Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #16 (1991) We’ve got some Batman back in our lives as we jump into the “Venom” storyline that ran in issues of BATMAN: LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT in 1991. Venom, of course, being the drug that Bane uses t get swoll and also some guy who Spider-Man knows. Lots to unpack here as Bruce ask for permission to save a drowning girl in the sewer. It goes tragically fubar and Bats is convinced he needs more gains. It is just his luck that the dead girl’s apathetic father (like, REALLY apathetic) is in the designer drug business. The Savage Dragon [vol 1] #3 (1992) We complete our run on the Savage Dragon mini-series this week as Dragon returns from a six-day nap to brawl with Bedrock, Youngblood’s answer to Ben Grimm or Blok from Legion of Super-Heroes. Chicago is in even WORSE shape since Dragon’s been out as Skullface and the poorly dressed Overlord make threatening phone calls and have disastrous Zoom meetings. Plus, the aforementioned Bedrock wants to see if Dragon is government material in the most obnoxiously destructive way possible. All this plus bodacious babes with bodacious trauma! The Savage Dragon [vol 1] #2 (1992) Carrying on with the saga of The Savage Dragon, we pick up the Dragon in the Chicago sewers looking for an obese spider man (as opposed to Spider-Man or Spider-Ham). Dragon’s been running ragged fighting crime and almost gets some companionship from his Daisy Dukes wearing neighbor gal. Unfortunately, Hellrazor and his cronies have taken over the mall, sat on ALL the chairs in the Brookstone and finished off the entirety of the bourbon chicken in the food court, leaving the Windy City paralyzed with fear. The Savage Dragon [vol 1] #1 (1992) We don’t get around to messing with too many Image Comics but Savage Dragon is a great place to start. Outlandish in story and execution, the mighty Erik Larsen gives us a lot to talk about. For example, why does Savage Dragon have so much body hair despite being a reptilian? Is he of Mediterranean descent? Will the hair removal product Nair do the trick? Regardless, this series is wild, filled with chrome skeletons, hilariously timed explosion deaths and one of the most inefficient costume designs of all time. Marvel Team-Up #125 (1982) Spider-Man, ever the enterprising fellow, nabs a print endorsement deal for a fast food joint only for Tigra to show up and score the gig with her Charo impression (cuchi cuchi). Tigra then has a date with a beat cop that gets interrupted by Zabo the Diaper Bodyguard. Spider-Man tries to help and makes things worse. Additionally, we are bestowed a Doctor Strange / Scarlet Witch back-up that sees a confused monster summoned on the set of that fake movie in PET CEMETARY 2 where Eddie Furlong’s mother get electrocuted to death. Marvel Team-Up #126 (1983) We wrap our run on Marvel Team-Up with a deliberately lazy issue featuring a random back-up story with Luke Cage and Hellstorm and a Spider-Man comic strip reprint featuring the Hulk In the first story, Luke and Damian find a dead body and follow the brimstone trail to a demon worshipping party for Satannish aka Kirkland Signature Satan. Action ensues as Luke throws a couch and Hellstorm sets his trident to “ash.” Later, Hulk loses his marbles in NYC and awesomely demolishes a police cruiser with a lamppost. Spider-Man gives Hulk $5.00 USD to start a new life so Hulk heads to Chicago and pays it forward by slapping around some buff crooks. The good professor here is mad that another professor (Professor X) did a botch job on his catatonic son’s mind so now he wants to take it out on everything X-Men adjacent. Justice League of America #175 (1980) Join Shawn and Jen as we follow up on last week’s JLA book with a pointless tale about everyone’s favorite super-powered Eeyore, Red Tornado! You see, Reddy got sad over something again and impulsively quit the League to resume his normal life as a Yul Brenner lookalike in NYC. He assembles an instant family in the span of 20 minutes and goes to a Halloween parade in February where he is attacked by Doctor Destiny and his “bad dream machine” that only makes you see giant bugs. We also question the potentially lewd placement of Justice League cameras throughout NYC. Naturally, we blame Clark. The Flash #266 (1978) We tackle The Flash in this week’s episode as Barry faces the challenge of a 100% fully functioning Heat Wave. Heat Man here has to overcome his fear of the cold by having his insane therapist throw buckets of ice at him. This plan to defeat The Flash comes to include the desecration of a frozen corpse and the permanent maiming of house servants via furious body shaking. Thankfully, Barry is a maniac so he obliges. There’s also a Kid Flash back-up where Wally loses his speed powers to a desperate thief only to get electrocute said thief and get his powers back. Wally also may end up having some nooner. Marvel Team-Up #113 (1982) This week, we start off 2022 with Spider-Man and Quasar having a contentious team-up to defeat the ghost of the Lightmaster. Spidey get his sense working and skips out on graduate class yet again, raising the concern of his wanton disregard for educational funding. Also, Quasar walks around with business cards like he’s Patrick Bateman and conjures up phallic drilling objects to impress college co-eds. Adventure Comics #450 (1977) In our last book of the year, we take a look at something from Aquaman’s ADVENTURE COMICS run where a crippling tragedy DIDN’T happen. Here, Arthur takes on the Weather Wizard, who has stolen a secret government sex toy that will help him defeat The Flash. A bunch of nonsense happens in the Bermuda Triangle and we ultimately conclude that an octopus makes a terrible babysitter. We also have a short back-up story with Martian Manhunter avenging the death of his muppet friend. Apparently, the murderer was an Earth human and J’onn runs afoul of Supergirl, who fights him off in various sexy poses. This is a surprisingly erotic book. Marvel Holiday Special (1991) Happy holidays everyone! In the spirit of the season, we are taking a look at Marvel’s — apparently — first-ever holiday special. It’s a collection of short, relatively wholesome stories but there’s some insanity in here as well. Like Santa being a mutant. Or Captain America finding out Bucky has an estranged sister. Or the Blob having a fetish for department store mannequins. Bet you didn’t see that one coming. Metal Men [vol 2] #1 (1993) After a period of semi-obscurity, the Metal Men are BACK with a new mini-series that was certainly intended to bring about a new ongoing but ultimately didn’t. Probably had to do with Doc Magnus’s new grumpy 90s attitude and affinity for big modern laser guns. But hey, at least the United States got to make Australia jealous by housing a meteor AND playing host to Superman’s death. WE’RE NUMBER ONE! Avengers #144 (1976) Sending good vibes to mighty George Perez as we discuss one of his Avengers books from the 70s. Here, the Avengers and Patsy Walker are farting around in Roxxon/Brand, jumping on missiles and what not. Cap and Iron Man come across The Cat costume just hanging out and are like, “hey Patsy - wear this.” Patsy then unleashes a mighty stream of shinfo before agreeing to becoming Hellcat. Batman #389 (1985) Batman’s dealing with a bunch of crises as not only is the world falling apart with its red skies and infinite earths but Catwoman’s back in town and she might be killing dudes with shoes. Ever so graceful with the ladies, Batman basically negs Catwoman and leaves her crying but not before showing her a stalactite (stalagmite?) that looks like a cat. Doc Samson #1 (1996) Doc Samson is Hulk’s psychiatrist buddy who seemingly only has clients that have green hair. He travels to NYC to help figure out a gamma-radiated serial killer while simultaneously costing the city thousands in tax dollars spent on airfare. Teen Titans #46 (1977) Just a heads up — there are significant ETERNALS movie spoilers in the first half of the show. The Teen Titans are tasked with figuring out the Fiddler in this issue, who may have inspired Charlie Daniels to write “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.” Fiddler’s here messing with a concert for the youths, unleashing bees and rats everywhere. To help with the case, the Titans bring on the Joker’s Daughter for a trial period because she has lip-shooting projectiles and knows funny bone MMA as well as Mal Duncan and his gimmicked shofar. Eternals [vol 5] #1 (2021) So this is a pretty big deal, not because there’s an ETERNALS movie coming out this week but its probably the first time in SEVEN YEARS of this podcast that Shawn has taken notes on the comic he’s reading fo the show. Its called growth. Anyhow, the Eternals are a race of super-powered guys and gals put on Earth by mad space scientists and left alone with malevolent Mogwais for…reasons?!? Iron Man shows up to get Sersi’s number and Zuras the Prime Eternal gets Iron Clawed to death, presumably by Kevin Von Erich since he’s the only one of them still alive.
