5/18/2020
In the last chapter, Opal learned a lesson from Gloria Dump. That lesson was, "don't judge people by what they did in the past, but judge them by what they're doing right now." In the next chapters, Opal is going to visit Miss. Franny Block in the library. Miss. Franny is going to tell Opal a story. As you listen, think about why she's telling this story to Opal. At the end of the story, think about what Litmus might do next. Chapter 14, Teacher Read Aloud, "Because of Winn-Dixie" by Kate DiCamillo

5/13/2020
In this next chapter, Opal is going to be talking to Gloria Dump in her back yard. We know that Opal likes talking to Gloria Dump, even though Stevie and Dunlap had told her that Gloria is a witch. But, Opal didn't really believe that, in fact, she knows Gloria Dump is a nice old lady. Stevie and Dunlap probably said that Gloria was a witch because she's old, lives alone, and they don't really know her very well. We could say Opal learned a lesson not to believe things about people without knowing them. In this next chapter, Opal is going to learn another lesson. When you're finished listening to this chapter, think about what lesson Opal learned, and let us know what you think the lesson was. There's probably more than one answer. I look forward to hearing what you have to say!

Chapter 13, Teacher Read Aloud of "Because of Winn-Dixie," by Kate DiCamillo

5/11/2020
Last week, you wrote about Opal's character. You said she's kind, she loves animals. You told us she's a helper. You said she misses her mom, and that she's lonely. You had many great things to say about her! Good readers think about what the characters say and do, and get an idea of what the character is like. As you listen to the next chapter, pay attention to all the characters. What are they like? At the end of this chapter, I'm going to ask you who your favorite character is, and why. *Chapter 13* Well, what did you think of that chapter? Who is your favorite character so far, and why? Send a note to your teacher using 2-3 sentences to let us know. I'll see you on Wednesday, when I read chapter 14 of "Because of Winn-Dixie!"

Chapter 12, "Because of Winn-Dixie," by Kate DiCamillo

5/6/2020
During today’s chapter, I want you to think about Opal. What are some things that Opal does in the story. What could we say about her character? Character means, what is the person like? For example, in the first chapter, what’s something that Opal did? She rescued Winn-Dixie from going to the pound. What could we say about her character? We could say she loves dogs. We could say she’s caring. We could say she’s brave to stand up to the manager. Or what about in chapter 2? One thing Opal does is she tells Winn-Dixie about her mom. What can we say about Opal’s character? We could say she’s lonely. We could say she misses her mom. As you’re listening to this next chapter, think about what you know about Opal, and what could we say about her character? *Chapter 12 Today's assignment, that you're going to turn in to your teacher, is on a sheet of paper, draw a detailed picture of Opal. Around Opal, write the words that describe her character traits. Ex: Brave, caring, dog-lover, smart, helper. Send that picture to your teacher. We look forward to seeing your ideas!

Chapter 11, "Because of Winn-Dixie," by Kate DiCamillo, Teacher Read Aloud

5/4/2020
Previously, in chapter 10, Glora Dump asked Opal to tell her about herself. And, Opal says she told Gloria Dump her whole story, and that Gloria Dump listened with her whole heart. I asked you what that meant, and what I heard you say was that to “listen with all her heart” means that Gloria cares, she listens carefully when Opal is telling her story, she pays attention to Opal. She is a good friend, and that she is really nice. Then, after Opal talked to Gloria Dump, she went home. When it was bedtime, the Preacher kissed Opal good night, and Winn-Dixie hopped up on Opals bed, and went to sleep right next to her. As you listen to chapter 11, it’s still nighttime, and Opal should still be sleeping, but something wakes her up. As you listen, really imagine what’s happening. You can pause the story if you need to and rewind if you miss anything. *Chapter 11 Did you enjoy that chapter? I hope you were able to imagine what was happening. Now, it’s your turn to do some work. On a piece of paper, draw a picture to show what you imagined when you listened to this chapter, and share that picture with your teacher.

"Because of Winn-Dixie," by Kate DiCamillo: Teacher Read Aloud, Chapter 10

4/29/2020
Do you remember the list of 10 things about Opal’s mom? One of those things was that her mom was really good at growing things in a garden. The preacher said “she could plant a tire and grow a car.” That was his way of saying Opal’s mom was good at planting and growing things. Another way to say you’re really good at gardening is to say you have a “green thumb.” Some of you help your families in your garden at home. Some of you grow flowers, and maybe vegetables like cabbage or tomatoes. If you’re good at growing things in a garden, then you could say you have a “green thumb.” In this next chapter, Gloria Dump will suggest that Opal try to plant something in her garden, to see if Opal has a green thumb like her mom did. When you’re done listening to the chapter, you can go back to Google Classroom, where your teacher posted a Kahoot! Challenge for Winn-Dixie! *Chapter 10* Well, what did you think about that chapter? Opal said she felt like Gloria was listening to her “with all her heart.” What do you think it means that she listened with all her heart? Have you ever had someone listen to you with all their heart? Do you ever listen to anyone with all your heart? How do you think it made Opal feel to have Gloria Dump listen to her like that? Send your teacher your thoughts about this chapter, and make sure to do the Kahoot! Challenge that you can see on Google Classroom. I’ll see you on Monday for the next chapter of “Because of Winn-Dixie!”

"Because of Winn-Dixie," by Kate DiCamillo, Chapter 9, Teacher Read-Aloud

4/27/2020
Welcome back to chapter 9 of “Because of Winn-Dixie.” Previously on Winn-Dixie, Opal wanted to buy a leash and collar for Winn-Dixie, but she couldn’t afford it with her allowance. So, Opal asked Otis, the person who worked at the pet store, if she could get a job there sweeping the floors and cleaning cages. Opal said Winn-Dixie would have to come inside the store with her, because he doesn’t like to be left behind. She let Winn-Dixie in the store, and the parrot, Gertrude, sat on Winn-Dixie’s head. Since Gertrude liked Winn-Dixie, Otis let Opal have the job at the pet store. In this next chapter we will see the 2 brothers, Dunlap and Stevie Dewberry. We’ve heard their names before, but we haven’t really gotten to know them. We’ll also meet one new important character. Her name is Gloria Dump. Pay attention to these new characters. What do they say and do? What are they like? Be ready to share your thoughts when the chapter is done. *Chapter 9* Well, what did you think about that chapter? After hearing about the characters, Dunlap and Stevie Dewberry, what do you think about them? What do they say and do? Do you think Opal could be friends with them? What about Gloria Dump? Dunlap and Stevie said Gloria Dump is a “witch.” Why do you think they said that? Please send your thoughts and questions to your teacher. We love hearing your thoughts about the story! I’ll see you next time on “Because of Winn-Dixie.”

Because of Winn Dixie, by Kate DiCamillo, Chapter 8

4/22/2020
Thank you for sending your questions about the story! In the last chapter, Opal went to the library and met the librarian, Miss Franny Block. The librarian told Opal a story about Florida a long time ago. The librarian said Florida was wild. That meant when the librarian was a little girl, the town of Naomi wasn’t very big, and it was more like wilderness, which means there weren’t as many people living there, and there were wild animals, like the bear. In this next chapter, Opal will go to the pet store to get a leash and collar for Winn-Dixie. She will meet a new character, named Otis. Pay attention to the new setting of the pet store, and Otis, because they will be important in the story later. Remember, as you listen, to imagine what’s happening - make a movie in your mind. You can always stop the recording, and go back to listen again if you need to. I hope you enjoy this next chapter of, “Because of Winn-Dixie!” Chapter 8 Did you enjoy that chapter? In this last chapter, what does Opal want? What problem does she have getting what she wants? What does she do to solve her problem? In this book, we’ll read about different problems that Opal has. Pay attention to the big problems, and write them in your Reading Notebook or on a piece of paper. You can make 2-column notes. On one side, write Opal’s problem, and on the other side, write what she does to try to solve the problem. Please send your thoughts about this chapter to your teacher, and we’ll see you again for the next chapter of “Because of Winn-Dixie!”

Because of Winn-Dixie, Chapter 6 & 7

4/20/2020
In the last chapter of “Because of Winn-Dixie,” we learned something about the character of Winn-Dixie. We learned he doesn’t like to be left behind at home. So, Opal and her dad started taking him wherever they went. They even took him to church! In the next chapter, Opal will go to the library, and we’ll meet a new character, the librarian. The librarian’s name is “Miss. Franny Block.” Pay attention to Miss. Franny Block, and the story that she’d going to tell Opal. **chapter 6-7 Well readers, what did you think of that story? How do you think Opal felt when she was listening to Miss Franny’s story about the bear? In the last part of the chapter, a new person comes into the library. She’s Amanda Wilkenson, and Opal had mentioned her before as a girl who goes to her church, but Opal didn’t think Amanda would want to be her friend. What do you think Amanda Wilkenson is going to be like? What clues in the story make you think that? Send a message to your teacher with your comments about this chapter. Be sure to tune in again next time for the 8th chapter of “Because of Winn-Dixie!”

Because of Winn-Dixie, by Kate Dicamillo, Teacher Read-Aloud, Chapter 5

4/17/2020
Welcome back, Azusa, Biola & Stanford Scholars! This is Miss Martin with chapter 5 of “Because of Winn-Dixie,” by Kate DiCamillo. Thank you for sharing your questions and comments about Chapter 4. Many of you told me it was sad that Opal’s mom left, and you were wondering about her, like what was her name? How old was she? Could Opal go looking for her? One student asked the question, “What does it mean that Opal’s mom could ‘plant a tire and grow a car?” That was figurative language, kind of like when Opal says her dad is “like a turtle, tucking his head inside of his shell.” That just means that he’s quiet. He doesn’t talk a lot. So, when Opal’s dad said her mom could “plant a tire and grow a car,” that was just a way to say Opal’s mom was very good at planting and growing things in the garden. Readers ask questions about the story they’re reading, so I’m glad you’ve all been sharing your questions! Now, as we listen to chapter 5, another thing that good readers do is they make a movie in their mind as they read. You might close your eyes and imagine what’s happening in the story. You may even pause the story, so you could envision what’s happening, before you press play and listen to the rest of the story. *Chapter 5* Well, what did you think about that chapter? As you read, could you imagine Winn-Dixie catching the mouse and bringing it to the preacher? What part of the story did you imagine? Please send a message to your teacher, you can either draw a picture of the part of the story that you imagined, or you could just write a sentence or two about the part that you were imagining. We look forward to hearing from you, and I’ll see you next time when we read more of “Because of Winn-Dixie.”

"Because of Winn-Dixie," by Kate DiCamillo. Teacher Read-Aloud, Chapter 4

4/15/2020
Welcome back, Azusa, Biola & Stanford Scholars! This is Miss Martin, continuing our class read aloud, “Because of Winn-Dixie,” by Kate DiCamillo. Previously, in chapter 3 of Winn-Dixie, we read that Opal gave Winn-Dixie a bath, and while she cleaned Winn-Dixie up, she talked to him about her life. She told Winn-Dixie about moving to a new town, and about how Opal doesn’t remember her mother, because she left when Opal was 3 years old. As she talked to Winn-Dixie, Opal felt encouraged to go talk to her dad about her mom. So, she and Winn-Dixie went inside, and Opal asked her dad to tell her 10 things about her mama. This is what her dad told her… *Chapter 4* What did you think about that chapter, readers? In Chapter Four, the preacher told Opal 10 things about her mother. Some of those things were good things, and some of them were sad. This list that we get from Opal’s dad, tells us about the character of Opal’s mom. We haven’t met Opal’s mom in the story, just like Opal doesn’t really know her. We just listened to Opal’s dad talk about her. Do these ten things tell us enough to really know Opal’s mother? What else might Opal want to know about her mama? What else would you like to know? Send your teacher a message with your thoughts and questions. We look forward to hearing from you. And, make sure to listen next week when we read chapter 5 of “Because of Winn-Dixie!”

"Winn-Dixie" Chapter 3

4/13/2020
Hi, welcome back Azusa, Biola and Stanford scholars! This is chapter 3 of “Because of Winn-Dixie,” by Kate DiCamillo. Last week, we read the first 2 chapters of this book, and some of you had some very good questions. Some of you were wondering how Opal came up with the name, Winn-Dixie. Do you remember the store Opal was in when she first saw the dog? The name of the store was Winn-Dixie, so that was the first name that she thought of when she named the dog. That would be like if I found a cat wandering around outside a Taco Bell, and named the cat Taco-Bell. In chapter 2, we met Opal’s dad, and he lets Opal keep Winn-Dixie. But, remember Winn-Dixie is a mess, and she has a lot of work to do to clean him up! Keep listening to find out what happens next with Opal, her dad, and Winn-Dixie! *Read Chapter 3 In chapter 3, Opal talks to Winn-Dixie while she’s giving him a bath and cleaning him up. Opal tells Winn-Dixie about moving to a new town, and how she doesn’t really have any friends. She also tells Winn-Dixie about her mama. Opal says her mom left when she was 3 years old, so she doesn’t really remember her. Opal really wants to talk to her dad about her mom, and when she talks to Winn-Dixie, she finally gets the courage to ask her dad to tell her ten things about her mom. What do you think about chapter 3? What emotions do you think Opal was feeling in this chapter? Send a message to your teacher with your answer or your thoughts about chapter 3. We look forward to hearing your thoughts. Make sure to tune in on Wednesday for the next chapter of “Because of Winn-Dixie!”

"Winn-Dixie" Ch 2!

4/8/2020
Welcome back, Azusa Pacific, Biola and Stanford scholars! This is part 2 of our “Because of Winn-Dixie” read-aloud. In the last episode, we met our main character, Opal. She went to the store to get some groceries, and when she got to the market, a dog was running around in the store! Opal gave the dog a name, “Winn-Dixie,” and she rescued him from going to the pound. But, now Opal has a problem. She already loves Winn-Dixie, but she’s going to need to convince her father to let her keep the dog. Do you think she’ll be able to persuade him to let her keep him? Listen to the next part, of “Because of Winn-Dixie” to find out!. Text: Winn-Dixie text: 2nd half of Chapter 1-2 I hope you enjoyed chapter 2. We met Opal’s father, she calls him “the preacher.” She said her father was like a “turtle hiding inside its shell, in there thinking about things and not ever sticking his head out into the world.” What does that mean? Is Opal’s father a turtle? No, of course not. She just means that her father is quiet, and he works hard, and doesn’t talk a lot. Do you know anyone like that? What are some encouraging words that you might say to someone who is like a turtle, hiding inside its shell. Send a message to your teacher to let her know your thoughts about Opal’s dad, or something you were thinking as you listened to the story. We hope to hear from you soon, and make sure to tune in next time for part 3 of “Because of Winn-Dixie!”
