The High Court has rejected claims alcohol restrictions in Queensland Aboriginal communities breach racial discrimination laws. The Queensland Government has welcomed it, despite proceeding with its plans to water down alcohol restrictions anyway.

The South African Government is warning that drug abuse could pose an even bigger threat to its young people than the HIV/AIDS pandemic. It says drug use has increased by 600 per cent in the last decade. Drug dealers are using AIDS drugs and rat poison to make highly addictive narcotics.

Four US soldiers were killed at Bagram Airbase near Kabul, just hours after the White House announced that it would begin formal talks with the Taliban. Ron Neumann was the US ambassador to Afghanistan from 2005 to 2007. He told The World Today he's not expecting to see major changes on the ground.

The United States and the Afghan government will sit face to face with the Taliban holding direct peace talks, in an attempt to find a political solution to the war in Afghanistan. But just hours after the White House announced it would begin formal talks, four US soldiers were killed at Bagram Airbase near Kabul.

The US agribusiness giant Archer Daniels Midland has been forced to confront a history of alleged price fixing and market-rigging as its seeks to win regulatory approval for its controversial takeover of GrainCorp. ADM has encountered intense questioning from a senate estimates committee amid concerns that the $3 billion deal would put a foreign stranglehold on grain storage and infrastructure.

Expert says parole not appropriate for dangerous repeat...
Adrian Bayley has been sentenced to life with a minimum of 35 years for the rape and murder of Melbourne ABC employee Jill Meagher. The prosecution had argued for life without parole but Supreme Court Judge Geoffrey Nettle said Bayley's guilty plea and the fact he had showed a small amount of remorse were factors in his decision to grant a non parole period.

Pesticide regulations failing to protect river...
Researchers have found that the biodiversity of aquatic life is up to 42 per cent worse in rivers contaminated with pesticides, compared to less polluted waterways. They say it shows regulation of pesticides is failing, and the way pesticides are registered and managed should be reviewed.
