Arts & Culture Podcasts

The Road Case features the four women of award-winning country band Nice Horse. With each of them coming from very different musical backgrounds, they had no idea their worlds would one day collide into starting a country band together - but they did, and it worked. The ladies have had major ups and downs along the way, resulting in experiences that have been gut-grabbingly hilarious, incredibly trying, occasionally heartwarming, and sometimes downright idiotic. Hop into the tour van and join Katie, Brandi, Krista & Tara in The Road Case: stories of life on the road, with some of the friends they’ve met along the way.

47. D'orjay The Singing Shaman: The Case of the Musical Pilgrimage

12/20/2021
D'orjay The Singing Shaman colours outside the country music lines with anthemic, bold blues, honky-tonk and rock-flavoured roots with a distinct queer, Black twist. Originally from rural Alberta, she was a 2021 nominee for Country Artist of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards, and has been featured in Rolling Stone (!!!) We kick things off with the story of D'orjay's incredible path to music, which took her from small-town Alberta to meeting her Buddhist guru in Vancouver, a pilgrimage to Tibet, energy healing in Thailand, and shaman school in Chile. Krista and D'orjay bond over some tall-girl problems, and compare notes on their similar late-bloomer experiences beginning professional country music careers in their thirties. Tara tells about her favourite word - NO - and we discuss the importance of advocating for yourself and your art while Brandi explains the parallels she sees between country music and classical music. Finally, we dig in to the value and power of representation in country music, with big shoutouts to the University of Ottawa's Dr. Jada Watson (we recommend you check out all her research and writing on country music) and DeFord Bailey (a Black man who is the first performer EVER to have his music recorded in Nashville). We literally COULD NOT stop talking - you're gonna want to have a listen, and then you're gonna want to form a D'orjay The Singing Shaman fan club. 46. Vanessa and Bex: The Case of More Than Enough Love

12/13/2021
This week, we welcome a couple of ethically non-monogamous lovebirds to the podcast - Vanessa and Bex! They take us through their sweet (and sometimes spicy) love story: how they met, how they began exploring polyamory, how Bex become a part of Vanessa's life alongside her three kids and spouse of 13 years (who is not polyamorous), and all the challenging, hilarious, and heartwarming moments along the way. Plus, Vanessa, a professional harpist, tells us about the time she was saved by a miracle harp while on tour in China, and recounts a heart-stopping story involving John Williams (yes, THAT John Williams) and the score to Schindler's List. 12/6/2021
It’s been awhile since we’ve all seen each other, and we have a lot to get caught up on! Brandi ducks out early because she had a bit TOO much fun during the Canadian Country Music Awards and lost her voice. Katie tells us how she learned about ethical non-monogamy, and applies the concept to Tara’s recent tour with (gasp!) ANOTHER BAND. Plus, we all have a lot of feelings about the new reality of travelling during the COVID-19 pandemic, and Krista is here to tell you about her thoughts on all the new procedures whether you want her to or not. 44. Don Amero: The Case of the Post-Gig Fight Club

11/29/2021
This week we welcome one of our very favourite Canadian singer-songwriters to the show - Don Amero! This JUNO nominee hails from Manitoba and is one of the sweetest and most talented dudes you'll ever meet. First off, we reminisce about Brandi's old van, Ruby, Don gives us the rundown on his recent gig with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (!), and we discuss how best to escape the polar bears in Churchill, MB - plus, Don's got a great coldest-show-ever story of his own, and he tells us what he thinks makes Canadian music is so damn good. Then Don, who is of Cree and Métis heritage, shares with us his super generous education-forward approach to his social media, and digs the complexity behind his performance of the Canadian national anthem at a Winnipeg Jets game following the discovery of the remains of 215 Indigenous children at a former residential school in Kamloops, BC. We cap it off with an inspiring chat about what it means to approach what you do with an attitude of service and leading by example, and Don tells us the most hilariously awkward road story we've ever heard. 43. J.G. Miller: The Case of the Life-Changing Cold Call

11/22/2021
This week, we welcome Sergeant First Class J.G. Miller to the show! J.G. is the principal horn and section leader of the US Army Field Band, and he also toured with legendary British rock band The Who. For real - this guy's got some stories. First, though, Krista wants to make sure everyone in the world knows how old she and J.G. are by reminiscing about their time together at the University of Southern California, and then J.G. takes us through the truly insane combination of luck, guts, skill, and quick thinking that landed him the "Quadrophenia and More" tour with The Who. Brandi and J.G. spend a little time fan-girling over renowned bass player Pino Palladino - a mentor of J.G.'s from the tour - and we get the inside scoop on some valuable musical lessons he learned while on the road. Next, J.G. tells us about how he ended up in the military - including some pretty dramatic lifestyle changes - and how he uses his position to put focus on the importance of mental health and making meaningful connections. We dig into why, exactly, military bands exist, what the true purpose of a musical performance might be, and how the pandemic was an important wake-up call for a lot of arts organizations. Finally, we get an inspiring rundown of J.G.'s "Three C's" philosophy of artistry: curiosity, commitment, and community. The Road Case Official Website Join us on socials! Instagram Facebook Twitter

42. Corb Lund: The Case of the Margaret Atwood Yodel

11/15/2021
This week, it's the incomparable Corb Lund! This born-and-raised Alberta boy has a history as an artist spanning 25+ years, including ten albums, three gold records, and a literal armful of awards. We chat about all-ages shows and metal, clear up the pronunciation of "Nice Horse", and try to get Corb's 81-year-old barrel-racer mom on the show. Then we get serious and dig into all the important stuff behind his newest release, "This Is My Prairie", which also features Brandi and Katie as guest artists. This song, in Corb's words, "voices the solidarity we feel with ranchers, urban and rural Albertans and First Nations communities in strongly opposing coal mining in the heart of our Rocky Mountains", and he fills us in on some of the history behind this important movement and how he became an anti-coal advocate. Finally, we talk about being a musical weirdo, Corb's acting career, and the art of writing "fun tunes" - plus, Corb tells about the most terrifying moment of his entire career (no spoilers here, but it involves Margaret Atwood AND Joni Mitchell). Buckle up - this one's a ride. Corb Lund's Official Website See Corb in "Time Stands Still", running Nov 18-28, 2021 in Calgary, AB The Road Case Official Website Join us on socials! 41. Michael McAdam: The Case of the Full Sick Bag

11/8/2021
This week we welcome Michael McAdam to the show! Google "Funny Flight Attendant", and he'll be in the top three hits, guaranteed. Videos of Michael's hysterical in-flight safety demonstration went viral in 2019, and he's now one of the most recognizable flight attendants in North America. Michael and our own former flight attendant Brandi swap some good, bad, and ugly stories about their experiences in the air - they're hilarious, unbelievable, and not for the faint of stomach - and Michael fills us in on his secret double (triple?) lives. 40. Kelly Prescott: The Case of Being Fashionably Late to the Grand Ole Opry

11/1/2021
Kelly Prescott is a third-generation singer/songwriter from Ottawa, ON. She's CCMA-nominated, has toured with Alan Doyle and Matchbox 20, just signed a record deal with Warner Music Canada, and is one of the funniest people we know. We kick it off with some talk about the dangers of too much alcohol before flying, Tara and Kelly's meet-cute in Hamilton, and Kelly's vocal routine (hint: it involves spicy food, cigarettes, and tequila) - then, Kelly gets real with us about why she left Nashville, and we break down her worst-best review ever. From there, it's all zombies, drugs, and rock & roll. Come for the music legends; stay for the EPIC road stories. Kelly Prescott Official Website The Road Case Official Website Join us on socials! 39. The Case of the Sixth-Sense Sisters

10/25/2021
Just in time for Halloween, we're bringing you our spookiest episode yet: enough real-life ghost stories to fill a whole haunted mansion, told by FOUR different guests. First up, we welcome back musician and horror queen Morgan Lander, co-host of the Witch Finger Horror Podcast! She fills us in on what she's up to lately with her current project, Karkaos, we discuss proper screaming technique, and she tells us about some very weird happenings at a notoriously haunted theatre on one of Kittie's first tours. Next, Brandi's sister Brette joins us to shame Brandi about her overall lack of Game of Thrones knowledge and tell a whole bunch of tales about her creepy childhood sixth sense (yes, THAT sixth sense). Not to be outdone, Krista brings on her own sister Tara. Once we figure out how to differentiate between the two Taras, we're rewarded with a story about the night she and Krista were BOTH separately visited by a ghost; plus, we get a bonus scare involving a very unsettling Body Snatchers-style incident with her then-newborn son. We round the episode out with some goodies from Tanya Candler, original bass player for Kittie and host of the 21st Century Rocker Mom Podcast, who has a whole family legacy of spirits. Boo! 38. The Case of the Rocky Mountain Mishap (and Even More Tour Breakdowns)

10/18/2021
We're back this week with even more terrifying and ridiculous car-related misadventures! Brandi provides a detailed PSA on why you should never use cruise control while driving through the Rockies in the wintertime, Katie lays down the law on the absolute necessity of learning to drive a stick shift, and Krista and Tara deliver an open love letter to neuroscientist Andrew Huberman (call us, Andy!) Next, Katie regales us with a Seinfeld-esque story involving her NHL-drafted cousin, a giant owl, and not one but TWO tow trucks, and Tara recalls an Alabama gas station breakdown with a very unsettling Tiger King twist. Finally, we all reminisce about a few narrow rental car escapes we've had over the years. Nothing a little spit-polish can't fix! The Road Case Official Website Join us on socials! 37. The Case of the 401 360 (and Other Tour Breakdowns)

10/11/2021
First up, we hear about Katie and Brandi's writing trip to Nashville and a close call that made them feel like a couple of teenagers with an over-the-counter test, and we chat about the weirdness of being a musician in the time of COVID and mourn the loss of our favourite taco joint. Then, start your engines: Krista tells us about a scary near-miss on Ontario's Highway 401 (home of the show "Heavy Rescue: 401"), and Brandi gives us a lesson in her own driving philosophy, best described as "Spirit of the Law". Finally, Tara recalls a time when the tour bus ran out of gas in the name of a sandwich, and she learned her true place in the hierarchy of that particular tour (hint: somewhere below the missing soda-pop shipment). 36. Corporal Kate Ballard: The Case of the Misbehaving Plane

10/4/2021
Corporal Kate Ballard is an avionics systems technician with the Royal Canadian Air Force, currently working as Technical Coordinator with the SNOWBIRDS! Yep, you read that right - Kate is responsible for keeping Canada's most iconic aerobatics team in the air. Not only does she hold down one of the most competitive and challenging positions in the Canadian Forces, but she also plays the trumpet and French horn and is one of the smartest and most genuine people we've had the pleasure of hosting. Kate takes us through so much cool stuff: her day-to-day responsibilities while on tour cross-Canada with the Snowbirds, some of the unbelievable history of the squadron, her role in the incredible Operation INSPIRATION, what it feels like to fly wingtip to wingtip, and the secrets and mystery behind naming the planes. Plus, we can't help gushing a little bit about our love for Moose Jaw, SK (where Kate and the Snowbirds are based), Brandi and Kate bond over band pranks and the horrors of basic training, and Kate fills us in on the art of packing for tour in a tiny jet. 35. Lindsay Dunn: The Case of Bear Suits and Boundaries

9/27/2021
This week we welcome the amazing Lindsay Dunn to the show! She's an award-winning broadcast journalist reporting on both music and sports, and is Toronto's only female sportscaster for a national network. Her respect in the industry has landed her interviews with the likes of Magic Johnson, Dolly Parton, and so many more. We immediately try and start a band (or at least a woodwind quintet) with Lindsay, reminisce about the glory days of HMV, and can't stop talking about our deep love of Lindsay's home province of Saskatchewan (including Regina's best kept secret - epic pizza). Then we dive into Lindsay's experiences as a sports broadcaster and what it's like to literally be the only woman in the locker room. The Road Case Official Website Join us on socials!
