The book takes the reader on a journey through the history of blindness in Western Culture to discover that blindness is not so dark after all. The two women writers discuss writing and life and women’s issues and the disability spectrum. Selina Mills is an award-winning writer and broadcaster who is legally blind. Educated in the USA and the UK, Selina has worked as a senior reporter and broadcaster for Reuters, The Daily Telegraph, and the BBC. In 2019, she was awarded the Royal Society of Literature Jerwood Prize for first time non-fiction writers. Her historical memoir, Life Unseen: A Story of Blindness, uses historical research over the ages to explain how we interpret blindness in the 21st century. Eurydice Eve speaks with Sarah Gerard, the author of CARRIE CAROLYN COCO as well as Sunshine State, the novella Binary Star, and the novel True Love. The Carolyn Bush true crime story is the modern face of femicide : a young woman doesn’t need to be married or romantically linked to be murdered by her domestic live-in. Before she was brutally stabbed to death by her roommate in 2016, Carolyn Bush was a 25 year old poet and a founding member of the nonprofit reading group Wendy’s Subway in New York City. She believed in astrology & studied at Bard College student, as did her killer, Render Stetson-Shanahan. She was a friend to many, including Sarah who gathered her text messages, emails, blog posts, poems, essays, social media, marginalia and interviewed many of her loved ones recollections of her for this book. Render Stetson-Shanahan admitted to getting drunk and “smoking weed” with his brother before the incident. He also admitted that Bush was speaking on the phone when he asked her, “Guess what?” before he began stabbing her to death. “It was a horribly disturbing case,” said Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz. “The knife sliced into her back and neck, puncturing her heart, lungs and a major artery.” The murderer, Render Stetson-Shanahan, 29, avoided second degree murder charges in Carolyn Bush’s brutal murder in the Ridgewood apartment they shared, because his defense attorney Zachary Margulis-Ohnuma painted a picture of Stetson-Shanahan as a “kind and gentle” man, who “went crazy” the night he killed Bush because of a “marijuana induced hysteria” or psychotic break. The gruesome story made national headlines because the killer is the son of New Yorker cartoonist Danny Shanahan and of Janet Stetson, the Director of Graduate Admissions at Bard College. Queens prosecutors said Stetson-Shanahan was aware of his actions the night of the stabbing assault but Supreme Court Justice Richard Buchter rendered a verdict of guilty of manslaughter in the second degree. The verdict carries a five to fifteen year sentence which means that Stetson-Shanahan could be let free for time already served with good behavior. Eve Eurydice speaks with Kevin Walton What is a man? Is man the provider for others? Is man the guardian of the container? We humans are designed to live in a comprehensive system, but we now live self-fragmented, bombarded by contradictory messages. Men are conditioned to self deny in other to be “good.” We discuss the crisis in manhood after the collapse of patriarchy and ways to restore healthy male presence. We all live in misalignment. Modern men are particularly disconnected from their behavioral models and need to find their authentic embodiment. We are in a time of transition. Kevin lists his four rites of passage for healthy masculinity: the masculine principle of energy, the feminine principle of energy, healthy male embodiment and lighthood held in the heart space. We discuss Sacred Sons, Uncivilized Man, and other groups in the growing international movement of men getting together with other men and making “contact” and building brotherhood by accessing the embodied experiences that our ancestors spent their lives enjoying. This is a big wake up call for men. Their contribution must not be at the cost of their truth and fullness. Selfishness and selflessness are both misalignment. Men need to disconnect from the generational wealth imperative. We cannot be equal as long as only men pay. We have devolved into zombie patriarchy’s re-enactments like sugar baby culture etc. We must revisit our relational dynamics. Presence takes two. We are all in this together. We can support one another. We can find conscious accountability. We can rediscover the harmony of masculine and feminine. We can stop chasing the individual advantage at the cost of the collective. Eurydice Eve speaks with Alexis Masciarella about the ethics of robots, the future of love, and the dangers of legal adoption. We discuss the Ethics of Sex with Machines and Escapism from Reality. With Europe's first sex robot brothel open in Barcelona and the first talking sex robot, "Harmony", available, we discuss the Pornification and Dehumanization of Sexuality, and the implications of Human Connection to Robots when Robots are introduced as substitutes for humans. We humans connect with inanimate objects by imagining them animate. “The caregiver effect”: when we nurture a machine that presents itself as a dependent, we get emotionally attached to it. Human Sclerosis is an emotional hardening toward actual people. We may become more callous towards human suffering by ‘practising’ on mock humans. We may strengthen our darker desires by indulging them in virtual settings. Sex Robots desensitize people. Robot-makers present them as therapeutic tools that limit real world harm. But they name and humanize them. This violates Respect for humanity. Robots that are designed to please men make it harder for men to have sex with real women. Child sex robots are defined as robots designed to look and act like a child. The law views child sex robots as sex toys. Roboticists claim that child sex robots can cure pedophilia. But is it either or? Either rape human or rape machine? And might they be manufacturing perverts for profit? Most users buy sex toys out of curiosity. Toys change a person’s understanding of what sex is. What if a robot gives a person a taste of pedophilia he might never know he had? What if he experiments with a robot and likes it and becomes only attracted to minors? Is there a symbolic harm being done to society? What’s the difference between computer generated child porn and child sex robots? We have no restrictions on the importation of child sex dolls into the US. There is no legal rule that bans their purchase and sale in the interests of child protection. It is unclear whether they offer any positive interventions for treating people with paedophilic predilections. The risk of harm for children may increase, if people who use child robots for sex become encouraged to try real children for sex. The child robots could be a gateway drug, in consequentialist reasoning. They could lead to or encourage offences against children in the real world. What should the legal system do about these devices? It permits them on the grounds that, unlike child pornography, the child sex robot or doll does not involve any direct harm to children. A mild legal moralism may be due. Moralistic laws prohibit the desecration of corpses, for example, even when such desecration causes no direct or indirect harm to others. Child sex robots are a paradigmatic example of symbolic harm; they are offensive and morally corrosive. ⚡️Mass insanity will happen at the intimate cross-pollination of humans and machines. Collective madness occurs when we stop knowing who’s human and what’s not human; then we will dehumanize each other. Morality starts with respecting living beings above all. We are evolving away from our humanity, from the aspects of us that AI can’t replicate. AI is hardening us away from our primal instincts, our natural needs, our spiritual urges as the internet is emphasizing logos too much. Eurydice Eve speaks with the author and activist Ru Freeman about the Future of Labor, the Choice of Job, the Purpose and Meaning of Work, the Silent Resignation, the Quitting Generation. How will people make a living? What Happens to Labor under climate change? What happens to all the people who live by the land when the land is no longer usable or factories are run by machines and robots? How are people going to live? We must revisit the structure of our economy: what we put money into and what we get money for. The way we treat women is directly tied with the way we view labor and what’s wrong with the world. Our politics affects ordinary people. Incremental changes can lead to huge social changes that are destructive, or not. Every single one of us has the ability to change the system by refusing to participate and refusing to compete. We let Globalization happen. Begun by Reagan and continued by Clinton, it started with the gutting of labor unions; it brought down the cost of goods by sending labor out of countries that had labor unions. Now most people make less money and the super rich make more and the rest try to become super rich. In the 50s 65% of Americans 2 out of 3 belonged to a union. Now its under 20%. We go into recession once a decade because we no longer have a means of production in the US. We only have the 1%, the people who own the capital, the top of the pyramid. They own corporate real estate, industry, banking, and pay no taxes, because they don’t sell anything anymore, they have no income, they live off loans and acquire and acquire and invest. They spend and hoard. By not paying taxes they don’t contribute to society. The richest people don’t produce anything.
