7/26/2015
In this episode, the Tomboy Tarts, Persis and Raven get babysitting advice from Singapore's funniest moms Jasmine Han and Shelly Holly. We find out what is like to survive, and not perfect motherhood from these wine loving ladies and how they get away with writing an "explicit" motherhood book. Rated P for Poop! As ex-Shield agents on the run, Tomboy Tarts Persis and Raven are forced to go undercover as security guards at a pool party. The over-enthusiastic Raven wants to issue a Pool Party violation ticket to Jasmine Han & Shelly Holly until Persis realises that they are the authors of "I am not Perfect, I'm a Mom" book. In between getting babysitting advice and being hit by a slime bomb, first-time authors Jasmine & Shelly talk about how they meet and why they write the book. Over copious amounts of champagne, we discuss about about surviving and not perfecting, motherhood, neurotic mums, challenges of writing an "explicit" motherhood book and poop. Lots and lots of poop. Persis decides that she wants to do a truck getaway with the slime bombs and things literally go to the shit from there. How will these Tirade tomboys get out of this stinky mess? Listen and find out on a grossly funny new episode of the show! IN THIS EPISODE, WE TALK ABOUT: 1. GUEST BIOWe find out more about Jasmine Han and Shelly Holly, the two co-authors of the funny and explicit motherhood book, I am not Perfect, I'm a Mom. They share with us how they first met and what motivates them to write this not your typical parenting book. 2. NEWS HIGHLIGHTS - Hollywood's golden couple Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner annouced their divorce after 10 years of marriage and it's freaking everybody out big time. - In Alaska, residents of Fairbanks reported seeing several terrifying foot-long eel-like fish scattered around town. - Twitter explodes after a woman named Sarah O'Connor accidentally tweets ultimate 'Terminator' reference. 3. I'M NOT PERFECT, I 'M A MOM Modern-day parenting is tough but there's a lot of fun to be had in raising kids too. We discuss about about surviving and not perfecting, motherhood, neurotic mums, challenges of writing an "explicit" motherhood book and lots of poop. 4. RAPID FIRE In this rapid fire round of questions with Jasmine and Shelly, we ask them what they will do if they swap bodies with each other. Who are their favourite TV moms? What is the funniest thing their kids have said to them? Find out in this hilarious segment. ABOUT JASMINE HAN Jasmine Han was educated in the US, and is the co-owner of SLAP Dance Studio, where she is a pole dance and striptease instructor. She met her husband in a pub that she used to run, got knocked up, got married, and moved back to her hometown of Singapore, where her family lives. She is a working mom with two kids (and no helper), and wants more kids. Connect with SLAP Dance Studio for the latest updates on classes. ABOUT SHELLY HOLLY Shelly Holly hails from Texas, and she met her husband on Match.com. She recently relocated to Singapore because of her husband’s work, and became an expat mom. She has come to realise that for every culture, there are different ideas as to how children should be raised. She has one kid, no helper, no car, and no paycheque. ABOUT I AM NOT PERFECT, I 'M A MOM Most motherhood books tell you how to be the perfect mom and how to raise the perfect kid. This is not one of those books. This is a collection of light-hearted, true stories about the bizarre experience of pregnancy, attempting to avoid public tantrums, making it through the terrible twos (and ones, threes and fours) and trying not to punch the husband while he is trying to be “helpful”. Jasmine Han & Shelly Holly, both moms with three young kids between them, regale us with their humorous collective experiences about surviving, and not perfecting, motherhood. Tomboy Tirade Episode 48: Agents of G.E.E.K

5/9/2015
"This week's episode is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where Persis and Raven find themselves as agents trying to escape S.H.I.E.L.D headquarters during an attack from some nasty Asgardians, along with Matt and Pete, hosts of the Phantastic Geek podcast, who are also agents secretly working for a sub-section of S.H.I.E.L.D, also known as G.E.E.K. Listen as we talk Agent Carter, Avengers: Age of Ultron and more." The Tomboy Tarts, Raven and Persis once again, find themselves in a precarious adventure, this time with Matt and Pete, hosts of the Phantastic Geek podcast, as S.H.I.E.L.D headquarters are compromised by Hydra to allow for some nasty Asgardians, loyal to Loki to attack. Along the way, Raven and Persis find out that Matt and Pete are also secret agents working for a sub-section of S.H.I.E.L.D, also known as G.E.E.K. and they lead the Tomboy Tarts to a secret underground exit to find a way to escape. As they trudge through dark corridors and tunnels to find an escape, here's what went down this week: 1. GUEST BIO We find out more about how Matt and Pete came together as hosts of The Phantastic Geek podcast and recall their close encounters on the podcast with Ming Na-Wen and Clark Gregg, who play Agents Melinda May and Coulson from the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D TV series. 2. NEWS HIGHLIGHTS - The success of the female Thor series. Apparently, first four Thor female-edition comic books have sold more than any male Thor comic books in 2012, proving that girlpower is more profitable. - there's also a secret Marvel movie about a lesser-known character called Crash Ryan that's in the works right now and we'll wait to see if this relatively unknown Marvel character's film will be able to hold steady at the box-office. - For Incredible Hulk fans who want to see a stand-alone Hulk film, the news is that it could or couldn't happen, only because the comic book character hasn't exactly had the best box-office run in ages and also because Marvel Studios and Universal still have to trudge through gazillion contracts in order to settle rights issues. How long that would take is anyone's guess. Meanwhile, expect to still see Bill Bixby hitchiking his way through episodic adventures on the 70s Incredible Hulk TV series now syndicating on the Syfy Channel. 3. AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D vs AGENT CARTER Then, it's time to clear the air on the Agent Carter vs Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D argument. Who wore their spy better? Peggy Carter or Agent Coulson and his band of merry S.H.I.E.L.D vigilantes? Matt, Pete, Persis and Raven weigh in on the the intricacies of the two TV shows so far. 4. AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON As the Asgardians close in, the Agents of G.E.E.K along with Agents Raven and Persis must find their way to Agent Coulson's bus before it's too late. In these trying moments, they decide to talk about Marvel's latest blockbuster, The Avengers: Age of Ultron. (Not much spoilers really, so you can listen safely) Things then start looking really dismal but Agent Pete finally leads the group to the workshop where 'the Bus' is waiting to pick them up or leave them dangling off a rope? Listen to this exciting Marvel-themed episode to find out. Tomboy Tirade Episode 47: COMIC BOOK SHOP TAKEOVER

5/1/2015
"The comedy duo Persis and Raven, runs a comic shop this week in this comics themed episode of the Tomboy Tirade." It’s a slow sales day, even as the comic book shop is slowly overrun with customers turning up in superhero costumes. But first, the Pawn Star Wannabes have to channel their Kevin Smith and decide if Patrick ‘s zombie baby dolls are a good bargain for the shop. Things never stay quiet for long in the wacky world of Tomboy Tirade. Are those customers your typical cosplayers or do their superhero costumes look too realistic even for fanatic fanboys and fangirls? How did a typical day at a comic book shop explode into a Marvel versus DC superheroes showdown? Here's what went down this episode: 1. NEWS HIGHLIGHTS a) WHERE HAVE ALL THE WHITE ACTORS GONE? - Entertainment news site Deadline came under fire after claiming that white actors were having a hard time getting jobs as shown by all the hiring for TV pilots of "ethnic" actors. Editor Nellie Andreeva appreciates diversity, but “whoa;" she wrote, it was overkill. b) IS ENTHIC CASTING A FAD? - This is following by a half-hearted apology , which excused the intent of the article as to examine if the "uptick of TV pilot casting of people of color" over white actors was just a "fad”. c) NEW WONDERWOMAN COSTUME - Erik Larsen, creator of Savage Dragon and one of the founders of Image Comics, does not like the Wonder Woman costume and took to Twitter to express his opinion. “I’m tired of the big two placating a vocal minority at the expense of the rest of the paying audience by making more practical women outfits." 2. SHE MAKES COMICS - We speak to Producer Patrick Meaney about the making of “She makes comics”, what it is like being on the road to promote it and the audience response to the documentary. She Makes Comics is the first film to bring together the most influential women of the comics world and features interviews Ramona Fradon, Trina Robbins, Joyce Farmer, Karen Berger, Kelly Sue DeConnick, G. Willow Wilson and Gail Simone. 3. QUICK FIRE WITH PATRICK MEANEY - It’s time for our infamous Tirade Quickfire session with Patrick! Is he a superhero or supervillian under the mask? Listen to find out! FIND OUT MORE ABOUT PATRICK MEANEY Patrick wears many hats – he is a writer, producer, director and editor, all rolled into one. This comics lover is the filmmaker behind the documentaries featuring Grant Morrison, Warren Ellis, Neil Gaiman and Triphouse. He currently writes Last Born for Black Mask Studios and one of the co-producers for his documentary “She Makes Comics”. Check out his site at http://www.patrickmeaney.com/ and follow him on twitter @patrickmeaney WATCH SHE MAKES COMICS DOCUMENTARY She Makes Comics traces the fascinating history of women in the comics industry. Tomboy Tirade Episode 45: Fifty Shades of Singapore

4/3/2015
Feathers are ruffled as the Tirade tomboys serve up a comedic roast of wacky proportions! Persis and Raven are waiting their turn at a local comedy roast. Unfortunately they are up against the wildly popular comedic duo of Crispy the Talking Cock and Cindy his human sidekick from Singapore. The Tirade tomboys need to get rid of their competition. But now? They decide they first have to know their enemy by "warming up their dinner", so to speak. Crispy the Talking Cock and Cindy have a daring new show coming up in April, Singapore Stripped, where they strip away Singapore’s artificial, shiny façade to reveal its comical dark side. Our first news highlights was Vladimir (Voldermot) Putin, who refused to comment on why he suddenly disappeared for 10 days, where he canceled a trip to Kazakhstan, shelved a treaty signing with South Ossetia and skipped out on a meeting of top officials from Russia's domestic intelligence service, the FSB. Naturally the internet went into overdrive, including on Tirade, which involves tanks, Borat and Vodka. Jeremy Clarkson was fired from BBC and landed straight into comedic roast pit. Is BBC killing its golden goose? Why are grumpy old men like Clarkson so popular in UK? What does BBC really stand for? How does an assault becomes a "fracas" when Jeremy punches his producer? On Aug 9, Singapore is planning a big birthday to mark its 50th anniversary of independence. Now 7 August has just been declared as public day so that half of Singapore can cross over to Johor to annoy our neighbours. What is the national bird of Singapore and why does Crispy bear a grudge against Malaysia? We get a sneak peak at Crispy and Cindy's new show as they roast one by one, Singapore 's top tourist spots such as Marina Bay Sands, The Singapore Zoo and Orchard Road. Fries and soda not included. Then it is time for Crispy and Cindy to go on stage and they killed it. Threatened, Persis and Raven decide to take drastic action and create their own "fracas". How are they going to get out of this mess? Will they be burnt to a crisp? Stay tuned for a crispy new episode of Tirade, ruffling your feathers 2 April on iTunes, Stitcher and Libsyn! Tomboy Tirade Episode 44: The Asian Insurgents

3/17/2015
The Asian Insurgents are coming as the Divergent sequel, based off on the Veronica Roth books, hits theatres this week! The Tomboy Tarts, Raven and Persis once again, find themselves on the run. This time they are factionless, fleeing out of dystopian Chicago on a train. They bump into the Disoriented Comedy faction members, Jenny Yang and Atsuko Okatsuka, who are also on the run and looking to escape a city at war. Jenny and Atsuko share their story on how Disoriented Comedy came about and how they forged a pretty cool comedic partnership and their upcoming nation-wide tour with the rest of the Disoriented troopers. Then we talk about the Asian American comedy revolution in the USA – why Fresh off the Boat, an autobiographical new comedy series based loosely off of chef Eddie Huang’s life, has changed the game and reaction sentiments to the show. Then it’s time to take Jenny Yang’s best-loved Buzzfeed video series on YouTube ‘Ask an Asian’ and place our guests on the spot (with spicy sauce of course). Watch the video below! Nobody wins except the newly formed Asian Insurgents as Jenny, Atsuko, Raven and Persis take a final stab at escaping. Will they succeed? You’ll just have to listen to find out! Disoriented Comedy is the first-ever nationally-touring stand-up comedy showcase that features the fresh and diverse voices of Asian American female-identified comics and the diverse friends who love us. In cities throughout the country, Diso¬riented Comedy creates a unique lineup of nationally-touring talent with local, up-and-coming Asian American female comics. While the tour's focus is on showcasing Asian American female comics, Disoriented Comedy's productions feature unique comics of diverse race, sexuality and gender not often seen on mainstream comedy club stages. Seeking a suppo¬rtive network of comed¬ians, and a desire to build audiences and community, Los Angeles-raised Atsuko Okatsuka and Jenny Yang and Seattle-based founding co-producer Yola Lu created “Dis¬oriented Comedy.” This first-of-its-kind comedy show debuted in Summer 2012 to a sold-out audience of nearly three hundred comedy lovers in the historic David Henry Hwang Theater in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles. The sold-out tour has taken the fresh voices of Asian American female comics to colleges and universities such as Wellesley College, Pomona College and Loyola Marymount University, and standing-room only shows in Seattle, Washington, San Francisco, California, and the Westside Comedy Theater in Santa Monica, California. The troupe are now holding a show March 26, called the Family Reunion so if you're in LA, go check the show out. Tickets are priced at USD$10 plus service fee. We were told you'd need to hold your pee in a bottle. :) More details below. You can connect with Jenny and Atsuko on the Disoriented Comedy Facebook page and on Twitter. Tomboy Tirade Episode 43: Adventures in Archaeology

2/27/2015
"This week, Persis and Raven embark on an Indiana Jones style of adventure of their own. Joining their quest for a 2500-year old missing lamp is travel blogger writer, and history geek, Candice Walsh. But the stakes are high, as they are not the only ones coveting the precious artifact. Can the zany trio survive Soviet spies, time travel and nasty bugs in this zany new episode of Tomboy Tirade?" The tomboys are in Greece but a beach holiday is far from their minds. With help of an ancient map that Persis had conveniently “borrowed” from the Metropolitan library, they are on hot a trail to unearth a mystery lamp. While excavating a top secret site, they run into Candice Walsh from Newfoundlands, Canada who is living the dream and the travel blogger behind the “Candice Does the World”. She offers to help with the digging that makes Raven very happy. Persis remains skeptical of her motive. The year has just started but many avid travelers have already looked ahead and planned ahead for their vacations. For those who can’t make up their minds, there is the Lonely Planet ‘s list for the top 10 countries to visit in 2015. Singapore tops the list, which is a big surprise for Raven. Candice did not have high hopes for Bosnia and Herzegovina, which she only visited because she won the trip to in a lucky draw but it turns to be unspoiled paradise and now she wanted to visit the neighbouring Serbia. Persis is attracted to Ireland and Candice talks about her experience about going there to find her roots, which involves seaweed baths, drunken Riverdance and 10 days of epic fun in the surfing town of Silgo. The discussion turns to Airbnb that has run into trouble with a few countries lately. Candice is a big fan of the service, having gotten some really good deals including a stay on a Greek island and opportunities to interact with the locals. The tomboys want to hear about Candice travel adventures last year where she spent the first half of the year in Europe. From New York, she flew to Greece and traveled to Turkey, Croatia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina before rounding the year off with a Caribbean cruise. Candice discusses her first overseas trip, why she is passionate about ancient Greece history, her relocation plans to Berlin later in 2015 and shares her experiences working on in vineyard and olive farm in Greece. Behind the glamour, traveling for a living is a lot of hard work. How do you sustain yourself while traveling or make your dream trip without breaking the bank? The trio discusses travel hacks, managing your budgets, online resources, how to get the best deals, Aktarer Zaman who is sued for sharing cheap flight loopholes, nomadic Matt and his new book, “Travel the world on $50 per day” and how people can get “high” from traveling. Then it is fun part, the Rapidfire section with Candice where we find out about her “spacious” experience in Amsterdam, most memorable food experience, dream vacation spot and whether she would get a second travel tattoo. After all the tedious digging, the trio uncovers and locates the missing lamp! But alas, as it always does here on Tomboy Teee-rahd, things took a complicated and disastrous turn as the Soviet army strikes and Raven decides to take matter into her own hands. So what happens in the end? Well you’ve got to listen to find out, right? About Candice Walsh Candice Walsh is a redheaded Newfoundlander who travels and writes and the brains behind the popular travel blog Candice Does the World. Her travels have taken her around Canada and the world with stopovers in Greece, South America, Iceland, Ireland, South Africa, Jamica, Jordan, to Turkey, Croatia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina and the a Caribbean. You can connect with Candice on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Or sign up for her mailing list. Go on, say hi, ask her about traveling, tell her she is beautiful or all three :) Of course, while you're doing that, don’t forget to check us out, the Tomboy Tarts! Here’s our...

Tomboy Tirade Episode 42: The Oscar Odyssey Awards

2/12/2015
In this tyre-screeching 42nd episode of Tomboy Tirade, the Tomboy Tarts, Persis and Raven, are planning to illegally gate-crash the Oscar Odyssey Awards, a cheaper, China-made version of the Academy Awards, with their friends and accomplices from Canberra, Australia, the Silver Screen Queens, Katie Malloy and Melissa Savage. Persis and Raven travel in style in Ellen Degeneres’ limo to the awards venue. Along the way, Persis reveals that Ellen Degeneres’ limo is packed full of surprises, from a built-in toilet to a mobile vet clinic run by every animal’s favourite doc, Dr Doolittle who lives in one of the limo’s glove boxes. As the Tomboy Tarts approach the awards venue, paparazzi are gathering all over the place but thanks to their crazy limo driver, Nitro’s stunt-driving skills, the girls manage to evade them. Not surprisingly, Raven gets car sick and pukes all over the place, just as they discover that the Silver Screen Queens were already at the awards, trying to sneak in, quite unsuccessfully backstage and are now on the run from security. Nitro screeches off and manages to eventually drop the girls off at a quieter part of the awards venue parking lot at Backstage D before unexpectedly getting into a hit and run with Nightcrawler, Jake Gyllenhall and an angry cat. To avoid being caught, they escape, unseen backstage where they shred the month’s Oscar news and controversies from the surprisingly lack of diversity in this year’s Academy Awards to the increasing Americanisation of the awards resulting in the dearth of appreciation of films from the UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada and Asia in the main categories of awards. After that, Persis trawls the backstage corridors to get an interview with Sanif Olek, whose film ‘Sayang Disayang’ was Singapore’s official Foreign Film entry in this year’s Academy Awards. Sanif reveals how the film was made, his challenges while making it and the inspiration behind the film. After that, it’s time for Persis to rejoin Raven, Melissa and Kate at the awards show as they review some of the nominees in the main categories of the awards this year before it all goes to pots when Dr Doolittle, who escapes his glove-box veterinary clinic and takes over the wheels of Nitro’s limo, gatecrashes the awards show, while accepting his award. Who crashes and burns during this star-studded ceremony? Well, you’ll have to tune in and find out, won’t you? IN A NUTSHELL: Tomboy Tirade Ep 42: The Oscar Odyssey Awards f.
