic, Castle Craig Hospital. If you missed that episode you can catch up here. For this episode we were lucky enough to get the chance to interview “Mark” a patient at Castle Craig who has suffered with addiction and found himself venturing into the world of cryptocurrency trading. Marks’ story is well worth listening to. A businessman worth north of $100mn, Mark is no stranger to success. He has grown and sold multiple global businesses but for all these successes has continued to struggle with addiction for many years. Mark gives unique insight into what it means to be an addict. He is open and candid about his prowess as a businessman but also completely accepting and open about his long struggle with various addictions. His story highlights that addiction is an affliction that should not just be associated with unsuccessful people with poor judgement. Mark tells us his story as multiple addictive traits eventually led him to also “gambling” on Bitcoin prices. Mark wouldn’t necessarily call this a bad experience, after-all, he made significant sums of money. However, for that financial success there were significant costs in other areas of his life. Thankfully Mark is doing well and it shows in his positivity and openness. His self-awareness is clear throughout this interview, and I for one very much hope this is a sign that whilst he may always consider himself an ‘addict’ he is now the one in control of his ultimate destiny. A huge thanks to Mark for being so brutally honest in an effort to help others understand the real damage addiction can cause, something he should be applauded for. Cryptocurrency Trading Addiction with Tony Marini

9/3/2018
Episode 1: Cryptocurrency Trading Addiction with Tony Marini In this episode of the Crypto Quest Podcast we head over to Castle Craig Hospital in Peeblesshire, Scotland to interview specialist therapist Tony Marini. Castle Craig is the largest addiction treatment hospital in the UK and since it’s founding in 1988 has treated more than 10,000 patients. The hospital gained some real interest in the crypto community recently when they became the first clinic to announce that they were actively helping people who had become addicted to the heady highs and desperate lows that can come with trading cryptocurrencies. The clinic is set in a remote and stunning Scottish landscape far removed from modern technology and the distractions of modern life and it’s private clinic is now world renowned for offering some of the most innovative approaches to tackling addiction. In this interview Tony helps to explain the fundamental challenges addicts face and how easily addictive behaviours will spread from one vice to another. This helps us to understand that cryptocurrency trading addiction is not ‘new’, special or different from any other type of destructive compulsive behaviour but represents a new vice that current addicts can be easily drawn into. Tony himself will accept that he is not a ‘cryptocurrency expert’ but asserts that this doesn’t matter. His approach to tackling addiction varies little regardless of the focus of a patient’s addiction. He doesn’t think there is anything ‘inherently’ bad about Bitcoin or cryptocurrencies, in fact he is very open to these new technologies, but he does want to underline that what is a genuine passion for many can be the source of real problems for many more. The interview with Tony was fascinating. He helps us understand addiction with colourful and candid stories from his own life and leaves us all with some great advice on how to monitor and be objective about our own behaviours in all aspects of our lives. I left the interview with Tony feeling uplifted and more grounded. Whilst I don’t aggressively trade cryptocurrencies I am not immune to the emotions attached to dramatic price swings and I feel Tony’s sage advice can help us all be more mindful of the pitfalls people can fall into.
