From Lagos, Nigeria comes Atanda with an excellent release called Son of the Soil, and more from the young afrobeat band Lagos Thugs. From Ghana, percussionists Afla Sackey with his band Afrik Bawantu, K.O.G. (Kweku of Ghana) with new release called Don’t Take my Soul, and more from Ghana’s 80s electronic highlife with a belter from the Starlite band. From France/Morocco comes rock blazers Bab L’ Bluz, and from Ethiopia a live delivery from Qwanqwa who are a favourite of mine. Congolese singer Rébecca M'Boungou’s Kolinga delivers the Ireke remix of Mateya Disco, and from Tanzania’s Hukwe Zawose dynasty come The Zawose Queens with their new track Mapendo.

Orchestra Baobab release a second new single from their upcoming album due later in the year, and a revisit to an earlier release from another Senegalese band here featuring Congolese vocalist Koffi Olomide. A brand new latin release from UK band Orchestra Mambo International and a dance floor firestormer of a track from ATA records. A touch of Candomble from Léo Leobons, some early juju from Ebenezer Obey, Togolese soul from Alognon Degbevi & Les vétérans jazz, and Kolinga release another new remix based on a track from Congo star Samba Mapangala, a spiritual South African piano track from the master Nduduzo Makhathini, more from Milton Gulli, and a new release from UK based Ghanaian percussionist Afla Sackey & Afrik Bawantu.

The beautiful voice of Aziza Brahim originally from Western Sahara and now based in Spain, and South Africa’s Pilani Bubu delivering guidance on rediscovering culture and identity. Also form South Africa comes guitarist Derek Gripper and Kora master Ballaké Sissoko. Kamale Ngoni player Aboubakar Traoré from Nurkina Faso powers up the rhythm with his band Balima, and 2 tracks from a new compilation of 60s Congolese singles on Covadia. We finish with a very funky Ebenezer Obey and his Inter-reformers Band from Nigeria in Juju style.

Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca tours the UK and comes to Brighton Festival on 26 May, while stunning new releases with salsa at its heart from Orchestra Mambo International and New Regency Orchestra. Spanish afrobeat band Mampon, and Belgian Kolonel Djafaar with a touch of EthioJazz bring new directions and a reminder of the great EthioJazz master Mulatu Astatqe. Do you recall Congolese singer Samba Mapangala? Well he returns with US band Occidental Brothers International with an inspired recent release. The Paris based label Hot Casa release Volume 2 of Togo Soul, and Philophon provides the sweet tones of Ghanaian songstress Florence Adooni with a new Kumasi based 8 strong band.
