Janis's Story

At the age of forty, with four young children Janis had a sudden twist in life with the start of her husband's manic behavior ultimately leading to Bi-Polar diagnosis. Janis describes the challenges of trying to keep some form of family stability with little knowledge or support of his mental illness. Aileen's Story

Aileen and her family were introduced to serious mental illness when their son Geoff was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder as a freshman in college. Now, 21 years later, Aileen says "she doesn't believe they could have navigated successfully without NAMI DuPage and all it offers its clients and their families." What we who know her admire so much are her tireless efforts to help others who face that same journey. She began volunteering for NAMI DuPage over 20 years ago, and has risen through their ranks to become a "trainer of trainers" on a national level, mentoring many dozens of like minded volunteers who are now peer group facilitators and educational instructors. Briana Carr is a proud UNCW School of Social Work grad! Over her career she has provided clinical services for Coastal Horizons Center, the Boys and Girls Home of North Carolina, and most recently launched a full-time solo practice. She also teaches for her alma mater. Mary Borland has been a volunteer for a NAMI DuPage, an affiliated NAMI office outside of Chicago. Ill. for over 30 years. Mary's son Chris was diagnosed with Schizophrenia in his early 20's. Mary discusses her family's experience supporting Chris, and each other through those very trying early days of his treatment though his ongoing recovery.
