The Interview Show with Dune Rats (podcast edition) 2017-#20

10/16/2017
More
When I found Australian garage punk band Dune Rats (Danny, BC and Brett) behind Vancouver's Rickshaw Theatre, they were already many, many, many beers into their evening. Somehow I coaxed these charming party animals from their beers towards a quiet place in the alley to chat. The Rickshaw is located in the heart of Vancouver's downtown lower east side and that evening the alley was completely littered with used needles. When we started the interview a woman was standing halfway up the alley...

The Interview Show with How To Dress Well (radio edit) 2017-#19

10/9/2017
More
I met Tom Krell, the main man behind How to Dress Well, at soundcheck. He was negotiating with his band just how they were going to tweak his song "& It Was U" for the show that night. After the band had figured out the song, Tom and me hung out for a bit. He had a bit of a tour cold and you can hear him sniffling as we chat. Which HTDW song is a "consent pop song" and "sex positivity anthem"? Do I get Tom to talk about his dissertation length research project on the history of philosophy?...

The Interview Show with The Garden (radio edit) 2017-#18

Twins Wyatt and Fletcher Shears formed the Southern California punk duo called The Garden in 2011 (when they were 17). They have even invented a name for what they do, "vada vada." The Shears brothers always seem to be making music. Even when they take a break from The Garden, each twin has his own side project, Wyatt's is called Enjoy and Fletcher's is named Puzzle. I hung out with the brothers one cold night outside the Cobalt while The Prettys did a soundcheck inside. What is "vada...

The Interview Show with Creative Adult (radio edit) 2017-#17

9/7/2017
More
When I arrived outside Vancouver's DIY 333 venue shortly before the show, most of the members of San Francisco post-punk band Creative Adult were snoring in the tour van. The band had gone pretty hard the night before in Seattle, so I managed to convince the band's guitarist, Michael Bingham, to talk with me while he enjoyed a cigarette and beers. The band's 2016 record, Fear of Life, nearly destroyed Creative Adult (and the band's friendships) and I couldn't wait to hear the entire story!...

Cary Pratt is Prairie Cat. He's also a mainstay of the Vancouver music scene. He's just released his latest Prairie Cat record, called ...Is Cary Pratt. The Interview Show with Prozzäk (radio edit) 2017-#15

7/21/2017
More
Prozzäk is a late 90s pop band that tells the tales of two animated characters, Simon and Milo, who are also best friends. Most of the music revolves around Simon's attempts to find true love. This band is the first record that most of my friends--who are now in their late 20s and early 30s--bought as a kid. The idea of Prozzäk was born while creators Jay Levine (Simon) and James Bryan McCollum (Milo) were touring in their other band--jazzy poppy soul act The Philosopher Kings--and feeling...

7/5/2017
More
The Fat Possum Record label indie rock whiz kids called The Districts announced that their next record, Popular Manipulations, will come out August 11th, 2017. For some reason, music journalists like to focus on two things when talking about the band: 1 they are "young" (the band was formed in 2009 by four high schoolers) and 2 they come from a "small town" (Lititz, Pennsylvania, the self-titled "Coolest Small Town in America"). The band of course would rather be known for their music. I...

The Interview Show with Making A Murderer (radio edit) 2017-#13

6/25/2017
More
Making a Murderer is the Netflix original documentary television series written and directed by Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos. The show follows the story of Steven Avery, who spent 18 years in prison for rape and was freed after DNA linked another man to the crime. After being fully exonerated in 2003, Avery filed a suit against the county on this case. In 2005, Avery was arrested on charges of murdering Teresa Halbach, a local photographer, and was convicted in 2007. The series was...

The Interview Show with John Ridley (12 Years A Slave) (podcast edition) 2017-#12

This summer I took The Interview Show on the road to the Banff World Media Festival at the staggeringly beautiful Banff Fairmont Springs Luxury Hotel and Resort. I got to hang out a bit with screenwriter and showrunner John Ridley. In fact we sat down for some tea right after he walked off the stage. John Ridley has had a very interesting and varied career. Most people know him as the 2014 Oscar winner for best adapted screenplay for 12 Years a Slave or as the show runner of the recently...

The Interview Show with Whitney (radio edit) 2017-#11

6/6/2017

When I met Chicago indie band Whitney (Max Kakacek and Julien Ehrlich) at Vancouver's Biltmore, they were in the middle of practicing a cool, weird, new handshake. Max and Julien met in their previous glam-rock band the Smith Westerns and quickly became close friends. When the Smith Westerns imploded, they started to work together on what would eventually become Whitney. The result ended up being the amazing debut record, Light Upon the Lake. How did Max and Julien get over the Smith...

I hung out with Warp Records electronic, experimental, ambient, drone producer Daniel Lopatin aka Oneohtrix Point Never (or sometimes OPN) in an unusually busy alleyway behind Vancouver’s Venue nightclub. He sipped tea the whole time to massage his vocal chords for that night’s show. His latest record, Garden of Delete, started when Daniel got really obsessed with top 40 music and wondered what it would be like to create an entire album from the discarded song ideas of top 40 pop...

5/25/2017
More
May 2017 was supposed to be the start of the next stage in the career of queercore band PWR BTTM. They were set to release their next record Pageant--the follow up to the well-received 2015 full length debut Ugly Cherries. But then Jezebel.com posted accusations of sexual assault against PWR BTTM member Ben Hopkins by an anonymous accuser. Before the end of May 2017, the band found themselves dropped by their label and management team and a touring member of the band quit. The band have...
