If we’re talking about marriage, for instance, one person may see marriage as an arbitrary social construct, a philosophically meaningless relationship that may or may not have some practical benefits, while another may see marriage as a covenantal relationship between one man and one woman established by God with a distinct, positively meaningful purpose. Only in confronting the tragedy and horrors of death can we truly see and embrace what God promises. We may not be able to fully imagine the eternal glory Paul speaks of, but we certainly know affliction (2Co 4:17). We may not be able to fully grasp the concept of eternal, but we know all about transient (2Co 4:18). Death isn’t like ripping off a bandage with one quick pull, where the sting is sharp but fast. The sting of death is certainly sharp, but there’s nothing quick about it. Death is always taking from us, little by little, until it finally takes everything down to our last breath. Even then, it isn’t finished. Futility is a universal problem. Every people of every generation has faced this same dilemma. How can life or anything we do in life have any meaning if the end is the same for all mankind? (Ecc 7:2). According to Solomon throughout Ecclesiastes, it doesn’t matter whether we are wise or foolish, righteous or wicked, rich or poor, accomplished or not, the same event happens to us all (Ecc 2:14). In light of death, who are we? Are we significant? Do we have the value we naturally feel we have? Or, are we merely an insignificant speck in the universe, no better than a goldfish we flush down the toilet? As one author writes, “Man is literally split in two: he has an awareness of his own splendid uniqueness in that he sticks out of nature with a towering majesty, and yet he goes back into the ground a few feet in order blindly and dumbly to rot and disappear forever.” Who are we? “You will die,” the Bible reminds us over and over again. In fact, it’s on nearly every page. Directly or indirectly, from Genesis to Revelation, Scripture confronts us with our mortality on nearly every page. It will not let us forget that we will die. And you can’t unsee it either. Now that I’ve mentioned it, you’ll notice it every time you read your Bible. We can go through many of the motions of Christianity. We can stake our claim on the name, but none of it changes our hearts or our true identities. None of it saves us or guarantees us a place in heaven. Jesus taught, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (Jn 10:27). In other words, a genuine conversion to Christ is accompanied by a sincere desire to follow him. If we truly hear the voice of the Savior, we will instinctively want to pursue him.
