A Meditation on Feeling Tones, with Sean Fargo

6/7/2023
As thought, emotion, or sensation arises in our field of awareness, it quickly gets labeled as pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral. This process of classifying our likes and dislikes is not wrong or bad. But when we mindlessly, habitually react to these labels, we sometimes bring harm to ourselves or others. Mindfulness of the feeling tones of pleasant, unpleasant and neutral is the first step in transforming this reactivity into a skillful, healthy response. This practice helps set the foundation for resilience and a balanced, stable mind. In this guided meditation, Mindfulness Exercises founder Sean Fargo invites us to become aware of sensation in the body. Whether we feel that sensation as pleasant, unpleasant or neutral, we practice holding all of it with tenderness and care. Please listen in a safe, quiet place where you can be relatively free from distraction. Find a posture that balances comfort with alertness, whether standing, seated, or lying down. May this meditation be of benefit to you in your mindfulness journey. Please remember that mindfulness practice is not a replacement for therapy. Listen with care and self-compassion and practice within your window of tolerance. If this, or any other episode, triggers overwhelming, uncomfortable feelings, contact your healthcare provider. A Meditation for Frustration, with Sean Fargo

5/24/2023
Annoyance, frustration and anger can be challenging emotions to work with. We often judge ourselves for feeling frustrated, equating this emotion with negativity or perhaps thinking it makes us a ‘bad person’. Other times, we might feel so righteous about our frustration that we hold to it tightly. By exploring how frustration feels in the body, we can learn to be present as it arises, neither avoiding nor grasping at it. In the resulting space that’s created, we can invite in self-compassion and understanding. After all, these emotions are not good or bad, nor right or wrong, they are what make us human. In this guided meditation, Mindfulness Exercises founder Sean Fargo asks us to recall a past moment of slight annoyance or mild frustration. By sitting with this sensation and observing it, we learn we can let it move as it wants to. Microdosing Mindfulness, with Jake Eagle and Sean Fargo

4/19/2023
If you could realize the stress-reducing and heart-opening benefits of mindfulness with a practice that takes less than 1 minute per day, would you practice more often? Neuroscience has shown that when it comes to changing our brains, consistency is more important than the duration of our practice. But it’s not always easy to fit in a meditation daily. Microdosing mindfulness might be the solution we need to practice more often, and with less resistance. In this episode, Sean Fargo speaks with Jake Eagle, co-author of The Power of Awe: Overcome Burnout & Anxiety, Ease Chronic Pain, Find Clarity & Purpose - In Less Than 1 Minute Per Day. A Moment of Happiness Meditation, with Sean Fargo

4/12/2023
Most of us only want to be happy and free from our pain. But how comfortable are we with the sensation of happiness? It can be challenging to be present with this emotion, especially in the face of so much global suffering. But it’s of great benefit to both ourselves and the world to be capable of connecting to joy. When working with happiness in meditation, we do so not as a means of bypassing or avoiding negative feelings, but to spend time familiarizing ourselves with positive emotion. In this guided meditation with Sean Fargo, we’re invited to cultivate feelings of happiness by bringing to mind a past joyful experience. By working with memory, we invite happiness into the present moment. In this way, happiness is always available, here and now. Identifying Adverse Effects of Meditation, with Dr. Willoughby Britton

3/29/2023
Meditation’s benefits are often overhyped, while its discomfort, challenges, or ongoing adverse experiences tend to be little mentioned - even though the latter happens to around 1 in 10 meditators. This disparity can leave those who struggle with meditation feeling very alone and unsure where to find help. In this episode, we hear from clinical psychologist, professor and mindfulness expert Dr. Willoughby Britton. Willoughby presents a thorough, research-based overview on how to identify the adverse effects of meditation. She explains which ones are most likely to happen during mindfulness-based meditations. Sensing Into the Heart Meditation, with Sean Fargo

3/22/2023
How often do we pause to ask the heart what it might want most in this moment? Most of us spend our days stuck in our heads, problem-solving and operating out of habit, disconnected from the heart and its needs. If we stopped to listen, what would the heart say? In this guided meditation, Sean Fargo invites us to sense into the heart with caring curiosity, to enhance loving acceptance of whatever is present in the heart right now. We are guided to notice the presence of opposites - light or heavy, dry or moist, pleasant or unpleasant, numb or full of emotion. Perhaps in our hearts, we hold all of these things. Caring Curiosity Meditation, with Sean Fargo

What’s uncomfortable or challenging in our lives tends to become the focus of our attention. This negativity bias can even arise within our mindfulness practice. But by framing mindfulness as caring curiosity, our attention becomes less judgmental and naturally imbued with more compassion and acceptance. In this guided meditation, Sean Fargo invites us to sense into the body with caring curiosity, a gentle awareness in which whatever arises is not labeled as good or bad, but accepted, just as it is.
