Charlie Lee was born on the Ivory Coast and moved to the United States when he was 13. He studied and obtained computer science degrees from MIT in 2000 and was a developer for ChromeOS at Google. As an early adopter of Bitcoin, Charlie Lee created Litecoin to "create [an] ... alternative currency similar to Bitcoin ... a coin that is silver to Bitcoin's gold." Charlie left his career at Google to join the crypto startup Coinbase as Director of Engineering - a position he held until 2017.
