PSP 376: How to Respond to Unhelpful Comments About Your Child’s Anxiety or OCD

7/23/2024
It is already tough trying to help our kids with anxiety or OCD, but it is even harder stomaching unhelpful comments and advice. Sometimes people are trying to be helpful and don’t mean to be upsetting. Some people are uneducated. And some people are judgemental and critical. Some people deserve education. Some people deserve boundaries. And some people should just be ignored. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I explore the different reasons why people give us unhelpful comments and advice and I break down my 4 different response types. PSP 375: Can the Movie Inside Out 2 Help Your Child’s Anxiety (or Even OCD?)

7/16/2024
It has been so nice to see all these films addressing our children’s mental health issues. The more these struggles can be normalized, the less stigma they’ll be for our kids! A couple of week’s ago I discussed whether you should show your child with OCD the film Turtles All the Way Down. If you missed that one, you can check it out here. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I explore how parents can use the movie Inside Out 2 to discuss and motivate their kids to work on anxiety and even OCD. 🌸 Sign up for my upcoming FREE series: Self-Care for Parents Raising Kids with Anxiety or OCD. *** This podcast episode is sponsored by NOCD. PSP 374: Loving the Child You Have vs The Child You Wanted

7/9/2024
Raising a child with anxiety or OCD can bring with it so many struggles, including our own grief and overwhelm. It is easy, and tempting, to bury our own raw emotions around our child’s anxiety or OCD struggles. But honoring and processing our feelings is equally important. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I have an honest conversation about the thoughts many of us struggle with but hate to admit. I talk about having compassion for your own journey while developing insight into what lens you are seeing your child through. PSP 368: Why OCD Can Get Worse with the Wrong Therapist

5/28/2024
When you bring your child to a cardiologist, you expect they know all the evidence based treatment interventions to help your child. When you bring them to an endocrinologist you assume they are an expert in all things endocrinology. But sadly you cannot assume the same when seeing a mental health therapist. The truth is not all therapists are properly trained and informed on how to assess, diagnose and treat OCD. That means we, as parents, have to have enough knowledge to spot a helpful versus a harmful therapist. We have to know what evidenced based approaches work and why. We have to ask the right questions to know that we are in the right place. 🌸 Get in-depth support to help your child with OCD in my online courses at AT Parenting Survival School. *** This podcast episode is sponsored by NOCD. PSP 365: Why Does My Child’s Anxiety or OCD Show Up More For ME?!

5/7/2024
One of the biggest questions I get from parents is, “Why does my child’s anxiety or OCD show up more for me?” It can be a source of contention when one parent sees all the struggles and the other parent sees nothing. It can cause people to finger point and waste unnecessary energy playing the blame game. The truth is…that is the norm. How do you feel when you pull back your accommodations around anxiety or OCD? Our parenting style plays a role in these questions. Your parenting style wasn’t developed out of thin air. We are a mix of our childhood experiences, our feelings around how we were parented and our hopes for our own kids. PSP 363: The Importance of Finding the Right Therapy for OCD | One Family’s Journey

4/23/2024
The wrong therapist can wreak havoc on a children’s OCD. That is why it is so important for parents to understand what are evidenced-based approaches specifically for OCD. It is also key to have the skills to decipher a qualified therapist from a non-qualified therapist. When Eve started having intrusive thoughts, she privately went to google to figure out what was going on. Fortunately for Eve she stumbled upon the right sites that helped her understand her thoughts were OCD. Many families aren’t so lucky, especially when it involves OCD themes like sexual orientation or harm to self or others. Even though Eve properly identified her struggles as OCD, it still took several therapists to find a qualified one that would help her make progress. Her father wasn’t so lucky. He had the same OCD themes in college and had little success from a general therapist, never knowing it was OCD until his daughter had the same theme. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I talk to Eve and her father Jon, as they share their struggles, their journey to find the right therapist and their bond through it all. 🌸 Want in-depth, ongoing support? PSP 362: The Use of Storytelling in Anxiety and OCD

4/16/2024
It can be hard to help kids navigate anxiety and OCD. Sometimes adding some creative ways to help validate, normalize and build skills to handle anxiety or OCD can be gold! One of my favorite ways to do that is through storytelling. Storytelling is a powerful tool. It can help kids understand how anxiety and OCD work. It can help talk about anxiety or OCD without discussing it directly. It can be a creative outlet to process emotions around anxiety and OCD. It can even be used to problem solve and teach tools on how to crush anxiety and OCD. In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I’ll discuss the many helpful uses to add the creative approach of storytelling to help kids with anxiety or OCD. PSP 361: A Parenting Journey Raising a Child with Emetophobia

4/9/2024
Raising a child with Emetophobia, the fear of throw up, can be an isolating experience. It brings with it all sorts of fears. What if they can’t overcome their struggles? What if they can’t go to school? What if they stop eating entirely? It is important that parents don’t feel alone on this journey. That is why I was so thrilled when Lauren, a parent in my AT Parenting Community, reached out and asked to be on my podcast. She was so excited about seeing her daughter’s progress that she wanted to share her story with others. PSP 360: Managing Our Anxiety When Our Child is Panicking

Your child is paralyzed with fear. They are nauseous. They are faint. They are immobilized. It is hard to watch as a parent. For many of us it can trigger our own panicky response. PSP 358: Psychologist Lori Long Talks About Life with Social Anxiety

3/19/2024
One of the hardest parts about social anxiety is the feeling you are the only one with these struggles. It actually feeds into the disorder quite well. It is a story that many of us with social anxiety tell ourselves. No one struggles like you do. No one thinks the way you do. No one would understand. When I had Lori and her colleagues, Katie and Mallory, from The Childhood Collective on my podcast, I was surprised when Lori said she had social anxiety. I wanted to hear more and asked her if she’d be willing to come on the show to discuss it. Luckily she agreed! In this week’s AT Parenting Survival Podcast I sat down with Lori to hear about her social anxiety struggles, how it impacted her career and how treatment turned everything around. If you want to learn more about social anxiety follow me on Instagram @socialanxietyreality. To tap into the work of Lori, Katie and Mallory go to The Childhood Collective. 🌸 Want more in-depth support with social anxiety? PSP 357: How to Boost Your Child’s Self-Esteem with Jesse LeBeau

3/12/2024
Self-esteem and self-confidence can play a big role in our child’s journey with anxiety and OCD. When our anxious kids struggle they can feel overwhelmed with emotions of shame and isolation. They might beat themselves up for being different or for having difficulties. Self-esteem can also play an integral role in how our kids approach anxiety or OCD. Do they have an I can’t attitude or do they feel confident that they can use skills to overcome anxiety and OCD? Self-esteem work is always a crucial supplement to anxiety and OCD treatment. That is why I invited Jesse LeBeau, one of today’s most highly sought-after youth motivational speakers, to join us on the AT Parenting Survival Podcast. In this episode we’ll explore what tools we can offer our kids to help boost self-esteem and confidence. 🎉 My new book, Crushing OCD Workbook for Kids was just released.
