The Molle Mystery Theatre came to the NBC airwaves on September 7, 1943, bringing to radio the "best in mystery and detective fiction" The series was introduced by criminologist Geoffrey Barnes, in reality veteran radio actor Bernard Lenrow. An avid "connoisseur of mysteries" since the 1920s, the actor routinely read 100 mystery novels each year and personally selected the stories to be dramatized on Mystery Theatre. Lenrow was also heard on radio as the superheroic adventurer Doc Savage ("the Man of Bronze") and later as Commissioner Weston on The Shadow.
