Adventures

4/21/2024
Not all who wander are lost. - J.R.R. Tolkein Do you like to experience adventures or are you afraid of new trails? Host Keerthi navigates the realm of adventures. Keerthi states that we are all called to adventure in our unique ways. Sometimes it comes as a whisper, a gentle urging to explore beyond the familiar. Other times, it arrives as a thunderous roar, impossible to ignore. But regardless of its form, the call to adventure beckons us to step outside our comfort zones, to embrace the unknown with open arms. Kirpa and Milan provide the various meanings of the word “adventure” and share adventures they’ve taken together in Yellowstone. They admit what scares them and where they’d like to travel. Saanvi Phaneendra does her segment of “Space Spotlight” as she showcases the adventure of each planet in the solar system. From daring flybys to the deployment of rovers and potential future manned missions, we'll explore what humanity has achieved and what we plan to achieve in our quest to understand our neighbors in space. Whether you skydive or dive in swimming pools, every day can be an adventure if you decide to explore. UFO... Contact from the Pleiades

4/7/2024
In the deepest sense the search for extraterrestrial intelligence is a search for ourselves. - Carl Sagan, an American astronomer and planetary scientist Welcome, cosmic explorers, to this week’s edition of Space Spotlight, with host Saanvi Phaneendra! UFO sightings have been a source of fascination and mystery for decades, sparking the imaginations of enthusiasts and skeptics alike. Reports of unidentified flying objects range from mysterious lights zigzagging in the night sky to detailed encounters with spacecraft of seemingly extraterrestrial origin. These accounts come from all corners of the globe and from credible witnesses, including pilots, astronauts, and military personnel, who describe experiences that challenge our understanding of technology and physics. The persistent question remains: Are we truly alone in the universe, or is there evidence of contact with extraterrestrial intelligence? Saanvi interviews documentary filmmaker and investigative author, Brit Elders about her two photo journal volumes of UFO…Contact from the Pleiades. This photo journal presents the unique contact case of a Swiss farmer, Billy Meier, who claims to have met with the Pleiadians hundreds of times, compiling many layers of evidence including notes on their conversations, hundreds of photographs, movie footage, audio recordings of the craft, landing tracks of the spaceships, dozens of witnesses, and even metal samples of the craft itself. UFO…Contact from the Pleiades takes the reader back to a time before home computers, digital photography and easily accessible photo enhancement programs. Yet the evidence—analyzed in laboratories around the world—could not be easily dismissed and supported the claims of the contacted, Billy Meier. The breath-taking images, profound words of the Pleiadians, and the extensive investigation that spanned seven years are as relevant today as they were forty-five years ago. Join Saanvi and Brit on this mysterious journey through the cosmos filled with wonders that surpass our wildest imaginations, including UFOs and other galactic civilizations. CRSIPR

3/31/2024
We are at the dawn of a new era in human history. New technologies have the potential to change the life of every person on the planet in profound ways.” - Francis Collins Would you like to birth children that look like Barbie and Ken? It may be possible in the not-too-distant future. In today’s broadcast, host Saanvi discusses something that sounds like it's straight out of a sci-fi novel but is actually happening in labs around the world. It's called CRISPR, short for Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats. CRISPR is opening doors we never even knew existed. Scientists are exploring treatments for genetic disorders that were once thought untreatable. Diseases like cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, and even some forms of cancer could potentially be corrected at the genetic level, offering hope to millions. Reporter of The Breakdown, Rory, did a deep dive researching CRISPR and his knowledge and presentation provide food for deep thought. He shares how CRISPR could solve many issues that have evaded the medical profession, such as eradicating HIV. Yet CRISPR could potentially be harmful or cause problems in the future if used incorrectly. Scientists could potentially add superhuman genes to an unborn or developing child and possibly to adults too, creating super soldiers destined for war. Could new genetic mutations benefit the human race making us smarter, and stronger than we already are? In her segment, Space Spotlight, Saanvi ventures into a realm where few have dared to dream: the intersection of CRISPR, gene editing, and space exploration. CRISPR holds the promise of making the cosmos more accessible to humanity, but it also challenges us to think deeply about our responsibilities as stewards of both our species and the environments we aspire to inhabit. 3/24/2024
“When your mental health becomes impacted by social media then it is time for a detox.” — Germany Kent Are you indulging in social media? How do you feel? Host Keerthi, who loves social media, navigates the negatives and positives of various platforms. She advocates for embracing imperfection and showcasing authenticity as well as digital detoxes. Keerthi also encourages celebrating other's successes, big or small, and showing kindness to strangers. Keerthi then interviews high school junior, Niru Shivakumar about the connection between mental health and social media. Niru is the founder of a nonprofit organization called Offline, which has been one of her main focuses for three years. She works with 5th grade classes across the Bay Area to educate students about the dangers and repercussions of social media as well as the effects it can have on mental health before they reach middle school. She does not use social media. Reporter, Kirpa, joins the conversation to discuss the pros and cons of social media and how it can affect our mental health. Her parents do not allow her to use social media and she understands that is because they care and want to keep her safe and healthy. If you use social media, remember, you are more than your follower count, more than your most liked post, and more than the sum of your social media presence. Skills Versus Abilities

3/17/2024
“Only those who have the patience to do simple things perfectly ever acquire the skill to do difficult things easily.” — James J. Corbett Skills and abilities? They sound like synonyms…but are they. An ability is defined as the capability to do something - while a skill is the ability to do something WELL. Host Julia discusses the differences between skills and abilities. Abilities are something you can just do. To accomplish a skill, you need the ability to do the thing. She shares the story of Don Chang, the creator of the clothing store, Forever 21. It’s a story of faith, hope, determination, and hard work. Both skills and abilities are malleable. They're not fixed traits that we're stuck with for life. They are clay in the hands of a sculptor, YOU, waiting to be molded into something magnificent. You can mold yourself into the person you want to be. Your skills are clay, you are the artist. The Wisdom and Power of Teen Girls

3/3/2024
“A girl should be two things: who and what she wants” ? Coco Chanel What are the pressures society puts upon teenage girls? Teen hosts Julia and Keerthi have a lively discussion about their struggles and experiences with peers, parents, and social media encounters, including posts of unrealistic body images and beauty standards. They then converse with guest author, Chelsey Goodan, with her book, Underestimated. It is obvious that Chelsey honors teen girls and really listens and cares about their challenges and concerns. Chelsea is nonjudgmental adult who teenage girls trust to share their innermost secrets and doubts — all the things they wish they could communicate to their parents and the world at large. She uniquely understands what makes teenage girls tick, and through this book, Goodan passes the mic to them. Rather than dismissing teenage girls based on fears or treating them as problems that need to be solved, Goodan encourages us as parents, and as a society, to help teenage girls unleash their power and celebrate their intrinsic wisdom, creating more healing and connection for everyone. With her vivacious personality, Chelsea conveys love and understanding while encouraging listeners to listen and engage with teens. On today’s segment of “Space Spotlight”, reporter Saanvi celebrates the pioneering women in space history and the inspiring lessons they've imparted to generations of young dreamers, especially the teenage girls who look up at the night sky and see a canvas of endless possibilities. She starts with Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman to orbit our planet. Then showcases Sally Ride's achievements and efforts in STEM education, followed by other young female space groundbreakers including Mae Jemison, Christina Koch, Katherine Johnson, and Peggy Whitson. The courage of these women encourages young women to aspire to leadership roles in their careers. Teen girls are wise and powerful. Overturning Wrongful Convictions

2/25/2024
“True peace is not merely the absence of tension: it is the presence of justice.” ? Martin Luther King Jr. Julia hosts a fascinating and insightful hour about the wrongful convictions of young people. She begins by citing the incarceration of Kenneth Hovland, who faced four decades of wrongful conviction. She also highlights DNA testing. The emergence of DNA technology has not only enabled us to identify perpetrators with unprecedented accuracy but has also served as a beacon of hope for those who have been wrongfully convicted. Organizations like the Innocence Project have tirelessly championed the use of DNA testing to exonerate innocent individuals, offering them a second chance at freedom and redemption. Since 1989, a staggering 575 people in the United States alone have been exonerated based on DNA testing. These are individuals who were once deemed guilty beyond a shadow of a doubt, yet whose innocence was revealed through the power of science and perseverance. Julia then interviews teen Bijan Taheri, founder and director of Youth for Innocence, an organization dedicated to overturning wrongful convictions. Through volunteering, Youth for Innocence gives students first-hand experience with criminal law, aid lawyers in investigating the thousands of letters they receive from prisoners claiming innocence while taking the first step for prisoners to achieve their exoneration. They provide an initial training program to teach student volunteers to evaluate cases, examine new evidence, and assist pro bono attorneys with RT notes and summaries of cases. Volunteers then apply this knowledge to real-life cases, gaining first-hand experience with legal work and the administration of justice, and earning community service hours. Bijan personally conducted RT notes for defense attorney Ellen Eggers, as seen on Netflix’s Innocence Files Episode 5, on cases to reinvestigate and exonerate innocent prisoners. The conversation is riveting and the topic is of critical importance. Tune in! Artificial Intelligence in the Classroom

2/18/2024
Artificial intelligence is the brush that paints the canvas of possibility, blending innovation with imagination to craft a future limited only by our dreams. - Chat GPT Education is critical to success. Host Julia and reporter of “A.I. and Us,” Kevin, talk about how A.I. can and does affect our lives and can be used in the classroom. Almost two centuries ago, what was taught was math, science, reading, writing, history, and foreign languages, and that hasn’t changed at all, not even what aspects of it were taught. At most, some topics were removed and some added, a few new textbooks here and there, but nothing meaningful. Artificial intelligence can integrate into the current curriculum, and have the curriculum adapt to it, and by extension, the rest of modern society. Technology has no limits, but humans do. Julia shares her experience and that of other students and teachers using A.I. She also asked ChatGPT to write an opening as the host of a radio show. It responded “Welcome, listeners, to today's special broadcast focusing on the use of ChatGPT in schools. I'm your host, Chat GPT, and I'm thrilled to guide you through this exploration of how artificial intelligence is revolutionizing education.” She exhibits how ChatGPT writes glorious poetry and very funny jokes. Julia was able to show the strengths and weaknesses of Chat GPT, including how the response was boring and non-engaging. The bottom line is that A.I. CAN be useful in the classroom. It’s what you DO with it, that makes a difference. Is Outer Space Our Next Home?

2/11/2024
“Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.“ – Arthur C. Clark This episode of Express Yourself! could be right out of a sci-fi novel! Could outerspace become our next home? Keerthi hosts and presents a segment suggesting the idea of venturing beyond our planetary borders. She believes it is more than just finding a new place to hang our space helmets; it's about expanding our horizons, both literally and metaphorically. It's about pushing the boundaries of what we thought possible and daring to dream of worlds beyond our wildest imagination. She wants to ignite the flames of curiosity, to inspire you to gaze up at the night sky with wonder and awe, to dream of worlds beyond our own and to dare to reach for them. In her segment, Space Spotlight, Saanvi starts with Mars as our first adventure. The journey ahead is about building physical infrastructure, but also about gathering the resilience, adaptability, and community spirit needed to live in such a different environment. Mars is like the Goldilocks of our solar system – not too hot, not too cold, and with a day almost as long as ours. It's got water ice, which is crucial for life, and it's the most accessible place for us to land, live, and learn about living on another planet. Plus, its surface has varied geography, from mountains taller than Everest to canyons longer than the U.S. is wide. It's the best shot we have at a second home in the solar system. So let us embrace the uncertainty of the cosmos, let us revel in the beauty of the unknown, and let us boldly declare that yes, outer space is indeed our next home. For in doing so, we embrace the boundless potential of the human spirit, and we affirm our place in the grand tapestry of the universe. Are you ready to launch? Wade and its profound implications for women's bodily autonomy. Providing a historical backdrop, she underscores the significance of landmark cases that paved the way for reproductive rights The Roe v. Wade decision, a watershed moment in 1973, recognized the right to choose abortion as protected under the 14th Amendment's right to privacy. Keerthi hosts and starts off the program with Nerd Extraordinaire’s alter-ego, British Keerthi, who works to convince everyone to become a debater. In segment two, Keerthi introduces our newest reporter, Saanvi, with her out-of-this-world segment, Space Spotlight. In today’s program, Saanvi talks about Starship by SpaceX. She dives into the latest achievements of this groundbreaking spacecraft. Fasten your seatbelts, as Express Yourself! blasts off into a world of innovation and space exploration! It’s the A.I. and Us segment with reporter Kevin as he investigates how A.I. can read our minds. Peer Pressure

1/14/2024
Hosts Hannah and Julia with reporter, Kirpa, weigh in on peer pressure, which is defined as “a feeling that one must do the same things as other people of one’s age and social group in order to be liked or respected by them.” When peer pressure is encouraging you to engage in a dangerous or illegal proceeding, learn to say “no”. “No” is a complete sentence and it takes practice to stand up to negative influences. Find friends who have the same ethics and values and who motivate you to be a better person. That is positive peer pressure. It is human nature to want to be liked, accepted, and approved. Surround yourself with people whose behavior and moral code match your own. Be a leader, not a follower.
