11/29/2016
Going back to basics this week, giving thanks to lots of helpful people and Christmas is it getting cold! From the original post http://www.thewooddaddy.co.uk/2016/back-to-basics-giving-thanks-and-christmas-its-cold-19/ Back to basics Well as this I forgot to switch the correct microphone on when recording this, I think I have proven my point. I didn't post a video last week because of a small crisis of confidence. I have decided I need to go back to basics after watching my last video. But I am going back to basics with my woodworking and my filming. I have been spending most of my awake time relearning things I thought I knew... hopefully you will see the results. Big Thanks! I want to say some thanks to a few people, but primarily this week to two people... Wes Swain at http://geeksmithing.com/ and Making Geeks Podcast Liam Charles - for helping me a long time ago and giving me a Dewalt Power driver.... which still works well today! @Liamoc13 on Twitter Also thanks to everyone for following me on twitter, Instagram and subscribing on youtube! In the Workshop Not a lot because I have had flu , snot, cold and been feeling rubbish. But I will be looking at making something wooden for Christmas and I will be making a platform bed for my youngest. Outdoors Well has been awful and now it's freezing... they are forecasting -10 C around here tonight, so hopefully our outside boiler will keep working and keep us warm... but it is is prone to freezing! Paris No news on Paris.... we wait for mid December. Podcast and Video recommendations this week None this week, but what about Casey Neistat ending the vlog hey? Stihl Giveaway! Stihl GB have sent me their new battery powered chainsaw, which I will be reviewing when there is a break in weather. However, once I have done the review I will be doing a giveaway. If you would like to get a chance of winning it then just sign up for my email newsletter. I should be doing the draw before Christmas. It is only open to UK Residents though, but I will be doing more giveaways in future through my newsletter, so sign up to be in with a chance of winning, where ever you live! Now go get some wood! Sourcing wood Farts Paris | #15 |

10/11/2016
The workshop is getting colder still, sourcing wood, projects on the bench, farts and relocation to Paris? Workshop It's getting even colder and I still haven't worked out how to heat the workshop. I have an old electric heater, but as the workshop is mostly made of wood I am very conscious of fire risk. Planer Thicknesser I took the plunge and bought a used Elecktra Beckum HC260 M planer / thicknesser or ebay. It's currently on a pallet truck on its way to me somewhere. But if you have experience of using one / setting it up then I would love to hear about. I am estimating jobs at the moment, rather than making. These include a wine rack, a fitted cupboard with solid Oak top, shelves for a child's bedroom and some alcove cupboards. Sourcing wood I went to find some prices for Oak boards at a local hardwood flooring company, Beech Bros. They have vast amounts of timber out the back and an offcuts room, which is ideal for the size and scale of projects I am doing at the moment. I had a bit of fun getting a price for some boards… basically they gave me a price in cubic metres. I am used to cubic feet and the prices seemed astronomical, £1,373 for a cubic metre. However, when you work that out into board size £39 seems pretty reasonable for rough sawn oak 4.2m x 220mm x 28mm. New Vlog style video I've posted a couple of new style of videos for me, more of a vlog than a project video. What do you think? Comments please on the video on my youtube channel. Outdoors A good visit to RHS Rosemoor in North Devon was had at the weekend. This was prompted by am email from Stihl's PR agency. We all went up and had a look at a new range of battery powered gardening equipment, including a chainsaw. I am going to do a review of it once they send me one to try out. Paris There may be a possibility that we will be relocating to Paris, more details to follow when we have them. The workshop heating and house points | #14 |

10/4/2016
The workshop is getting cold, so how best to heat it? Transform the behaviour of your kids with home points. Dig ditches for fun! Workshop It's starting to get cold and I am having to think about workshop heating. I have the an electric oil fired heater but it isn't enough. Also I am getting more concerned about the cold causing condensation on the tools, and rust, when I open the doors in the mornings. If you have any thoughts on how to combat this I would love to hear it. The lighting in the workshop also needs work. As it's getting darker earlier I am starting to notice the lower levels of sunlight whilst I am working. Again one for more thought, but it's probably tied to sorting out the electrics. Jobs completed this week so far include the pine breakfast bar ( pictures coming soon) and fitting some shelves. I am now looking for a planer/thicknesser, so if you have any recommendations for a sturdy but not too big machine for under £500 please let me know in the comments below. New Vlog style video I've posted a new style of video for me, more of a vlog than a project video. What do you think? Comments please on the video on my youtube channel. House / Home points. In one easy step we have transformed the behaviour of our children. We have simply instigated house points. Our three now have this system of positive reinforcement at school and they seemed to be responding to it well, so we thought we could use it at home. So far it's been great, no more "its boring" more "what jobs can I do dad?" Outdoors We were helping my father-in-law get a polytunnel up this weekend. So Sunday morning was spent digging a ditch in thick, wet clay soil. A much needed pub lunch was had and discussions of hiring a digger were also had. Now go get some wood! Autumnal but good | #13 |

9/27/2016
Autumn is here and we are feeling a bit flat, but the workshop is busy, so all is good. In the workshop Jobs this week include making a fitted breakfast bar and possibly repairing an old frog. I am also quoting for a fitted cupboard, replacing a rotten door frame and childs' bookshelf. Lesson fro this week is buy wood rough sawn not PAR (Planned All Round) or maybe you know it as just nice a smooth and square stuff. The difference is price is incredible, I had this fact really highlighted for me this week by one of the big DIY warehouse stores. I am thinking about which tools I need to do the jobs I am quoting on, a planer / thicknesser / jointer is now top of the list. I think a secondhand Dewalt 1150 is a reasonable trade off on price and quality without being too big. Being Dad Being back at school is taking its toll on my three, they have started to get colds, rashes and scrapes because they are tired. So the paediatric first aid course and first aid kit is coming in handy this week! Also homework seems to be coming thick and fast. Does it really benefit the children to do homework or should they be allowed downtime at home? What is the point of homework? Getting Outdoors I got the chance to run up Haytor, a Tor on Dartmoor, last week. it was beautiful and recharging for my soul. The autumn is great because of the bounty of fruit and veg now occurring, but pruning is looming. I will update on pruning equipment in the coming weeks. Exeter Blogging meet up. I am going tonight, so hopefully I will see some of you there. Thanks to Clio of Diary of a Devon mum for pointing it out to me. I will report back. Thats it, now go get some wood!

Woodworking with children | #10 |

8/3/2016
Celebrating getting to my tenth episode and woodworking with children in the summer holidays. I am celebrating today because I have made it to my tenth podcast episode and The Wood Daddy Podcast has been downloaded over 1,000 times. Time to break out the Guinness and eat a little pie! Also in this episode of the Wood Daddy Podcast I am talking about woodworking with children and how I get my children interested in woodworking. I’ve tried a few different projects with my three children with varying levels of success. As a stay at home dad the summer holidays means that unless I can in-terest my young three to be involved in the workshop then I don’t get to go in it. I am have found that painting things seems to be of common enjoyment for my 4,6 and 8 year old. The design and build of our hen house has been my most successful woodworking with kids project. They helped me to design, size, saw and finally paint the hen house. I guess I didn’t really mind how it looked in the end, so the final paint job was fun and they loved it! Next woodworking project that my three have done is the design and build of the giant Jenga. This project has involved me using the table saw a fair bit, so no chidren there, but after that it needed a lot of hand sanding and then painting. You will be able to see them doing this in my next video, needles to say they really got stuck in. The lessons I have learned that may be useful to you when trying to woodwork with kids? Do a little preparation before they come into the workshop. Put all the most dangerous tools and chemicals / glues / finishes out of reach. Get them to choose a toolbox and put some small size tools in it, which you are happy with, Nailing smaller, thinner pieces of wood works. Screwing and sawing is a lot more difficult. Sanding and painting is easy and popular with all of my three. Marking our and measuring doesn’t seem to interest them yet. I hope what I have learnt can be of use to you, I’d love to hear your comments, please write your thoughts below. Now go get some wood! Summer Holidays | #8 |

7/23/2015
So it’s the first day of the summer holidays with children and as a stay at home dad, I am dog tired. We’ve decided to make remote control wooden boats, using the bread and butter method. We are going to make a Yacht, a Frigate and a Torpedo boat. Looking after three children for the next six weeks feels pretty daunting, but I have some good things lined up. But for now, get yourself a beer and go get some wood! I am back! | #7|

7/1/2015
Wey hey I am back! After a rather extended break The Wood Daddy Podcast is here a again. After a long break I have come back to the podcast. The roof is now on the workshop and I have started making things again! The first thing is a new assembly table in the style of Norm Abrams, with a stressed skin top and on castors. The second is the table saw, replacing the top and more importantly replace the blade. A new 80 tooth blade has made a lot of difference to cutting cleanly. Finally making a mitred mirror frame from Cedar of Lebanon / Lemon Cedar has been really satisfying and you can see it on the blog and on my Facebook page. Making this has however highlighted the real need for accurate machine setup to get good results. Now go get some wood! | #4-5 | New Workshop Build I am rather excited about building my new workshop!
