#2,034 - Denver's homeless encampment crackdowns to include mandated addiction treatment

12/5/2023
Denver Mayor Mike Johnston was clear Saturday when someone asked during a House1000 town hall meeting what will happen to those who say no to free housing. He said taking 1,000 people off the streets with accepting an offer of free housing “allows us to focus much more rigorously on the enforcement of those who don’t (want the housing).” He said those in the grips of addiction will be offered “outpatient treatment and if not, we will get you inpatient treatment.” Johnston made his remarks during a town hall meeting at Evans School in Golden Triangle. The forum answered questions from neighbors of proposed micro community sites at 1199 N. Bannock and 1375 N. Elati. Homeless advocates have forecast an expected enforcement sweep following the de-commissioning of encampments. Those fears appear well-founded. #2,032 - Nurses describe Seattle Children’s Hospital as a ‘combat zone’ after dozens of alleged attacks

12/4/2023
Forty-four nurses at the state's largest pediatric hospital describe working "in a persistent state of fear" in the psychiatric and behavioral medicine unit. The Washington State Nurses Association issued a release on behalf of employees at Seattle Children's hospital, who sent a letter to the facility on Nov. 17 urgently requesting more help in their unit. WSNA said twice in the last two weeks, police have been called to mitigate violent incidents in the unit. On Nov. 7, WSNA said police responded after "patients turned over carts, used a pole to swing at people, broke windows, and held a nurse in a chokehold." WSNA said the same day, a nurse in a different part of the unit was "choked, struck in the head 16 times, and nearly lost consciousness." “Having 12 officers come in and escort a patient out is a sign we are under-resourced and also traumatizing,” Natasha Vederoff, a nurse on the unit, said in the release. #2,033 - Emergency closure' leads to huge cleanup of crime-ridden homeless encampment in Seattle

12/4/2023
Following the enforcement of an "emergency closure" order, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) cleaned up a crime-ridden homeless camp on Dearborn between 10th and 12th Avenues. In a day, WSDOT told KOMO News that nine truckloads of debris and trash were hauled away from the camp. Since January, 14 major fires occurred within the encampment, including four since the start of November. Additionally, KOMO News has covered numerous instances of crime, drug use, and SWAT standoffs at the camp. Earlier this year, Seattle police also found an altered shotgun in a camp known to distribute fentanyl. #2,031 - Where EXACTLY did San Fran's homeless population go during APEC conference?

12/3/2023
If you've visited San Francisco in the last week, chances are you have noticed fewer unhoused people near Moscone Center and downtown. Since APEC started, streets have been cleaner and the homeless population is not as visible in downtown San Francisco. The San Francisco Standard captured encampment on Van Ness Avenue and Eddy Street two months ago. This week, a completely different look. Planter boxes now on the sidewalk. A mile from APEC. Minna Street between Seventh and Julia Streets with multiple tents, two months ago. This week cleared. Less than a mile from APEC. #2,030 - Seattle Defunds Police then breaks 44 year record for Homicides in 2023

12/3/2023
Seattle has officially broken its previous homicide record in recent history. There have been 70 homicides so far in 2023. The previous record, based on Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs records dating back to 1979, was set in 1994, with 69 homicides. The 70th homicide victim died this month from injuries related to a stabbing in late June. Officers from the Seattle Police Department's West Precinct responded to reports of an assault at around 11:30 a.m. on June 26 where they found a victim with significant injuries. Officers located the suspect a block away from the crime scene, who then tried to assault an officer as they were getting taken into custody. The suspect was charged with second-degree assault in June. The charges had not been amended as of Wednesday. #2,029 - San Francisco Homeless Planter War Reaches Flash Point in Troubled Alley

12/1/2023
San Francisco officials have determined that garden planters installed by residents to deter homeless encampments in a troubled alleyway violate city code. After years of persistent homeless encampments along Larch Street, neighbors paid thousands of dollars in early July to install steel tanks filled with dirt and succulents, effectively forcing people who were living on the sidewalk in tents to move elsewhere. Neighbors said the planters were mostly successful in deterring homeless encampments, but newly unearthed public records reveal that Department of Public Works officials believe the planters are illegally blocking the sidewalk. “The planters don’t allow for a 72” [path of travel], which is in the Directors’ Order,” said Public Work’s staffer Nicolas Huff in an email dated Aug. 22. “Mike noted last month that the planters aren’t even allowing for a 48” [path of travel].” Support the show🛍️ Merch - https://Store.ReasonableTV.com/ 🌟 Go PREMIUM with Reasonable+ for uncensored access to our entire content library: https://ReasonableTV.com/ 💬 JOIN our FREE Discord Community! #2,027 - Walmart's anti-theft technology accuses honest consumers of shoplifting

11/30/2023
Nobody likes being accused of theft. That includes people who are actually thieves, but their feelings aren't all that important since they’re actually stealing, The problem — and it's a big one — is that many of the ways retailers fight theft make honest customers feel like criminals. That starts with small things like Walmart (WMT) - Get Free Report and Costco Wholesale (COST) - Get Free Report employees checking your receipts when you leave their stores. Yes, they do it to everyone, but it's still not a pleasant feeling for honest folks worried that they may have missed or improperly scanned an item at self-checkout. It gets uglier, however, when companies use sneaker techniques to cut down theft, specifically at self-checkout. In Walmart's case, the retailer has technology that allows a store associate to shut off a self-checkout. The worker is not supposed to tell the customer that they're suspected of theft. Instead, the worker is to pretend that it's a technical problem. That's a strategy that inconveniences honest people and creates a grey area. Did the person steal a can of soup or did it just not scan? #2,026 - Squatting invaders of Seattle home leave behind stripper pole used for Only Fans

11/30/2023
The Seattle Police Department removed two squatters from Leka Devatha’s Queen Anne Triplex. “Yes, it’s been a stressful situation,” landlord Leka Devatha said. “And I just feel emotionally relieved. Not just that we got the squatters out, but we are making the neighborhood safe again.” Devatha is from Redmond but rents out property in Seattle. In October, her property manager, Eric Poll, called her to let her know that a couple had moved into the top floor of her vacant Queen Anne Triplex. When Eric knocked on their door, he said the couple told him they had a lease from the owner. “They just said they have a lease from the owner and they’re not going to show it to me, and I need to do whatever,” said Poll. First, Leka decided to confront the couple herself, who were defiant. They told her they would be calling their attorney. Leka and Eric called the Seattle Police Department but it told her she had a civil matter on her hands. They showed officers a lease on their phone, which they say they got from Craigslist. They also had filed a change of address and were officially receiving mail. They even put out Halloween decorations. #2,025 - New York City to reduce police numbers, slash budgets due to billions spent on migrant crisis

11/29/2023
New York City on Thursday announced it is reducing police numbers and cutting budgets in areas like education as it continues to struggle with the exorbitant costs related to the "sanctuary" city's migrant crisis. Mayor Eric Adams announced a $110.5 billion budget, saying cuts across all agencies were necessary with the city having spent $1.45 billion in fiscal 2023 on the migrant crisis and nearly $11 billion expected to be spent in 2024 and 2025. "For months, we have warned New Yorkers about the challenging fiscal situation our city faces," Adams said in a statement. "To balance the budget as the law requires, every city agency dug into their own budget to find savings, with minimal disruption to services. "And while we pulled it off this time, make no mistake: Migrant costs are going up, tax revenue growth is slowing and COVID stimulus funding is drying up." #2,024 - Is reinstating involuntary commitment for addiction and mental issues on the table for Seattle?

11/29/2023
A controversial policy known as “involuntary commitment” for people struggling with severe untreated mental health or addiction issues could be on the table next year in Seattle. City Councilmember Sara Nelson told KUOW involuntary commitment is just one policy idea that could be discussed as a centrist majority gets set to take over the City Council next year, after most races in the November election went their way. Nelson added that any city policy would need to take into account current state law on involuntary commitment, also known as “involuntary treatment,” which is very tightly regulated. Currently people can only be detained in rare cases, such as where there is a risk of serious harm due to a mental health or substance disorder. #2,023 - Gavin Newsom's Homeless Cleanup of San Fran Sparks New Conspiracy Theory

11/28/2023
California Governor Gavin Newsom's recent homelessness cleanup in San Francisco has sparked a new conspiracy theory suggesting that the city's homeless population went missing entirely. A video claiming that people in San Francisco were mysteriously disappearing ahead of last week's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit was posted to X, formerly Twitter, on Sunday. In the clip, the user shares another video of a man questioning why there's no footage of the city clean up before describing how people in the comments of the other video claimed their families also went missing that same night. "Evidently, people were driving around, and they were getting asked to get into white vans and these people are never seen from again," the user claims without offering any evidence of the allegations. "We've all been distracted by all this other stuff going on all over the world, and right in our own backyard here, this is going on." As of Tuesday, the clip has received over a million views. The video, which was originally posted on TikTok, has another 630,400 views. #2,022 - California voters ‘duped’ by reform plan that sparked shoplifting crisis: Sacramento Sheriff

11/28/2023
Rampant shoplifting in California’s capital has surpassed "crisis level," according to the outspoken sheriff of Sacramento County. "It is way beyond crisis level," Sacramento County Sheriff Jim Cooper told Fox News Digital in a Zoom interview Thursday about shoplifting. Cooper took the internet by storm earlier this month when he said in an X post that Target leaders prevented deputies from thwarting shoplifting incidents despite the store requesting help to stymie rampant retail crime. Cooper said his office recently worked with the massive retailer to carry out a shoplifting operation, but the plan apparently crumbled when Target leaders made a list of rules for where and how deputies and detectives could arrest the suspects. #2,021 - World class fiddler from Scotland has all equipment stolen from car thieves in Portland, OR

11/27/2023
Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas arrived in Portland November 13, a day before their scheduled concert at Alberta Rose Theatre. It was the last stop on their tour and they stopped for breakfast, then planned to see the sites of the city. But the day turned out much differently than the world-renowned Scottish fiddle player planned. They came out to find someone had broken into their car, parked at SW 10th and Taylor, and stole all their musical equipment and suitcases at some point between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. “Every single thing in the car was taken: Two suitcases, a cello and a massive flight case and my violin and a big bag of equipment,” Fraser told KOIN 6 News. “So at this point we are missing the violin, my treasured violin, all my microphone equipment and Natalie’s suitcase,” Fraser said. “Most of my luggage and Natalie’s suitcase is gone.” Fraser, 68, played that violin since he was 8. He knows nothing else. #2,020 - Massive I-10 in LA fire puts nationwide spotlight on huge unsanctioned homeless population living under freeways

11/26/2023
The fire erupted after midnight under a Los Angeles freeway where 16 people were living, including a pregnant woman who was only weeks from giving birth. As the flames engulfed the storage yard and the inferno's heat melted some of the thoroughfare's steel guardrails and concrete pillars, rescue crews were able to get everyone out safely. But the disaster has brought renewed criticism of officials' inability to get homeless residents off the street, leaving tens of thousands living in perilous locations across the nation's second-largest city. Three years ago, as part of a court order related to a yearslong lawsuit accusing the city and county of Los Angeles of not doing enough to address homelessness, a judge wrote that he was concerned about 7,000 people living under freeways, calling it “unreasonably dangerous.” County supervisor Hilda Solis said officials have since set aside nearly $300 million to create 6,700 shelter beds, but rows of tents and makeshift shelters are still a common sight under overpasses and along highway ramps. #2,019 - More Portland posturing?: Police officials say they are cracking down on crime (during holidays)

11/25/2023
With the holidays fast approaching, Multnomah County law enforcement officials are making a particular effort to assure Portland-area residents and visitors alike that the area will be safe for people looking to shop or attend events. On Monday, the Portland Police Bureau announced that it would begin walking patrols instead of car patrols in downtown through the end of the year, assigning eight officers to the area meant to operate in teams of two. They'll be out from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day, the agency said. PPB made no secret that the patrols are meant to assure people that the area will be safe for shoppers amid a marked erosion in the area's reputation and a rise in crime coming out of the pandemic. During a press conference on Tuesday, Chief Bob Day said that PPB will also launch a new mission to combat retail theft during the holiday shopping rush, set to start Black Friday and last through the weekend. #2,018 - Migrants get free turkey meals ahead of low income NYC residents causing big rift

11/24/2023
According to local reports and interviews, New Yorkers living in public housing are competing against tens of thousands of newly arrived migrants to New York City when it comes to meals this Thanksgiving. “Why do we have to take the butt of everything,” New Yorker Georgia Butler told FOX5 New York in an interview. “This community is already suffering.” “[The migrants] were first in line for the turkeys this morning,” Butler continued. “They tell you to be there at 11 o’clock. You get there at like 10:30, 10:45, but they are already out there. The line is from over there to over here.” According to FOX5 New York, New Yorkers living in public housing have seen some 8,000 migrants move into their neighborhoods after having arrived at the United States-Mexico border and being released into the nation’s interior. Already, low-income New Yorkers are dealing with strained resources. This week, city officials said they would offer $15 gift cards to those in public housing who have been forced to go without gas to cook meals for months. #2,017 - 400,000 signatures gathered towards repeal of Washington States Hidden Gas Tax

11/24/2023
The future of Washington’s carbon emissions laws may be decided by voters. On Tuesday, backers of an effort to repeal the state’s carbon market announced they have enough signatures to put it before lawmakers and, possibly, voters next November. The citizens’ advocacy group “Let’s Go Washington” turned in more than 400,000 signatures for Initiative 2117. The measure’s supporters say it would repeal the climate law — which they blame for high gas prices in Washington. Standing outside a Shell gas station in Kent, hedge fund owner and Let’s Go Washington founder Brian Heywood said they have more than the minimum 324,516 valid signatures needed — packed in boxes and loaded into a truck, which the group then delivered to the Secretary of State Steve Hobbs’ office in Tumwater to be verified. #2,016 - Oklahoma City hands out citation to local business for garbage left behind by homeless encampment on city property

11/23/2023
An Oklahoma City business that sits in a heavily populated homeless neighborhood has been issued a citation by the city, saying the company is responsible for trash that sits in an alleyway next to their business. The company claims the trash does not belong to them and turned to KFOR for help. KFOR went to the property on Tuesday and found trash in the alleyway. There were clothes, empty beer cans and much more that would likely not belong to a company that makes signs. “We have to clean up feces off the back of our building all the time. There’s needles. It’s a safety concern for us, and now we are either forced to approach them or be fined,” said Taylor Morris, J&B Graphics. #2,015 - Portland's homeless camping ban mired in political dysfunction

11/23/2023
In a letter obtained by KGW sent to Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler earlier this month, Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt outlined his concerns with Portland’s daytime ban on homeless camping. The ban itself has been somewhat of a never-ending saga, leaving Portlanders confused over how it would be enforced, which was the crux of Schmidt's letter. If a homeless person violated the ban three times, they could face fines or jail time. Though unable to talk with KGW on camera, Schmidt’s letter stated that the ban required Portland Police officers to give his office the following documentation when someone violated it: Police report(s) documenting the date, time, location, and nature of the camping violation on each of the three dates. Copies of the two prior written warnings required by PCC 14A.50.025(A). If police are issuing a citation on the grounds that the subject is not “involuntarily homeless,” in addition to the items listed above, we also need an identified witness, with contact information, who can establish that shelter or other options for housing were accessible to the subject on each date in question.
