Spiritual and Sexual Abuse in a Cult-like Church with Survivor Justin Woodbury

3/28/2023
In a moving yet disturbing memoir about finding healing after suffering unthinkable trauma, today's special guest Justin Woodbury recounts his time growing up in an Independent Fundamentalist Baptist Church and how its cultlike organization allowed for child abuse. Justin was taught from a young age that if he followed a strict set of morals he would be protected from all the evil in the world. But one spring day in 1998 when he was followed into a barn by a sexual predator and faithful church attender Carol Lynn Mathia, he learned this wasn’t true. He didn’t know this family friend had been grooming him for years, and he certainly didn’t know that forty minutes after walking into the barn, he would leave feeling confused, dirty, and guilty. After the incident, Justin became trapped in a twisted sexual relationship that lasted months and ended with a conspiracy to commit murder. When the church found out, the abuse was covered up and life went on as normal—except it didn’t, not for Justin. For the next 20 years, he experienced PTSD and nightmares, and carried heavy baggage that almost ended his marriage. His book Sheltered but Not Protected is the true story of growing up in the IFB church; the sexual, mental, and emotional abuse he experienced; how he escaped; and his journey to find healing and forgiveness. Justin Woodbury, a child survivor of church abuse decided to start his life over at age thirty in Littleton, Colorado. There, he met his best friend, soulmate, and love of his life, Emily. Justin began advocating for victims of abuse after he held his son in his arms for the first time and realized the weight of responsibility he would have as a father. Since then, Justin has made it his life's mission to speak out against abuse in all forms and to be a voice for victims, especially those who were abused in a religious setting.

Narcissistic Parents Who Weaponize Their Children with Activist David Shubert

3/24/2023
Every day all around the world a child and parent are alienated from one another. When this happens, lives are devastated, bonds between a normally loving parent and child are made to be apart, and hearts are broken. Parental alienation is something that has always been in our lives, but until it touches us, we always believe it only happens to other people. Sadly, it is our children who will suffer the most because, they will lose half of who they are, half of who they can become, and half of the heritage they should be able to know. International parental abduction is a growing area of concern as relationships are constantly being born between people from different countries and cultures. In the US alone, it is estimated that over 800 children will be abducted by one of their parents and spirited away to a foreign country. This only accounts for the ones who are reported missing. There are some people who feel that the child can't be abducted because they are with one of the parents. This is untrue. Positive changes must be made in individual state's legislation as well as in the family court systems. There must be a legal reckoning for these parents who use their children as pawns in this war. Parental alienation is a form of emotional abuse on both, the targeted parent and victim children alike. David R Shubert is a left behind and alienated parent who has been fighting to be in his daughter and stepson's lives for over fifteen years now. He understands the dynamics involved in the mental and emotional aspects that all alienated parents are forced to endure. After becoming disillusioned with the family courts, he decided to take matters into own hands to promote awareness on the various social media outlets. He felt that he needed to write about what millions of other parents go through when their child has been parentally abducted or alienated from the other parent.

How to Identify Predatory Mental Health Practitioners: NPD Expert Randi Fine

3/11/2023
Narcissists thrive on the power and control they have over other people’s minds. Many narcissists choose careers in mental health care for this reason. Narcissists who practice mental health care usually operate covertly. The abuse is often subtle but the effect they have on those who, for whatever reason, are experiencing a vulnerable time in their life, can be devastating. Many have the misconception that a mental health degree and letters after someone’s name automatically makes the person competent and trustworthy. This belief could not be farther from the truth. People are people. We cannot blindly trust anyone just because the person is licensed and trained; just because they have a Master’s degree or PhD. What could be better for a narcissist than to have licensed power over others’ thinking? It is a dream job for them. Narcissistic Abuse Expert Randi Fine will be discussing this topic and others today in her “Second Friday-of-every-month” NPD focused podcast. Randi Fine is a World Renowned Narcissistic Abuse Expert and Coach in private practice with 15 years of experience coaching victims and survivors of narcissistic personality disorder abuse worldwide. Through a remarkable journey that she has shared in her memoir, Under the Orange Blossoms, Cindy has found healing and hope. Pandemic Stress Prematurely Aged Teenage Brains with Dr Kathryn Smerling

One of the study’s findings showed that when comparing the MRI scans of a group of 128 children, half before the pandemic and half at the end of the first year, there was growth in the hippocampus and amygdala, parts of the brain that control memory access and help regulate fear, stress and other emotions. To quote today's special guest, NYC psychotherapist Dr. Kathryn Smerling, “What we’re seeing is that when we are isolated and fear-based, we don’t grow as well when we are not fear-based.” A collaborative and dynamic psychotherapist, Dr. Kathryn Smerling specializes in creating healthy and meaningful relationships. She works with individuals and families in all phases of life, crises-related or otherwise. Her extensive professional and educational experience has developed her working knowledge of a broad range of techniques, allowing her to creatively tailor sessions to meet the specific needs of her clients.
