Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca tours the UK and comes to Brighton Festival on 26 May, while stunning new releases with salsa at its heart from Orchestra Mambo International and New Regency Orchestra. Spanish afrobeat band Mampon, and Belgian Kolonel Djafaar with a touch of EthioJazz bring new directions and a reminder of the great EthioJazz master Mulatu Astatqe. Do you recall Congolese singer Samba Mapangala? Well he returns with US band Occidental Brothers International with an inspired recent release. The Paris based label Hot Casa release Volume 2 of Togo Soul, and Philophon provides the sweet tones of Ghanaian songstress Florence Adooni with a new Kumasi based 8 strong band.

This week is devoted to Orchestra Baobab, a long standing band formed back in 1970 in Dakar playing Senegalese Afro-Cuban music and still going strong over 50 years later, all be it with new members. They come to the Brighton Festival on May 7th at the Dome and likely musicians are Yahya Fall - guitar (who had been on the Dakar scene in the early years); Alpha Dieng (son of original vocalist Ndiouga Dieng) – vocals; René “Bolero” Sowarche - Guitare Solo (replaces original guitarist Barthelemy Atisso); Wilfrid Zinsou and Thierno Koité - tenor & alto saxes; Zacharia Koité - vocals, congas; Mamadou Mountaga Koité - drums, timbales; Moussa Sissokho – congas; Elhadji Malick Sy – bass.
