The 4 Pillars of Well-Being, with Dr. Richie Davidson

10/4/2023
Well-being can be an abstract term. We’ve all heard that things like eating well, exercising and meditating are good for us, but we might be unsure why, or if they even work. For mindfulness and meditation researcher Dr. Richie Davidson, well-being is a measurable skill. And like any skill, it can be cultivated with practice. Well-being, he says, improves when we train in four specific areas: awareness, connection, insight and purpose. In this episode, Davidson introduces us to these pillars of well-being that, when nurtured, result in a life of greater comfort, health and happiness. To learn more about the science behind this transformation, listen to his previous episode, #051: The Modern Science of Mindfulness. Dr. Richard J. Davidson is a research professor of psychology and psychiatry and the Founder and Director of the Center for Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His non-profit, Healthy Minds Innovations, uses the discoveries and insights gleaned from research to create tools to help people around the world build skills of well-being. This talk is a brief excerpt from Dr. Richie Davidson’s guest teacher presentation to those enrolled in the Mindfulness Exercises Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Training Program. This unique, online, self-paced certification program balances pre-recorded webinars with live mentorship. Why the Mind Won’t Stay Still, with Liam McClintock (Karuna)

9/20/2023
The directive to just ‘be here now’ as a solution to everyday discomfort and mental agitation sounds simple enough. But in practice, it’s not at all easy. Why does the mind seem to be inherently unstable? In this episode, we hear from Liam McClintock, founder and CEO of FitMind and a graduate of the Mindfulness Exercises Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Training Program. He shares both ancient wisdom, and the latest neuroscience, to uncover the causes of our discontentment. Contentment with Simply Being, A Meditation with Sean Fargo

9/13/2023
In a state of contentment, we fully accept the truth of this present moment, just as it is. There’s nothing missing and there’s nothing here that shouldn’t be. Mindfulness meditation, the art of practicing non-judgmental presence, can help us cultivate contentment for a more satisfactory experience of our everyday life. In this guided meditation, Sean Fargo invites us to ground ourselves in the body and in this moment by sensing into physical sensation. Having rooted ourselves in presence, we are encouraged to bring mindfulness to the quality of contentment. Familiarizing ourselves with the sensation of contentment helps us to be more aware of it outside our formal practice. Please listen in a safe, quiet place where you can be relatively free from distraction. Practice with eyes opened or closed, in a posture that balances comfort with alertness. How to Hardwire Happiness, with Rick Hanson

9/6/2023
Positive states, such as happiness, joy, moments of embodied presence or mindfulness are common, but they’re often short-lasting. Is it possible to transform these fleeting states into lasting traits? Even in moments of hardship or suffering, we can still be rooted in happiness by growing the good that lasts. In this episode, psychologist, author and mindfulness teacher Dr. Rick Hanson teaches us why hardwiring happiness is indeed possible, and how to do it with positive neuroplasticity training. Rick Hanson is a Senior Fellow of UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center, and a New York Times best-selling author. He previously joined the Mindfulness Exercises podcast to talk about neuro-learning and amplifying our meditation practice. Opening to Gladness, A Meditation with Sean Fargo

8/30/2023
Who makes your heart sing? Sensing into the presence of someone who loves us deeply, who offers us unconditional kindness, can help us connect to present-moment feelings of gladness. This may be someone we know personally, or anyone we look up to as a source of care and comfort. In this guided meditation with Sean Fargo, we’re invited to bring to mind one such person, and to sense into the gladness we feel when in their (imagined) presence. We explore that gladness as a sensation in the body and breath. By doing so, we become more familiar with it, and thus potentially more aware of its presence in everyday life. Please listen in a safe, quiet place where you can be relatively free from distraction. Practice with eyes opened or closed, in a posture that balances comfort with alertness. An Apprenticeship with Grief, with Francis Weller

8/23/2023
How can we bring mindfulness to grief? Grief is something we all go through, for ourselves, our loved ones, our communities, and our planet. And yet, many of us are afraid to open up to the strong emotions of grief, sorrow and loss. In this episode, we hear from psychotherapist, author and soul activist Francis Weller on how developing a long-term apprenticeship with grief can help us metabolize our sorrow and stay present for the fullness of this life. Francis Weller, MFT, is a master of synthesizing diverse streams of thought from psychology, anthropology, mythology, alchemy, indigenous cultures and poetic traditions, a style he calls soul-centered psychotherapy. He is the author of several books on loss, sorrow, and grief, and offers a 4-session audio course, An Apprenticeship with Sorrow: Community, Ritual, and the Sacred Work of Grief. A Meditation on Feeling Tones, with Sean Fargo

6/7/2023
As thought, emotion, or sensation arises in our field of awareness, it quickly gets labeled as pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral. This process of classifying our likes and dislikes is not wrong or bad. But when we mindlessly, habitually react to these labels, we sometimes bring harm to ourselves or others. Mindfulness of the feeling tones of pleasant, unpleasant and neutral is the first step in transforming this reactivity into a skillful, healthy response. This practice helps set the foundation for resilience and a balanced, stable mind. In this guided meditation, Mindfulness Exercises founder Sean Fargo invites us to become aware of sensation in the body. Whether we feel that sensation as pleasant, unpleasant or neutral, we practice holding all of it with tenderness and care. Please listen in a safe, quiet place where you can be relatively free from distraction. Find a posture that balances comfort with alertness, whether standing, seated, or lying down. May this meditation be of benefit to you in your mindfulness journey. Please remember that mindfulness practice is not a replacement for therapy. Listen with care and self-compassion and practice within your window of tolerance. If this, or any other episode, triggers overwhelming, uncomfortable feelings, contact your healthcare provider.
