You Are More Precious Than Diamonds

2/19/2018
More
In God’s eyes, are you more precious than diamonds? Could it be true? Think for a moment about diamonds. They are one of the most precious items in creation, rare, beautiful and highly prized. But they are nothing compared to how God values us–yes, we who trip and fall and fail more often than we care to admit.

Me and Miss California

2/12/2018

One day my husband called me and said that Lisa needed a place to live for a few months. “What do you think of inviting her to live with us?” Not one to wait long before making a decision, my husband stayed on the phone for my answer.

Online with God

I’ve been giving some thought to the fact that my brain never seems to turn off. I’m always thinking. If I try not to think, I’m only thinking that I’m not thinking! I wonder if God made our brains so that they never turn off so that we could truly “pray without ceasing,” as 1 Thessalonians 5:17 instructs us. Or at least center our thoughts on God throughout the day–not just at the beginning and end of each day. If that is true, I realize a lot of my brain energy goes to non-essentials. God...

Life At Its Best

1/29/2018
More
In his book Senior Moments, Willard Spiegelman expressed a very pessimistic view on life: “We come into the world alone, with a cry,” he reminds us. Then he adds, “We exit alone, to confront the final eternal silence. The fun, all the pleasure and adventure, lies in between.”

Is Prayer Enough?

1/15/2018
More
Allie Pohlmeier Smith served for a period of time as a missionary in Kenya. After she returned to the U.S., violence broke out in that country that she had grown to love. As the atrocities mounted, her heart ached to help. Yet, all she could do was to pray. And pray she did. But she became haunted by that thought “All we can do is pray.”

Introvert or Extrovert?

1/8/2018
More
I would have knots in the pit of my stomach when I was headed to an event where I’d be making conversation with people I had never met before. What if I couldn’t think of anything to talk about?? I had sweaty palms when I was about to address a group and saw professionals sitting in the audience. I had a terrible fear my mind would go blank.

Need Peace?

1/1/2018
More
Have you noticed that when you see something in your home day after day, soon you fail to notice it? My husband experienced that when a brass plaque appeared on his desk next to his computer monitor. The message? A verse from Paul’s letter to the Colossians that reads: “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts!” (3:15).

God’s Grace Giftwrapped

The man had a physical challenge—he was crippled and couldn’t walk. The only way he knew to get support was to beg at the temple gate in Jerusalem. One morning the lame man awakened to what seemed like any other day. But on this day his life was to be forever changed. When the apostles Peter and John came to the temple that morning, he asked them for money. What they gave him could never be bought. “I have no silver and gold,” Peter told him, “but what I do have I give to you. In the name...

I’ve Got Work to Do

My husband, Harold, likes to ask kids, “What age do you have to be before you’re ‘old?’” He gets answers all the way from “50” to “a hundred.” I suppose we’re really not old until we reach the age when God has no more for us to do here. Harold sometimes says, “God put me on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things, and right now I’m so far behind, I’m sure I will never die!”

I Shoulda…

Her name is the “Shoulda’-Finger-Pointer,” and she comes around to spoil your peace of mind, especially after any kind of social event. Let me explain. The “shoulda’-Finger-Pointer” is the little voice inside that robs us of peace and joy when she makes us shake our fingers at ourselves and say, “You SHOULD have done more.” Or, “You SHOULD have done it differently.” Or even something as frivolous as “You SHOULD have known better than to wear that dress tonight.”

How Do I Know My Value?

11/27/2017
More
Let’s say you own a beautiful piece of art–a painting, a gorgeous crystal vase, or perhaps an antique sculpture. How much is it worth? You’re probably not sure. There’s a way to find out, though. Experts tell us that when it comes to placing value on a beautiful piece of art, that value depends on three things:

Home!

11/20/2017

Did you ever think of God as wanting to live in your home in every day? Yet, that’s what He offers us. Here’s what Jesus said in John, chapter 14: “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him” (verse 23). What an amazing thought that the creator of the universe, who owns everything, wants to be at home with me!

Have Trouble Saying No?

11/13/2017
More
Do you have trouble saying “No” when you’re asking to do something? If so, you probably find yourself too busy for your own good–or anyone else’s. Mary Byers gives us an idea that will help. The technique is called, “Five Times Why,” and it’s attributed to Taiichi Ohno, father of the Toyota Production System. Here’s how it works. When someone asks you to do something and you’re feeling overwhelmed, first ask yourself–

God Made Them Male and Female

A wife prayed, Dear Lord, I pray for wisdom to understand my husband, Love to forgive him, And patience for his moods. Because, Lord, if I pray for strength, I’ll beat him to death. We laugh, but I’m afraid that’s how many a wife would like to deal with her marriage problems. Let me share a few thoughts about men that I think are important.

God in My Busy-ness

The apostle Peter urged us to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18). Knowing that’s what God wants, my friend brought up very practical issue: “If I have 1,001 things to do every day, how can I grow in my relationship with the Lord when sometimes a quick prayer is all I have time for?”

Giving Your Body to God

10/23/2017
More
Though my dad was in ministry for more than 70 years, my mom rarely spoke to groups in public. That’s why after she passed away, I was so happy to find some speaking notes of hers. She brought a message based on Romans 12:1, where the apostle Paul writes, “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice”–reasonable in light of all that God has done for us.

Feeling Worthless

Asaph was discouraged–so discouraged, in fact, that he had about given up on God. In Psalm 77, Asaph asks five questions that convey the despair he was feeling: “Will the Lord spurn forever, and never again be favorable? Has his steadfast love forever ceased? Are his promises at an end for all time? Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he in anger shut up his compassion?” (Psalm 77:7-9). Asaph tells us he cried aloud and couldn’t sleep. He was in a bad way!
