What’s News: Self-harm a growing problem amongst teens
4/1/2023
Self-harm, the act of deliberately inflicting pain and damage to one's body by means of cutting, burning, scratching, and self-poisoning through medication or substances in order to relieve emotional distress, is a growing concern amongst teenagers.
A 2021 UNICEF report found that more than 65% of South African young people have had some form of mental health issue but did not seek help. More than a quarter of respondents did not think their mental health problem was serious enough to seek support, while 20 percent did not know where to access help and 18 percent were afraid of what people would think.
For more on this and how we can go about dealing with it as a society, the team was joined by Dr Terri Henderson - Member of the South African Society of Psychiatrists

What’s News: S.A consumers warned of possible debt spiral
3/29/2023
Three years after our initial Covid-19 lockdown and while the virus has seemingly become a thing of the past, the debt pandemic which it seems to have created continues on as S.A consumers are warned of getting into a debt spiral.
According to the latest Eighty20/XDS Credit Stress Report the fourth quarter of 2022 showed an increase in appetite for credit among South Africans, with more than 800,000
new entrants into the credit market over that period, at the same time though the number of people in default on their repayments also increased.
Research from National Debt Advisors showed that between March and December 2020, 80% of the finances in South African households were negatively impacted as a result of lockdown, job losses and a subsequent interruption of income, which led many to running towards credit.
For more on this the team spoke to National Debt Advisors CEO Charnell Collins.

What’s News: Pretoria the capital of peak hour traffic in the country
3/29/2023
The capital city Pretoria has the worst traffic in the country during peak hours, this is according to the latest data from the TomTom Traffic Index which ranks traffic congestion of multiple cities across the world.
According to the index, rush hour traffic numbers are on the increase, however, are still well below 2019 numbers.
Pretoria came in first with commuters there spending the equivalent of 6 days per year in traffic, that number is 5 days a year for Cape Town which came in second. Surprisingly, the country’s economic hub Johannesburg has improved and is now number 5 in terms of peak hour traffic congestion in the country, with East London and Bloemfontein both registering worse peak hour traffic than Johannesburg.
The index puts the UK, India, Ireland, Japan, and Italy as the worst places in the world to drive during rush hour peak traffic. For more on this, the team caught up with our very own Rob Byrne.

What’s News: Human Rights and Early Childhood Development
3/22/2023
As we observe Human Rights Day in the country today, The Santa Shoebox Programmes, which focuses on uplifting underprivileged children, is calling for the government to uphold children’s basic human rights to education, adequate nutrition, sanitation and quality care.
The Government's Early Childhood Development Subsidy, which was created to address this very issue, has made some progress with an increased budget and deregulation to allow more organisations to have access to the fund.
However experts say more needs to be done as the current allocated budget won’t be enough to empower and uplift underprivileged children, in 2022 the subsidy amounted to R17 per child per day.
For more on this the team was joined by Deb Zelezniak, CEO of the Santa Shoebox Programmes
