The Robot The Creator (2022)

3/24/2024
Can a robot become so intelligent that it acquires a human soul, and can we make it sexy? These are questions posed by THE ROBOT THE CREATOR by director Jasmine Deanne Andrews (sulliedbride.com) and co-writer Aaron R Sampson, a truly remarkable DIY Christian film with a huge amount of imagination, delivering an uncompromisingly ambitious story about killer robots and CIA laboratories but filmed on no budget in random people’s houses. The government asks a dream team of robotics scientists to continue their research years after one of their robots programmed with the “kill kill kill command” goes on a (you guessed it) killing spree, and the team reluctantly reassembles to perfect their research in a more ethical manner. They resurrect their experiment, a female robot named Auto Mae, but tragedy strikes after the team teaches her the comedy of Looney Tunes and she pushes a scientist off of a cliff because she thinks it would be funny (this is the actual plot of the movie). Auto Mae’s natural intelligence makes her curious about the creator of humanity, but ultimately, the human folly of imitating God by creating a robot is too big of a sin for God to ignore. Can the world’s top robotics team close Pandora’s Box before it’s too late? My King (2021) TEASER

3/17/2024
Subscribe today for access to our full catalog of bonus episodes, including 2+ new episodes every month! www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy Hello to all of the beautiful kings and queens listening to our podcast. This one’s for you. Ever since we watched director Kenya Cagle’s magnum opus THE BOY WHO SAW CHRIST, we’re committed to exploring the rest of his Caglevision catalog. Our next pick is MY KING, a romantic thriller about a Christian couple engaged to be married and the evil forces conspiring to keep them apart. Andrea works a high level job at Synray, a company that doesn’t seem to do anything other than maintain a stressful office atmosphere. Andrea’s boss, Mr. Pierre, is an old flame who may have once drugged and sexually assaulted her at a college party. Her only workplace confidante Miriam may have been complicit in the assault and even selected the roofie that drugged Andrea (???). Andrea’s fiancé Alfred has struggles of his own, between his millionaire parents who don’t support his relationship and the fact that quarantine has made it hard for him to find a job. When Alfred is mysteriously recruited to be Andrea’s coworker at Synray, it seems like that should be the end of the couple’s troubles, but it’s actually the beginning of a twisted game that threatens to ruin their lives forever. Kenya Cagle is the master of plot escalation and MY KING is a deceptively slow burn that builds to a genuinely insane climax. Caglevision films are not for the faint of heart — only for those of royal taste and regal temperament. The Boy Who Saw Christ (2023)

3/10/2024
What would you do if Christ hugged you in the church bathroom? Eight-year-old Kenneth immediately tells his parents, expecting them to be delighted, only to see them freak out and interrupt the entire church service to try to investigate who exactly is the man who hugged their son in the bathroom. It’s actually a pretty natural reaction, but we’re so used to faith-based films about magical Christ-like children wowing the grownups in their lives with barely any pushback on their stories that we were shocked that this molestation investigation arc took up a good portion of the plot of THE BOY WHO SAW CHRIST. This is the first film we’ve watched by director Kenya Cagle, but it will absolutely not be the last. Mr. Cagle is a singular auteur with a fascinating style and a bizarre website where you can buy a duffel bag with his film posters printed on it for $80. His vision is powerful and comes through despite his technical limitations; in fact he is able to use his resources well to tell a complex story of divine apparitions, resurrections from the dead, mental illness, and preaching the Word to Muslims with nothing more than a digital camera and some devoted actors. We decided to review THE BOY WHO SAW CHRIST solely based on its compelling title and amazing cover art, but it instantly became one of our new favorite films. Persecuted (2014) TEASER

Subscribe today for access to our full catalog of bonus episodes, including 2+ new episodes every month! www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy Society keeps finding new ways to persecute Christians for having the correct faith and worldview. In director Daniel Lusko’s (JINGLE SMELLS) political thriller PERSECUTED, devout Christians feel threatened by a new law called the “Faith and Fairness Act”. This law attempts to make the religious landscape in America more “fair” in some vague way that we at Boys’ Bible Study unfortunately were not able to understand despite all three of us watching the the movie separately and trying to pay attention to it. Nonetheless, the vibes are off in America and only one man, the famous TV pastor John Luther, seems to be able to wield the power and influence needed to prevent this law from passing. When John uses his platform to challenge the American government, they attempt to silence him by making it look like he killed a girl in a car crash. Now disgraced and on the run as a fugitive, can John salvage his reputation while also preventing the country from becoming more fair? PERSECUTED is very typical of Christian films made at the end of the Obama era, when Christians vented their frustrations about liberal hegemony by imagining themselves as righteous warriors struggling against a political conspiracy. Eyes Front (2008) feat. Josh Martin

2/25/2024
If God doesn’t exist, then how can you tell a good movie from a bad one? We ask ourselves this while attempting to review EYES FRONT, an extremely stylized feature from prolific music video director turned Christian film auteur Darren Doane. We first learned about Doane from his work on KIRK CAMERON’S SAVING CHRISTMAS, which Doane directs and co-stars in as a man who is missing the true spirit of Christmas. Doane seems to have an ability to pull more “famous” names than we’re usually accustomed to seeing in faith-based features; Michael Madsen stars in EYES FRONT, playing a gritty narrator on the run from the law after he kills his wife in a rage and dumps her body in the trunk of his car. His story is intertwined with the life of another murderer who was clearly inspired by American Psycho and is portrayed by Christopher Stapleton (not to be confused with the singer of the same name.) We also see this character kill out of rage, go on some cynical rants about his ex-girlfriend and how vegetarianism is stupid, and finally lash out once more at his identical twin brother who is a devout Christian. When two murderers and two twins’ lives intertwine at a final showdown in a diner, you won’t believe what happens next, and the reason you won’t is honestly because the story kind of degrades here and it’s very hard to gauge what is going on. Despite this, we appreciate a Christian film that is genuinely different than all the others we’ve watched, especially one that uses swears, including the dreaded “f-word”. Our friend and Christian music expert Josh Martin (Uncomfortable Brunch) returns to the show for the 3rd time to help us give this film some necessary context, especially with regards to its jam-packed soundtrack. Check out Uncomfortable Brunch, Josh's screening in the Orlando, FL area. The Potwins (TEASER)

Subscribe today for access to our full catalog of bonus episodes, including 2+ new episodes every month! www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy The fictional First Family of conservative entertainment, THE POTWINS, are back with new episodes of their show after a several year hiatus. Portrayed by an all star cast, including Kevin Sorbo, Barry Bostwick, and special guest star Jon Lovitz, THE POTWINS are a family of greatly differing political views who still manage to find common ground with each other. We previously reviewed this show in its earlier incarnation as THE WORLD ACCORDING TO BILLY POTWIN, which starred Jonah Britton (possibly the son of writer/director Lenny Britton) as an intellectually precocious young libertarian who is able to mischievously outsmart all the adults in his life, especially the dumb liberals. Billy is back but takes a smaller role in favor of Kevin Sorbo’s lead role as patriarch Nate Potwin, whose more sensible, “Can’t we all just get along?” vibe echoes the theme of the show. THE POTWINS is now being marketed as the official show of X (formerly Twitter), despite a lack of official endorsement from X CEO Elon Musk or any other X staff. Nevertheless, new THE POTWINS episodes are being uploaded on there with the handle @TheShowOnX in case you were ever craving watching a 20 minute conservative sitcom on your phone as you scroll through memes. The debut episode of THE POTWINS is called “Blue Caller” and it’s a comedy of errors where an idiotic liberal gay couple is suing Nate Potwin when a misunderstanding leads them to believe Nate is violating their constitutional rights by denying them service at his hardware store. Has the whole world gone mad? (This is literally a line from the show.) What Is True Love? (2015)

2/11/2024
For a wholesome Valentine’s Day message, we turn to the Christian denomination most versed in the art of love: the Jehovah’s Witnesses. We love any opportunity to repeat our hot take that the Jehovah’s Witnesses (JWs) are the best filmmakers in all of Christianity; their productions are high quality, their actors are poised, and their branding and aesthetics are impeccable. We’ve learned through their films that the JWs absolutely HATE working long hours (because it disrupts their religious routine). They have ultra conservative social views and do not fraternize with LGBT people or really anyone at all who promotes worldly values that contradict “The Truth”. Family is important to them; in fact, even older teens must run all of their life and relationship decisions through their parents. The dating lives of JW teens are just one of the many topics covered in WHAT IS TRUE LOVE?, a film primarily about teenage infatuation and how it must be controlled by leaning on Jehovah. Protagonist Liz becomes “interested” in Zach, a classmate at her high school who has recently converted to JW, but is terribly disappointed when her parents refuse to allow them to date due to the fact that Zach is unbaptized and “high risk”. Liz’s fellow JW friend Meg ignores the red flags and begins dating Zach after Liz rejects him. Meg and Zach’s lives are completely ruined by this hasty decision to elope, which causes disgrace to their families and friends and threatens the couple’s chances at eternal life. Meanwhile, the prudent Liz gets another chance at love when a chance encounter with the hunky John makes her believe that he could one day become her “spiritual head”. A happy ending is only possible through Jehovah, and here at Boys’ Bible Study we love happy endings! All of your friends and family who are much better than you have been raptured, yet you’re stuck here alone on earth. If you look out the window right now, it’s highly likely you’ll observe thermonuclear war. It’s never been more over for you… or is it? A transmission from the LEFT BEHIND cinematic universe might be just the kick you need to get you inspired to make the most of your life post-rapture. Marketed as a piece of genuine found footage from a church group, HAVE YOU BEEN LEFT BEHIND? sells itself as a VHS tape providing life advice for those “left behind”, but it’s actually a cleverly staged y2k era viral marketing stunt for the LEFT BEHIND series of books and films. On the tape, a Pastor Vernon Billings warmly greets the viewer, telling them they have another chance to find salvation in this life — but eagle-eared LEFT BEHIND fans might recognize this pastor as a minor character from the series. The VHS tape jacket and contents leave some hints to this connection, but this interesting artifact of Christian ARG marketing has still fooled a lot of people over the years into believing it’s genuine. The Bible Boys discuss the tape’s take on rapture theology and also take time to investigate LEFT BEHIND: ETERNAL FORCES, the now-defunct Christian real-time strategy PC game also based on the famous series. The Unexpected Bar Mitzvah (2015)

1/28/2024
Baruch atah Adonai, y’all! We’re back exploring the exciting filmography of director Chip Rossetti and his co-director/writer/muse Donald James Parker, aka “Gramps” of GRAMPS GOES TO COLLEGE fame. Both of these men are artists we at Boys’ Bible Study consider powerhouses of the DIY Christian film community. We’re excited to tentatively declare THE UNEXPECTED BAR MITZVAH the best film we’ve seen so far coming from their longtime collaboration, which is remarkable given the strength of GRAMPS GOES TO COLLEGE, the film that singlehandedly took on the evils of evolution, teen horniness, and binge drinking. Donald James Parker’s script for THE UNEXPECTED BAR MITZVAH is remarkably complex, both in the way it advocates for a combination of Messianic Judaism and Charismatic Protestantism as the ultimate way to worship God, but also for the way it treads the line between well-studied respect for Jewish traditions and insane anti-Semitic depictions of the day-to-day lives of Jewish people. The film opens with a yarmulke-wearing father screaming at his son forbidding him from being a fan of the briefly sensational Christian football player Tim Tebow. Then, we meet a 12-year-old Christian jock who is obsessed with reading about the Holocaust and has the life goal of making a Jewish friend who he could convert to Christ. When the Jewish boy and Christian boy’s lives suddenly collide, both of their families are changed forever, and something... let’s just say, “unexpected” happens. An endless amount of quotable lines, laugh out loud scenes, and deep religious lore make THE UNEXPECTED BAR MITZVAH a riveting watch we’d recommend to all lovers of DIY film. The Final Battle (2007) TEASER

Subscribe today for access to our full catalog of bonus episodes, including 2+ new episodes every month! www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy “Come to Brazil, Boys’ Bible Study!” The Boys heard your cries, so we unwind in South American paradise with a Brazilian rapture movie that may possibly be associated with the Seventh-day Adventist church. Not a lot of information exists online about THE FINAL BATTLE other than an IMDb page crediting director Elso Alves, so we have to draw a lot of our own conclusions about its perspective. THE FINAL BATTLE hits some major touchstones we’ve come to expect from rapture pop theology, including fears of a one world government and currency. What sets this film apart from the others is its repeated insistence that Saturday is the true Sabbath, not Sunday, and that the Biblical rapture will begin in part due to a “dominical decree” across the world that will force people to work on Saturday and rest Sunday. The film’s preoccupation with the Sabbath and with the final annihilation of the rapture is consistent with Seventh-day Adventist theology, which emerged from Millerite teachings in the 19th century United States and has since spread around the world. Its global penetration is felt in THE FINAL BATTLE, one of the few Christian films we’ve watched that depicts characters shirtless or in bikinis lounging by the pool as they await persecution by the One World Government, which seems to us like a uniquely Brazilian perspective on the rapture. Elegant shots of palm trees are broken up with bizarre and intense imagery depicting the earth’s destruction and, in one particularly memorable scene, a sinful young man weeping as he is stuck on an annihilated earth watching his former friends sing and celebrate as angels in heaven. Many Christian directors have taken their turn depicting the rapture; THE FINAL BATTLE manages to keep the terror while injecting some delightful “fun in the sun”. SPECIAL - 4 Years of Boys’ Bible Study! Roundup, Best Clips, and Top Picks

1/14/2024
“In the fourth year all its fruit will be holy, an offering of praise to the Lord.” Leviticus 19:24. It’s four years of Boys’ Bible Study! We’re so grateful for your support through the years, so we’ve once again followed our tradition of marking the occasion with a special clip and roundup show where we review the best of what we covered in the previous year. We ask and answer important questions — why does my wife keep asking me for a brand new kitchen? Is it possible she and I are unequally yoked? And if so, does the Vatican have something to do with this? We also once again finish our year-end roundup with the 4th annual GOLDEN CALF AWARDS, where we recognize excellent Christian films in categories of our own creation. Whether you’ve listened to Boys’ Bible Study from the beginning, or are newly joining us this week, we hope this episode will be a comprehensive look into both the history and also the current trends of Christian cinema! We’ve covered the work of Canadian filmmakers Greg and Dallas Lammiman before in our episodes on their films MAYFLOWER II and REMEMBER, but this week we see the brothers’ more wholesome and comedic side, as opposed to the CGI-forward dystopian DIY sci-fi we associate as their signature style. MY GRANDPA DETECTIVE is a comedy about a young police officer whose nightmares come true when he’s partnered with his own grandpa, who due to a clerical error must return to the force for six more days at age 85 in order to collect his pension. Along the way, they solve the crimes of the “Hamburgler Burgler” who has a passion for stealing unimportant items from restaurants and convenience stores, and learn a lesson or two about the biblical concept of forgiveness from their Christian secretary named Sassy. When the two related detectives are reunited with a long lost family member on a dark path, their relationship is put to the test — but very confusing scriptwriting prevents MY GRANDPA DETECTIVE from fully realizing its family-friendly fable. Autopsy (1975) feat. Jim Branscome of Cinematic Void

12/31/2023
When a wave of unexplained murders and suicides hits your town, and you begin seeing demented visions of corpses coming to life to torment you, who else would you turn to but a priest? AUTOPSY is a lurid, intense, and captivating thriller about a beautiful young scientist who teams up with a race car driver turned Catholic priest to find the truth behind a series of killings that may not be as random as they first seem. Director Armando Crispino enlists prolific actors Mimsy Farmer, Barry Primus, and Ray Lovelock to act out a bizarre web of passion and intrigue in a tone that lovers of sleazy Italian films of the 1970s would immediately recognize as typical to the “giallo” genre. But what is this… “giallo”? You may ask, since most Boys’ Bible Study listeners prefer to keep their innocence intact by watching a strict diet of faith-based films. This week, the Bible Boys (“I Ragazzi della Bibbia”) get an education in the giallo genre from our friend Jim Branscome of Cinematic Void, who has just kicked off his annual “January Giallo” screening series in Los Angeles and several other participating theaters across the United States. Giallo is just one of the many film genres on which Jim is an expert, and he’s risen to prominence as a key player in the Los Angeles film scene through his diligent work curating film events and starting conversations on the medium through his popular Cinematic Void podcast. We’re so excited to finally have Jim on our show to discuss a giallo with vaguely Christian themes, even though we don’t understand why God allows Jim to pervert a new generation of film-goers with such filth. Jingle Smells (2023)

12/24/2023
The latest in anti-woke cinema is the Christmas comedy JINGLE SMELLS by director Daniel Lusko. This holiday tale of an Iraq war veteran turned garbageman turned “Robin Hood” stars a pantheon of Christian and conservative media personalities including John Schneider (recently in the news for nearly winning The Masked Singer and then vaguely threatening President Joe Biden on social media), the prolific legend Eric Roberts, SNL alumni Victoria Jackson and Jim Breuer, Trump-affiliated lawyer Jay Sekulow, Fox News powerhouse Sean Hannity, and newcomer Ben Davies. When handsome yet unmotivated veteran Nick Gutman (Ben Davies) gets a humble waste management job using his cop father’s (John Schneider) connections, he accidentally thwarts an evil toy company CEO’s (Eric Roberts) plan to cancel a once-great action movie actor by throwing away all of the action figures made in the actor’s likeness. Nick Gutman is dubbed “Jingle Smells” by his local media for redistributing the tossed toys to poor kids in the neighborhood — however, in our opinion, JINGLE SMELLS ultimately fails in its mission to create a new Christmas legend by tipping the sacred cows of liberalism. Its comedy is too niche and internet-poisoned to make a splash outside of its small yet well-connected conservative scene. It’s a “big trash, small dumpster” situation. A Bell Family Christmas (2022) TEASER

12/17/2023
Subscribe today for access to our full catalog of bonus episodes, including 2+ new episodes every month! www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy Merry Christmas from our new favorite family, the Bells! Earlier this year, we became enamored with the UNEQUALLY YOKED series of films, directed by Tijideen Rowley with writing collaboration from Jeannie Preston and Brittany Cherelle Preston. Both are shot in the Indianapolis area and center on a fictional black church community struggling with the everyday problems that could be relatable to any Christians. Several of these characters are the Bells, a loving and caring family with high achieving kids; eldest sister Harmony is a successful lawyer (or so she claims), Derrick is a Harvard student, Cedric used to be a nerd in previous films but he’s been recast as a bodybuilder for some reason, and Shelly is an academically precocious teen. This Christmas, however, all may not be what it seems. Harmony has returned from California to visit her folks, harboring the secret that she quit her job as a lawyer and is now stripping at a club to make ends meet. Throw in some other chaos agents, such as the drunk Auntie Jackie who is determined to spoil the Bells’ perfect Christmas, and we can start to see how even the most perfect-seeming family can break down and forget the reason for the season. A BELL FAMILY CHRISTMAS is genuinely one of the most “normal”, wholesome and competent of the Christian films we’ve ever watched for this podcast. It’s not super dogmatic or judgemental; it acknowledges even the Bells can be sinners, and how can we be better than the Bells, the greatest family of all time? Kirk Cameron's Saving Christmas (2014)

12/10/2023
Just when we thought Advent was ruined, “Captain Save a Christmas” himself, former child star and current Christian cinema kingpin Kirk Cameron is back with another banger. KIRK CAMERON’S SAVING CHRISTMAS is just one of a series of docudramas Kirk Cameron helmed in the 2010s. Our favorite is his masterpiece KIRK CAMERON’S CONNECT, a bizarre piece that combines interviews and dramatizations to explore how dangerous the Internet can be to a Christian family. KIRK CAMERON’S SAVING CHRISTMAS, which was directed and co-written by accomplished music video director Darren Doane, follows a similar formula in its attempt to keep the Christmas spirit alive. We’ve seen a lot of Christian media arguing that the spirit of Christmas needs aggro maintanence, but this film contains a bizarre point of view that sets it apart from the others. Basically, KIRK CAMERON’S SAVING CHRISTMAS tries to prove that all of the popular American secular Christmas traditions, from Santa to gift shopping, contain profound religious symbolism and should be observed seriously. Other Christian movies ask, “Whose birthdays is it anyway? Santa’s or Jesus’s?” whereas KIRK CAMERON’S SAVING CHRISTMAS reminds us that Santa is a perfect analogue to Jesus and should be supported wholeheartedly. Also, presents represent the New Jerusalem and the Christmas tree represents the Garden of Eden. We thank Kirk Cameron for reminding us that Santa Claus is truly the reason for the season. Doreen Virtue Debunks "The Secret" TEASER

12/3/2023
Subscribe today for access to our full catalog of bonus episodes, including 2+ new episodes every month! www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy Doreen Virtue is a fascinating Christian influencer considering she initially rose to cultural prominence as a popular New Age author, publishing over 50 books from the 1990s-2010s. Her work had a spiritual focus on angels, however from a non-denominational New Age perspective; “angel numbers”, direct contact with “personal angels”, and drawing upon angelic energies to heal are recurring concepts in Virtue’s oeuvre. Her life trajectory changed in 2017, when something amazing happened: Virtue saw God’s light and was baptized into the Episcopal Church, effectively leaving behind the entire body of work that made her famous enough for national TV appearances on shows like Oprah. But was this revelation a career killer? Not at all! The enterprising businesswoman that she is, Doreen Virtue managed to turn this abrupt spiritual pivot into a successful youtube channel, continued forays into publishing (this time on Christian concepts), and even an extremely entertaining meme page. We at Boys’ Bible Study have been wanting to cover Virtue’s work for a while; we finally decided it would be most interesting to hear her takes on the New Age economy that got her paid in the first place. In a Sept. 2023 youtube upload, Virtue and Christian author/influencer Jon Clash filmed their conversation about the lies behind the doctrine of “The Secret” or “The Law of Attraction”, the popular New Age concept that our thoughts become actions and can change the universe. Being fascinated ourselves with the bizarre personalities profiled in THE SECRET (2006) documentary, we thought it would be fascinating to hear the once-reigning queen of New Age spill the tea on all her former scene cohorts. In this bonus episode, we use Doreen Virtue’s spiritual expertise to give us new ammo to take down the dreaded “Secret”, and we ponder whether Virtue’s pivot to Christianity was a sincere plot twist or an extremely well thought-out, cynical cash grab. Either way, we (the Christian content consumers) are the real winners. Bakersfield, California based auteur Barry Zoeller clearly called upon his skills as a TV news anchor and producer to create this competent and well-paced retelling of Bible times events in the modern day. At the moment THE PROSECUTOR appears to be Mr. Zoeller’s only feature still available online, digitally distributed by Great American Pure Flix (formerly Pure Flix). We are very intrigued by his 1990 short film TEMPTATION CONTROL CENTER, about an NSA-style surveillance team within a teenager’s head who monitors temptation, but at the moment we cannot find this film available to view online. THE PROSECUTOR however had a VHS release in the 80s and stars a very competent cast who enact a court case that supposes Jesus was crucified and resurrected in modern day and the state was attempting to quash His growing reputation by declaring Christian thought to be functionally illegal. A series of witnesses including scientists, military personnel, and Jesus’s disciples are brought on the stand to be grilled by the conniving attorney general and then questioned by the story’s hero, Michael Lindsey, a young Christian attorney who risks ruining his reputation to defend Jesus’s impossible story in the trial of the century. An onscreen title at the end of the film asks us, the audience, to be the jury in this trial; we at Boys’ Bible Study can only conclude beyond a reasonable doubt that Jesus is alive! An Old Fashioned Thanksgiving (2008) TEASER

Subscribe today for access to our full catalog of bonus episodes, including 2+ new episodes every month! www.patreon.com/boysbiblestudy Let us travel back in time to a golden age of Thanksgiving, when women wore bonnets, stuffing was king, and there wasn’t a single iPhone in sight. This is the era of AN OLD FASHIONED THANKSGIVING, based on a short story of the same name by Louisa May Alcott, the author of LITTLE WOMEN. We meet the women of the Bassett family — Tilly (Tatiana Maslany, of ORPHAN BLACK and SHE-HULK: ATTORNEY AT LAW) is a teenage aspiring writer who lives in a tiny farmhouse shack with her mother Mary (Hélène Joy) and siblings. The poverty-stricken family is in danger of having to skip Thanksgiving this year, unless Tilly can get in contact with her randomly extremely rich grandmother Isabella, who Mary has kept secret from Tilly due to a mother/daughter dispute that permanently affected their relationship. It’s good story fodder for a Hallmark movie, which we expect to be 90 minutes long, to feature ladies in beautiful period dresses, and to resolve in a happy ending. AN OLD FASHIONED THANKSGIVING was actually an extremely popular TV movie when it premiered, reaching 5.2 million viewers. Spoiler alert: not only does Tilly mend the family relationship and uplift the entire Bassett clan back into aristocracy where they belong, she also marries a handsome young rich boy. AN OLD FASHIONED THANKSGIVING teaches us that you can overcome any of life’s problems, and have all the turkey and mashed potatoes you want, provided you randomly have an extravagant social safety net that makes your poverty larp all worth it in the end. The Defense of New Haven (2016)

11/12/2023
This Christian film with a steampunk aesthetic is notable for its cast made up entirely of kids. Joel and Lisa Steege and their seven children create films as Little Crew Studios. Their most recent work is 2016’s THE DEFENSE OF NEW HAVEN, an adventure story set in a fictional society where masked Raiders are sowing chaos and disappearing innocent civilians. When protagonist Alec is caught in the crossfire and his younger sister goes missing, he insists on joining the CDF (City Defense Force), even though his disability makes him an unlikely fighter. Intrigue and adventure follow Alec and his new colleagues, including journeys through hidden underground tunnels and nautical battles on mini steamboats. Something genuinely impressive about the Steeges’ productions is that they construct their entire sets on their property. Parents and kids work together to create elaborate cityscapes and real bodies of water big enough to film boat scenes. Joel and Lisa Steege are so dedicated to their productions that Joel quit his job to pursue the family film business full time. The Steege children rise to the level of the production with their acting ability; they must be extremely smart and well spoken to be able to deliver such complicated lines. However, listening to kids dispense nonstop steampunk lore in a monotonous childlike timbre gets really tedious after about 15 minutes. Still, a society that truly recognizes talent and drive in the arts would automatically vote to allocate $100 million to allow the Steeges to create their magnum opus in the chibi Christian genre.
