6/18/2025
TRUE HOUSE STORIES® W/ JOHN LUONGO # 146 INTERVIEWED BY LENNY FONTANA John Luongo is one of the true legendary DJ's andRemixers of the Disco eras. John has remixed tracks for just about everybody, from many of the gems of classic Disco acts like; The Jacksons, Dan Hartman, K.C. & the Sunshine Band, Melba Moore and Jackie Moore to the real Synth POP bands like Visage, Ultravox, Peter Goodwin, The The, and Men Without Hats. He has also worked with some great POP/Rock stuff for Queen, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Huey Lewis & the News, Hall & Oates, Greg Kihn, and Cheap Trick… Hailing from Boston, John ‘TC’ Luongo is widely seen as one of the most influential DJs and mixers of the Disco era. For over a decade, until he stepped away from mixing, almost everything he touched was a bonified hit. John started with music career back during his time at university. He studied Civil Engineering and graduated from Northeastern University in Boston, Ma. In 1973 with a degree of BS in Civil Engineering he knew he had a greater calling and this was music... While studying at university, John took on a part-time job as a DJ at a club in Boston called The Townhouse, which was, at that time, located above a bar called The Bull and Finch, upon which the TV show 'Cheers' is based. Sometime, while still at university he got his nickname - "TC", which some of his old-time friends still use to call him. The name refers to a cartoon character in the US who was very hip and cool. this cat was named "Top Cat". John's friends would tease him as "Top Cat” who was the leader of the gang, and John was the leader of the Disco scene in the New England area. Thus, the nickname, John "TC" Luongo! John later went on to be the DJ of a club called Rhinoceros, the largest business club in Boston, which eventually became the largest black disco in all of New England nd the East Coast and help him start his career in Radio, and as well help to start the record pools up in the Boston Area. The list goes on and on from this mastermind. Here is a mantra that John said at the 1978 National Disco Awards: The day Disco dies is the day people stop dancing. And people aren't about to do that. There will always be Disco in one form or another.” How right he was then and as he is now. He is active even today, running a publishing collection company, but let’s step back in time and have a chance to share a moment of him working on some of these amazing songs that are still in rotation today.

In 1983 through his European tastes and connections, Trevor was invited to play at Amnesia in Ibiza to spin his now mixed style of dance music. On Trevor’s return and throughout the mid-eighties he teamed up with longtime friend Paul Oakenfold to set up a club called "The Funhouse" playing similar sounds from his Ibiza experience alongside the popular Hip Hop and Go-Go sounds of that time. This was followed by the formation of his infamous “The Project" club and was now joined by also resident DJ Carl Cox. In the summer of ‘87 Trevor took "The Project Club" concept to Ibiza where together with Ian St Paul he opened Bar in San Antonio, playing to a very mixed crowd that was attracted by the then unusual combination of New Beat, Indie, Acid and House music Trevor had incorporated into his unique style. 11/27/2024
TRUE HOUSE STORIES® W/ MARK JAMES # 140 INTERVIEWED BY LENNY FONTANA With many decades of experience as a DJ and one of Australia’s most progressive promoters and dance music recording artists. MARK JAMES has been synonymous with dance music in Australia since the beginning. It all started in the 80’s where Mark’s frustration of trying to push dance music to a traditionally rock orientated Aussie market led him to setting up his own club nights and parties. As time went on around 1987 with the birth of acid house Mark finally began to see a light at the end of the tunnel and so did the punters, the turn around had begun. Mark hosted events which included the first of a string of international acts and DJ’s in Australia including INNER CITY, THE JUNGLE BROTHERS, the ID WORLD TOUR with GRAHAME PARK and MIKE PIKERING (M people). Into the 90’s Mark’s djing status had been pushed to the forefront of Australia’s finest with bookings all over the country. In 1990 it was time to get serious about making music which Mark had been dabbling in over the past couple of years with then long time girlfriend GINA G (of “Oh Ah just a little bit” fame). With Gina on vocals and good friend PEE WEE FERRIS helping on the production tip BASS CULTURE hit the charts with LOVE THE LIFE (used more recently 1998/99 Summer “Coke Cola” ad, and long running theme on Neighbours). Four singles followed featuring some of Australia’s finest vocalists including KATE CEBERANO, LISA MAXWELL AND SUZI AHERN along with an album all charting successfully in Australia and appearing on “Hey Hey It’s Saturday” no less than three times. I’VE LEARNED TO COPE stayed No.1 on JJJ for thirteen weeks running and featured in the Aussie movie “The Sum of Us” (Russel Crowe) and also broke into the UK dance charts with mixes from ERIC KUPPER. Mark’s own productions kicked off with a studio stint also in 1991 with CARL COX Eternal by Eternal reached No.1 on the Aussie dance charts, a top 40 UK DANCE HIT which even broke the national UK charts at No.73 in 1997 Mark remixed Eternal and hit the UK chart's again this track was one of the late great DJ TONY DE VITS most played records of 1997. Two more Eternal singles followed MIND ODYSSEY released on WARP records and made top 20 (UK dance) and in 1994 with a name change to ETERNAL RHYTHM, Deep Down which was licensed to several countries all with high chart positions (JOHN DIGWEED listed Deep Down in his top ten tracks of the year 1994).The 2000 remix of Deep Down released on Quad UK appears on loads of mix cd's including DANNY HOWLES. Gordon Mac interview podcast hosted by Lenny Fontana # 135 - True House Stories®

5/29/2024
TRUE HOUSE STORIES® W/ GORDON MAC # 135 INTERVIEWED BY LENNY FONTANA Kiss FM first broadcast 7 October 1985 as a pirate radio station, initially to South London then across the whole city, on 94FM. Kiss FM was founded by Gordon "Mac" McNamee, George Power (of London Greek Radio), and Tosca Jackson, with its engineer Pyers Easton. Transmitting seven-days from the start, it would be regularly taken off-air by the authorities and so became a weekend operation shortly afterwards. The station developed a cult and committed following across Greater London, with figures in the press at the time stating that the station commanded some 500,000 listeners while operating as an unlicensed pirate station, and an Evening Standard readers' poll in 1987 put Kiss second, behind Capital Radio. Gordon Mac approached a successful London club promoter, Guy Wingate, to discuss ways of improving the Kiss FM profile. As a result, Wingate launched the very successful Kiss nights at the Wag Club (which included the first ever UK Acid House party – an idea put forward by Colin Faver and Danny Rampling), both DJs on the station. Mac and ten of the DJs on the station including Norman Jay, Jonathan Moore, Colin Faver, Trevor Nelson, and Tim Westwood would become "shareholders" in a company called Goodfoot Promotions, with Mac heading up the station as its majority holder. By 1988, Kiss was at its strongest with a DJ line-up which had become the cream of London's clubland, and in that December, Mac and the other shareholders would announce that they would decide to close down in order to apply for a legal license. Listen to how Gordon Mac goes up the ladder and then leaves it all behind to come back eventually and create his next venture called Mi-Soul on Dab.
