AJ Santos on Voyager 1 Latest
The Nasa team recently sent a "poke" to prompt V1's flight data system (FDS) and received a signal that differed from past attempts. A DSN engineer helped decode this signal, which may contain clues to the source of the issue. There is hope! The computers aboard the Voyager probes each have 69.63 kilobytes of memory, total. That’s about enough to store one average internet jpeg file. The probes’ scientific data is encoded on old-fashioned digital 8-track tape machines. Once it's been transmitted to Earth, the spacecraft have to write over old data in order to have enough room for new observations. The Voyager machines are capable of executing about 81,000 instructions per second. The smartphone that is likely sitting in your pocket is probably about 7,500 times faster than that. They transmit their data back to Earth at 160 bits per second. A slow dial-up connection can deliver at least 20,000 bits per second.

Ian Barton on Libation
Downloading and Decrypting Your Audible Books. I have a lot of books on Audible. I would like to download them in a format that is decrypted in case Audible goes "Mammaries skywards" in the future, or is taken over by another company that demands you pay for all your books again. I came across a free program called Libation. You can view it on GitHub and it can be installed on most operating systems. It has all sorts of filtering options and will download a postage stamp size icon. Note you can only download books that you have purchased from Audible.

AJ Santos on What’s Going On With Voyager 1? Future Looks Uncertain
Voyager 1 is the furthest any human object has ever gone from Earth. It is now over 15 billion miles from our planet, flying through interstellar space. Since its launch in August 1977, the spacecraft has remained in contact with Earth, but over the last several months, that communication has become nonsensical. Are we about to lose the second-longest operating spacecraft in human history?

Jeremy Harpham - I too was looking for a recent i5 or higher 16GB chromebook recently Gareth and couldn't find any models available in the UK. My Chromebox is 16GB but when I started monitoring memory usage (using diagnostics) I never saw a point when I was using more than 8GB - this is since Google optimised Chrome and Chrome OS with recent updates. In the end I bought the i5 8GB Acer 516GE and it is highly recommended as a great all-rounder with a fab 16" screen in a virtually 15" and light, too. The only downside is battery life where I tend to get around 6 hours compared to 10 or more on other Chromebooks - the price you pay for the spec I guess. £849 from Acer

Chad Dixon with his 2021 Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 Review
I mostly use a tablet for browsing the internet, maps, light gaming, watching streaming video content and video calls & conferencing. I can report that the A8 is excellent for all of these on its clear and bright 10.5" LCD screen. Audio quality is very good on its four Dolby Atmos speakers. There's no booming bass but it's definitely loud enough when watching music and concert videos and there’s a 3.5mm jack. Battery is pretty decent, 7040mAh. I could go a whole week with light use. 64GB I've filled already but there is an SD card slot. My gaming is mostly puzzles so I'm not pushing the graphics capabilities of its Unisoc Tiger T618 (12nm) Octa-core processor. Build quality has proved to be good so far. It's been in a folding case since day one. But even naked, its 508g 6.9 mm thick body feels very sturdy in the hand. The back does warm up a bit during a long video viewing session but no real problem. Overall, I'm very pleased with my purchase and at under £170. I would highly recommend this tablet for everyday use. You're getting a whole lot of tablet for a budget price.
Tech Addicts Review

Xerxes Hodivala on Samsung Store at Kings Cross
It’s a beautiful space with all their current products on display. I had to get my Fold 4 repaired under warranty. The S-Pen digitiser had failed on each side of the crease. They are going to replace the digitiser, inner screen, metal frame, hinge and both batteries as part of the service. It will basically be a new device when I get it back. The experience was first rate, as good as customer service at an Apple Store. This was actually the reason why I decided on a Samsung rather than a Pixel or OnePlus for my first folding device. I wanted something that I could take to a physical shop for repair if needed.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder
The (re)learning curve has been executed brilliantly well to get back up to scratch with functions. It's very pretty but very childish. The enforced 5 minutes at the start is annoying having to wait and read and watch all the clap-trap before you get to actually play at all. The constant text pop-ups are annoying too. Hopefully they go away in time and as you get further in. The gameplay though is super. I got through the first castle now. The controller is a bit annoying using the Switch Lite as the right raised joystick thingie is in the way of my thumb hitting multiple buttons on A, B, X, Y like I used to on the SNES controller. Overall though it's fabulous, fun and 2D nostalgic. A masterstroke by Nintendo. I think this will sell huge for xmas, especially for Japanese kids.

I've now seen this appear on my Chromebooks under SETTINGS > About Chrome OS > Update Schedule. My Lenovo Duet is now June 2030 and Lenovo Duet 5, the same. My Duet 3 is also showing June 2030

The SanDisk 512GB Ultra Fit USB 3.1 Flash Drive is really pretty good - works like a charm, almost invisible to the port, read/writes seem fast enough. Cool!

I swapped the Dell Hub/Station for another one I had kicking about and the lag with peripherals when attached to the laptop in exactly the same way is all gone. So even though I had tested the Dell thing on my GiantPC and it seemed to work fine, perhaps I was just lucky. Happy again now with Stream Deck doing what it should!

…a company from San Diego, California has built a stand alone EV charger that could be installed anywhere. This charger doesn't need to be connected to the grid (mains?). It has a giant solar panel that acts like an umbrella over the car. The user pulls up, plugs in and charges their vehicle. Great for those with sun, I guess!

Hi Gareth. I started my NAS journey some years ago. I use it extensively and most of my services run in Docker. I suggest you look at Nextcloud rather than using the built-in Synology services. Nextcloud is open source and free to use. It provides a cloud file service like Google Drive but also hosts your contacts and calendars which can then be synced through CalDAV and CardDAV to ask your other devices like phone, tablet, computers etc.. If you set up OnlyOffice you can edit and create MS compatible documents through a web browser, again on any device. There are many apps you can install from with Nextcloud too..
https://mariushosting.com/how-to-install-nextcloud-on-your-synology-nas/
Marius has lots of tutorials for installing all manner of things on a Synology NAS.
If you need any more help or advice please get in touch!
Ian Barton on BackupPC: Open Source Backup to disk
This is very useful for backing up your data to other computers/servers locally.
It can also backup to servers that are accessible remotely.
I backup my important data from my main computer to a couple of local servers.
You can configure it to keep incremental backups, so you can roll back to an earlier version of documents/spreadsheets/etc.
It's compatible with most operating systems.
Since the system is so flexible it does take some time to configure and requires tinkering with the Apache web server setup.
Since my complaint of referencing “the phone show”, I feel that every show there is a mention of or comment when phones are discussed.
Just to make me feel more apologetic could you make reference to “Mr Wilmot”, (the old top gear), that way I will know when you’re ridiculing me even further!
Keep up the good work, love all the shows / podcasts but this is my favourite one by far!
Regards Paul

A J Santos on Electric Cars Not so Green and Cheap? They Actually Cost More to Run
Comments from various members of our MeWe Group…
Batteries are an environmental disaster waiting to happen - they are likely to need replacing ⅔ times during the life of the car.
Emissions caused by the manufacturing process makes it worse for the planet.
Is Hydrogen a better eco-solution? It’s heavy and needs robust storage arrangements.
Did we know that there’s 20% VAT on Public Charging (but only 5% at home)?
General opinion is that we’re going the right way, but much work needed still.

Mike Shwartz on the Audio Pro Addon C5A Multiroom Smart Speaker
Never mind your Marshalls & your Sonos speakers, this C5A from Audio Pro (Swedish design) takes the prize for audio quality. Take my word for it, I'm a BBC sound engineer! It has internet radio, Bluetooth & Alexa built-in - and they can be doubled-up as a stereo pair with the app or just a mono multi-room setup. They have 4 preset buttons for your favourite radio stations and phono & 3.5mm line inputs. WiFi or wired ethernet. The speaker is actually stereo for the tweeters only. Position it nicely in the room and the bass is unbelievable! Top-end is crisp too. Really Hi-Fidelity! The app has bass & treble controls if you need them. Very highly recommended. The white one is currently cheapest at £164
