171: Kit-of-Parts Design | BAHA Hybrid Office

4/17/2026
In this episode, Cherise is joined by Paul Cooper, AIA, LEED AP, DBIA, Principal, and Amy Stock, NCIDQ, LEED GA, Associate – both at TEF Design in San Francisco, California. They discuss the Bay Area Headquarters Authority (or BAHA) Work Adaptation, also in San Francisco. You can see the project here as you listen along. Following the initial workplace build-out of the Bay Area Metro Center, the BAHA Hybrid Office represents a continued investment in adaptability—an evolution shaped by changing work patterns rather than a fixed end state. Through workshops and stakeholder engagement, TEF gathered insight into daily workflows, uncovering opportunities to better align the environment with how people actually use it. This collaborative process informed the development of a “Kit of Parts”—a flexible system of spatial strategies that could be deployed, rearranged, or expanded over time. 167: Glass Courtyard | Stealth House

3/20/2026
In this episode, Cherise is joined by Scott Specht, Founding Partner at Specht Novak Architects in Austin, Texas, who previously joined us in 2023 to discuss the New American House. Stealth House, also in Austin, Texas. You can see the project here as you listen along. Tucked along a gravel alley behind a row of traditional homes in downtown Austin, the Stealth House by Scott Specht of Specht Novak Architects is deliberately elusive. From the street, the 1,100-square-foot residence reveals almost nothing: a low, rust-colored steel façade, punctuated by the absence of outward-facing windows. Crossing the threshold reveals a radically different spatial experience. Sunlight pours through floor-to-ceiling glass that frames two verdant interior courtyards. Rather than opening outward toward the street, the house turns inward, creating a private landscape that mediates between architecture and nature. 166: Triple-Friction-Pendulum Base Isolation System | Oregon Supreme Court

3/13/2026
In this episode, Cherise is joined by Andrew Smith, AIA, APT RP, Principal and Historical Architect at Hennebery Eddy Architects in Portland, Oregon. They discuss the Oregon Supreme Court Interior Modernization and Seismic Retrofit in Salem, Oregon. You can see the project here as you listen along. The rehabilitation of the Oregon Supreme Court Building stands as a model for how historic preservation and forward-looking resilience can coexist within a single architectural vision. A triple-friction-pendulum base isolation system was inserted beneath the building, effectively decoupling the superstructure from ground motion. This move transforms the foundation into a dynamic interface: in a Cascadia Subduction Zone event, the ground may oscillate laterally up to two feet while the building above remains comparatively stable. 165: Inside-Out Design | Fifth & Tillery

3/6/2026
In this episode, Cherise is joined by Travis Albrecht, Studio Director and Principal, and Michael Waddell, Senior Associate and Design Director at Gensler in their Austin, Texas office. They discuss the Fifth and Tillery office building in Austin. You can see the project here as you listen along. At the seam between East Austin’s quiet neighborhoods and the grit of its industrial past, Fifth + Tillery begins with an act of restraint. Instead of expanding outward, the project turns inward—reclaiming a neglected warehouse and reimagining its bones as a porous, living campus for work and community. The result is not a new monument, but a renewed place: a building that remembers where it came from while pointing toward what cities can become. 162: Accessible & Inclusive Design | The DOT Experience

2/13/2026
In this episode, Cherise is joined by Jo Haas, VP of Advancement and the DOT Experience, and Chris Carmicle of PLC Management. They discuss the DOT Experience in Louisville, Kentucky. You can see the project here as you listen along. Scheduled to open in 2026, the DOT Experience represents a fundamental rethinking of what a museum can be—and who it is for. Conceived as a destination rather than a conventional exhibition space, the project merges the qualities of an attraction, a factory tour, and an educational center into a single, immersive environment. At its core is a clear mission: to change perceptions of blindness, to invite visitors to act in their own ways to make the world more welcoming, and to serve as a global model for inclusivity. They discuss the Rolex Pavilion in Venice, Italy. You can see the project here as you listen along. Conceived as both an architectural gesture and a cultural offering, the 2025 Rolex Pavilion stands as an ode to sustainability, to Venice, and to the city’s enduring relationship with the art of making. Two-hundred-year-old timber beams salvaged from Venetian palazzi are reimagined as the pavilion’s walls, while locally crafted Venetian glass is formed into circular discs that compose the ceiling above. 12/12/2025
In this episode, Cherise is joined by Mike McCormick, Vice President of Facilities Management and Development at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, David Hart, President and CEO of Steinberg Hart, and Roger Krulak, Founder and President of FullStack Modular. They discuss the Student Housing Program at CalPoly located in San Luis Obispo, CA. You can see the project here as you listen along. California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo is confronting a challenge shared by many growing institutions in California: a rapidly rising student population paired with an increasingly constrained local housing market. Nestled in a highly desirable coastal town, the university has limited ability to expand enrollment without adding thousands of new beds on campus—an imperative driven not just by institutional goals, but by the simple fact that the surrounding city cannot absorb additional demand. In response, Cal Poly has launched one of the most ambitious student housing initiatives in the state, a program that will deliver 4,200 new beds through a landmark collaboration with FullStack Modular. The effort aims to redefine how campus housing is designed and built, relying on an industrialized construction strategy that promises speed, quality, and long-term affordability.
