Horror Movie Night

Comedy

Join Matt, Scott and Kyle each week as they suffer through horror films both forgotten and beloved. The trio capture the excitement and the disappointment of renting movies in the 80’s and 90’s. For every surprising thrill like American Gothic the trio suffer through there's 10 disappointing flops like Terror Toons. The show combines the nostalgia of renting videos with a snarky comedic blend that will make you feel sentimental while simultaneously putting a smile on your face. So dust off your VCR, make some popcorn and check behind every door because it’s… Horror Movie Night.

Hardware (1990)

9/11/2025
Let’s go back to the bad old days when HMN was the Reddit Horror Club; at the time, we rotated through the members of the group, doing 2 movies a week chosen by different people. One of them was HARDWARE (1990), so it’s only fitting that over a decade later it’s suggested by a listener and here we are doing a proper discussion of it on the show! If you can ignore how much Richard Stanley put of himself into the pervy landlord (who gets absolutely ROCKED by the killer robot later on), this is an almost flawless slice of grimy cyberpunk/post-apocalyptic horror. Sleepover Nightmare (2005)

9/4/2025
Listener Submitted Month kicks off with a deep cut from our neighbor to the north. Sleepover Nightmare is in strong contention of being the cheapest movie we've ever covered (and that includes last week's Birdemic). This Canadian slasher film has the feeling of a shot on video 90's slasher but with a little less charm. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Birdemic: Shock & Terror (2010)

8/28/2025
We’ve been hard at work only discussing movies with anniversaries this year, and to show his displeasure, Matt chose to punish us all with the unwatchable BIRDEMIC: SHOCK AND TERROR (2010). Arguably one of the worst movies ever made. it really lives up to the hype and is without a doubt the dumbest thing we’ve ever discussed on the show. Hope you like terrible CGI bird clipart flapping in the foreground (though an argument can be made that it takes away some of the sting of the absolutely stupid dialogue). Species (1995)

8/21/2025
Like many boys in the mid-90s, naked women were very scary for your gentle HMN hosts. The concept of their strange anatomy, ability to smell your fear (and possibly boners) as well as their heightened intelligence made them seem like they were from another planet… So of course we studied SPECIES (1995) for clues on how to defend ourselves. We’re grown up now but still mystified by the kinder sex (even though we live with them these days; we are simple creatures) and need a refresher on what to do about hot alien monsters. Flatliners (1990)

8/14/2025
This week Scott let us bully him into picking Flatliners because neither Kyle or Matt had seen it before! The movie dances the line of horror or thriller but whatever genre it is, it's undeniable that it's perfect for Horror Movie Night!! Humanoids from the Deep (1980)

8/7/2025
It was said that we would never cover this film, but since it's 45th anniversary is this year and Matt need to get his quota of "stay out of the water" films, it was too much of a perfect storm to ignore! Hellraiser Inferno (2000)

7/31/2025
Did someone say “Craig Sheffer back-to-back shows?” Because you bet your tush it’s a Craig Sheffer back-to-back show this week as we raise some H - E - double hockey sticks with 2000’s film noir HELLRAISER: INFERNO. This is actually a double two-fer, as we have now discussed both of Scott Derrickson’s directorial offerings in 2000, lest we forget about URBAN LEGENDS: FINAL CUT, which is ironically one month older than INFERNO. He was certainly busy at the beginning of the new millennium, but at what cost? Is this a good Hellraiser sequel? Is this really even a Hellraiser sequel? You can find a lot of opinions on the internet about it, and here we are with our own unsolicited review. What’s your pleasure? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Nightbreed (1990)

7/24/2025
It’s the height of summer and the days are heating up… Better head to the graveyard and hang with the B-Men (B stands for Barker, of course). We’re cooling down with the oiled up monsters of 1990’s NIGHTBREED, which some rightfully call “monster X-Men” while others questionably call “creatures I wouldn’t kick out of bed.” You get tons of cool monster designs, David Cronenberg as a serial killer psychiatrist, and of course the beloved Doug Bradley as the leader of the pack. It Came From Beneath the Seas (1955)

7/17/2025
We’re back with another installment of STAY OUT OF THE DAMN WATER and we got the illustrious Ray Harryhausen to demonstrate what happens if you don’t heed our warnings. It’s time for some Atomic Age scifi horror as we dive into 1955’s IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA, an age-old tale of why humans should leave cephalopods to their own devices. Otherwise you’ve got angry tentacles and the ability to squeeze into tight spots and guess what? No one wants that! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Crocodile (2000)

7/10/2025
Spring break came a little late this year but don’t worry, the message stays the same - STAY OUT OF THE DAMN WATER! We’re pontooning like it’s the millennium with Tobe Hooper’s 2000-era romp CROCODILE. No matter what your drunk frat boy pals or the floozy with striped hair tells you, it is decidedly not safe to party in the swamp and bust open all of those mysterious reptile eggs you found. And don’t even think about stowing one away in your girlfriend’s backpack - she’ll have to carry it around like a fool while being chased by an angry lizard. Don’t drink and boat or you’ll get chomped in half this week on Horror Movie Night! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Return of the Living Dead (1985)

7/3/2025
Do you wanna party? It’s party time! To celebrate 249 years of American independence, we’re resurrecting literally everyone in the graveyard for a dance-off and you’re invited (as long as you’ve got brains to spare). We’ve somehow gone 10 years without discussing it outright, so it was high time we kicked off Fourth of July with 1985’s RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD. You know it, you love it, now let’s quote it. Revenge of the Creature (1955)

6/26/2025
It’s summer and Matt is back with his annual campaign, “Stay out of the damn water!” Kicking it off is the classic tale of man’s desire to control nature, 1955’s REVENGE OF THE CREATURE. These pesky American scientists couldn’t leave well enough alone so they went back to the Amazon, captured the gillman and brought him to Florida to teach him what it’s like to be an animal at Sea World via shock therapy. So basically how everyone feels living in Florida against their will. Marvel at the lengths science will go to put fish in pants on this week’s episode of Horror Movie Night! Mirror Mirror (1990)

6/19/2025
In times of great upheaval, it helps to sit and do some self-reflection… unless of course that self-reflection is in a cursed mirror. That’s a big no no. To illustrate what kind of mayhem this leads to, we’re watching 1990’s lost gem MIRROR MIRROR. It’s got Temu Lydia Deetz in it so you know this thing is a blast! Let’s stare at ourselves until our demonic alter egos take over our lives and leave us in a hellish time loop this week on Horror Movie Night! Learn more about your ad choices. Friday the 13th (1980)

6/12/2025
It’s the 45th anniversary of one of horror’s most beloved franchises, and we have the holiday it took its name from falling in the month it’s supposed to be occurring - there was no way we were going to let this kind of opportunity slip away from us! We’re one step closer to discussing the entire franchise now that we’ve finally picked FRIDAY THE 13TH (1980) and you know what? There’s nothing wrong with that. This is a warm blanket kind of summer slasher for us and yet we were still able to surprise each other with some new factoids and anecdotes - that makes us three very happy campers! Vampire in Brooklyn (1995)

6/5/2025
There’s nothing like summer in the city, except perhaps summer in the city plus a smooth operator who also happens to be an immortal bloodsucker trying to steal your girl (who is also your coworker and that’s just an HR violation waiting to happen…). Things are heating up this week as we talk Wes Craven’s much-maligned Eddie Murphy vehicle VAMPIRE IN BROOKLYN (1995). It’s actually a pretty solid flick and doesn’t deserve the flak it got, let’s see if we can change some hearts and minds! Join the Patreon Buy from our Store Learn more about your ad choices. The Exorcist III (1990)

5/29/2025
Everybody loves an underdog story, so when a franchise is able follow up a stinker of an entry with a fan favorite, you know we’ve got to talk about it. EXORCIST III: LEGION ((1990) is one such film and it atones for every sin from Exorcist II: The Heretic - just check its prayer beads! It’s got William Peter Blatty in the writer AND director’s chair, George C. Scott and Brad Dourif… You can’t go wrong with that kind of star power. It’s also got jump scares that rival the original, another feat worth praising. Come wash away your transgressions with a confession session at the church of HMN! Constantine (2005)

5/22/2025
Imagine a time when the biggest action star in the world wasn’t some musclebound dude with an oiled-up chest wearing a loincloth, but rather a tall, slim guy whose catch phrase was “whoa.” If you’re imagining Keanu Reeves, good; if you’re imagining him as John Wick, you gotta go back further, to the Matrix days of the early 00s. Now, imagine that he and a young Shia LaBeouf are kickass exorcists and the guy from Bush is a demon. Seriously! That might’ve been the elevator pitch for CONSTANTINE (2005). Based on the comic book Hellblazer in the most superficial ways, this one might be a contentious pick for those who don’t consider it horror, but it’s our show and we say angels, demons and sick forearm sigil tatz give it a pass. He Knows You're Alone (1980)

5/15/2025
What would a year of anniversaries be without a slasher who goes after brides so they can never see their first wedding anniversary? On the other hand, he also seems to be willing to kill people who are only tertiarally related to his victims - like the guy working at the wedding dress shop who was unlucky enough to do a fitting for one of the killer’s potential victims. Pretty sloppy if you ask us. We get into this and more to celebrate the nuptials of HE KNOWS YOU’RE ALONE (1980) and Horror Movie Night this week on the show! Learn more about your ad choices.
