LDS International Temple Building: The Same Controversial Playbook?

5/21/2024
On this episode of Mormonish Podcast, Rebecca and Landon sit down with anthropologist Jason Palmer to discuss LDS temple building in Peru. Many of the same elements of the LDS church's playbook used in the United States to push a temple through city government in an area it is not zoned for, seem to be used on the international stage too,. Jason is the author of the "Forever Familias: Race, Gender, and Indigeneity in Peruvian Mormonism," and shares his expertise with us as we shine a spotlight on two Peruvian LDS temples and the intricate process of governmental approval required to get them built. Latter Day Shame Culture: For the Strength of Youth

5/17/2024
On this episode of Mormonish Podcast, Rebecca and Landon are joined by David Morris to dive into the history of the LDS church’s For The Strength of Youth Pamphlet. Since the mid-1960s, this pamphlet has been given to young people in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints to guide their behavior and make sure they understand the dos and don’ts of growing up in the LDS church. David has compiled visuals from these pamphlets, posters, pictures and more, throughout the decades to present us with a clear idea of what the purity culture themes were and how they have changed today. We know you’ll find this episode nostalgic as we take you back through the pamphlets of your youth. ***How to DONATE to Mormonish Podcast: If you would like to help financially support our podcast, you can DONATE to support Mormonish Podcast here: https://www.mormonishpodcast.org/support Also at: PayPal: https://paypal.me/BiblioTechMedia?cou... The Haka; A Case of Cultural Appropriation by the LDS Church?

5/7/2024
On this episode of Mormonish Podcast, Rebecca and Landon are joined by Dr. Hemopereki Simon to discuss his recent article, "Rolling our eyes towards god: an intervention arising from Mormon missionary YouTube activity and the cultural (mis)appropriation of haka." Dr. Simon discusses the haka’s cultural background and many ways in which it is culturally appropriated. He specifically explores the (mis)appropriation of haka by a group of Latter-day Saint missionaries in Wangarratta, Australia, who wrote and performed an English-language haka that can be viewed as violent and offensive to those who understand the true significance of the haka. We also discuss the LDS church and white patriarchal salvation, framed by the use of the haka by white LDS missionaries. This is very interesting topic and we're very glad that Dr. Simon was able to join us for an episode of Mormonish. ***How to DONATE to Mormonish Podcast: If you would like to help financially support our podcast, you can DONATE to support Mormonish Podcast here: https://www.mormonishpodcast.org/support Also at: PayPal: https://paypal.me/BiblioTechMedia?cou... The Beehive State by Rob Lauer: A Readers' Theater Production

5/3/2024
Mormonish Podcast's Rebecca and Landon are joined by playwrite Rob Lauer as we present Rob’s award winning play "Beehive State" as a readers' theater theatrical production. The play centers around a polygamous family in post manifesto era Utah and was written by Rob Lauer, who is a post Mormon and now a member of Reformed Mormonism. He is also the former director of The Hill Cumorah Pageant. The play is about the complex era of post manifesto polygamy in Utah.! It’s a wonderful play with humor and wit, yet deals intelligently with the serious dynamics of a family in 1903 still living "The Principle" in a changing church. The play was originally performed on Sunday, March 17, 2024 ***How to DONATE to Mormonish Podcast: If you would like to help financially support our podcast, you can DONATE to support Mormonish Podcast here: https://www.mormonishpodcast.org/support Also at: PayPal: https://paypal.me/BiblioTechMedia?cou... 4/30/2024
On this episode of Mormonish Podcast, Rebecca and Landon are joined again by our good friend Ganesh Cherian to discuss the orgin of Mormonism and the LDS church. Using clues and markers from the replacement text for the missing 116 pages, Ganesh provides some really intriguing information regarding the actual timeline of Book of Mormon composition and the formation of the early Church of Christ, later known as The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. LGBTQ, Married, and Mormon: Same Sex Couples Share Their Real Stories

4/9/2024
On this very special episode of Mormonish Podcast, Landon and Rebecca are joined by four wonderful married LGBTQ couples who still attend and love the LDS church. This episode shines a spotlight on how different this attendance looks for each person as we talk with Austin and Dallin, Tyler, Bethany and Jackie, and Steven. Becoming aware over the last few months of othe LGBTQ married couples who seem to enjoy full participation and fellowship in their LDS wards, we wanted to learn more. We were so honored to find four married LDS LGBTQ couples who wanted to share their stories. When you hear these stories together, it's clear that local leadership struggles with no clear direction from the top or any formal policy. What you are left with is a roulette situation and the lives of LGBTQ are negatively impacted. As we watch these four stories, we are struck by the desire of these couples to remain in the church and in their LDS community. Each story is different, with varying levels of participation allowed, which makes it all the more poinant.
