Join us for an accordion conversation as our panel of guests—each a passionate advocate for the accordion —shares their insights, anecdotes, and tales. Here’s a run-down of our panelists: Frank Anderson: A Film Maker, a Musician and Wisconsin Historian. He played accordion on the Killdozer track "Free Love in Amsterdam" off the album “12 Point Buck”. He currently plays in a band called Zebra Mussel. Len Nelson: A seasoned accordionist and former radio host from Appleton, Wisconsin. He helped put a spotlight on local music in many ways during and after his radio career. Most notably by starting a show called “Home Brewed” on WAPL which continues to this day. He currently acts as the MC and plays accordion in the band STEEM. Danny Jerabek: Hailing from Ripon, Danny is a multi-instrumentalist. His love affair with the accordion began early, fueled by family traditions and the spirit of Wisconsin’s festivals. Danny’s fusion of genres—rock, polka, and everything in between—has breathed new life into the accordion’s legacy. During June of 2011 a couple of my siblings and I planned a trip to Washington that we dubbed "Grunge-Cation". Being huge fans of Nirvana it seemed like the perfect time to go see the EMP's (at the time) Nirvana exhibit. Tony had been in contact with Kurt Cobain's Grandpa, Leland Cobain, and arranged for us to visit with him. It's been 30 years since the passing of Kurt Cobain and seemed like a good time to get Tony and Kelly together to reflect on our visit with Leland and Gary Cobain. We don't remember everything but hopefully you'll find some of this interesting. During our conversation we watched some of the videos we recorded at Leland's. If anything, we've got our memories recorded in case we forget anything else! Leland Cobain was born in 1923 and passed away in 2013. Appleton media giant Len Nelson referred to these guys as “The Fox Valley musical legends and golden gods of the local and regional scene in the latter 80s to mid-90s”. Frank Anderson is a versatile creative force, donning multiple hats as an Animator, Director, Author, Musician, and Historian. His musical journey has been a lifelong passion, with stints as a West Coast musician for Country Western acts and later as a session musician at Smart Studios in Madison. Frank also co-directed the film "The Life of Reilly" and penned the acclaimed work "Wicked Fox Cities." As the curator of Wisconsinology.com, he's a dedicated chronicler of Wisconsin's rich history. Presently, Frank plays steel guitar in the surf rock band Zebra Muscle. In an inspiring endeavor, he will be collaborating with members of renowned bands like Soul Asylum, Garbage, Fountains of Wayne, Belly, and others at Joey's Song this upcoming January, all united in the fight against Epilepsy. Jenna Kopitske is a drummer, pianist, and composer who has appeared at a wide range of venues throughout the state of Wisconsin for many years. She recently moved to Nashville, TN, and after a few months, she picked up her first national tour drumming/bandleading with Hawaiian country artist Waylon Nihipali. While in Nashville, she landed her first endorsement with her favorite cymbal company, Paiste Cymbals. Within a year, she was invited to perform at the Montisi-Nashville Indie Music Festival in Italy, drum at the Grand Ole Opry, and score the music to a horror short filmed entitled “Pure Evil” directed by Walter J. Buck. She also teaches in-person and virtual piano and drum lessons as well as studying country, classic rock, blues, contemporary and pop music.
