022: MASTER STORYTELLING - Youssou N'Dour, Africa Now in Senegal

4/13/2023
Senegalese musician, entrepreneur and statesman Youssou N’Dour loves nothing more than to quote his deceased compatriot, the caliph general Cheikh Ahmed Tidiane Sy: ‘It’s good to resemble one’s father, but it’s better to resemble one’s era.’ The Senegalese singer is known for his extraordinary vocal range and for introducing international audiences to mbalax—a Senegalese popular music style that blends Wolof traditional instrumental and vocal forms primarily with Cuban and other Latin American popular genres. According to Forbes, Youssou N'Dour is the richest African musician in the world in 2022, with a net worth of $145 million. His enormous net worth arose from the use of his distinct voice and the popularization of the well-known Senegalese style of music known as Mbalax. On October 1, 1959, he was born in Dakar, Senegal. He served as Senegal’s Minister of Tourism from April 2012 to September 2013. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine maintained that N’Dour is “perhaps the most famous singer alive” in Senegal and much of Africa. "Africa has no cultural frontiers. It mixes genres effortlessly. That's the future for me." Youssou N'Dour Show Guest: Youssou N'Dour Show Host and Creator: Patrick A. 021: EXCELLENCE - Ruth Carter, 2X Academy Award Winner

3/29/2023
It is said that excellence is a habit rather than a destination. Also, that you are what you do consistently. If that is true, then Ruth Carter who just won her second academy award for Best Costume Design for the film "Wakanda, Forever", is the epitome of excellence. She won the first award in 2018 with Wakanda's predecessor, "Black Panther". She was also nominated for Spike Lee's Malcolm X in 1993 and Steven Speilberg's "Amistad" in 1998. To hear Ruth tell it, however? She is as humble, passionate and focused as an intern looking for her big break. Sure, she's comfortable. But she's leaning in and her focus is poignant. And perhaps, that's where her true magic lays - her consistency and effervescence. Ruth Carter is the first black woman in American history to win the Oscar on her sartorial splendor, the basis of technically astute work, timeless art and the storytelling legacy of her ancestors. Yes, she looks at costume design as storytelling and takes her griot cues from sheroes including Nikki Giovanni, Lorraine Hansberry and Sonia Sanchez. "My favorite part about costume designing is the artistry of the job... I begin with understanding the intentions of the story." Ruth Carter Guest: Ruth Carter Host: Patrick A. 020: ENTREPRENEUR - Bob Unnold, Did You Remember To, LLC

2/12/2023
Bob Unnold has led several startups, including two in Stamford: Axxun, which created a platform for software developers to compress the amount of time needed to delivery applications; and I3 Mobile, which created a subscription-based service delivering news to mobile phones. I3 Mobile held an $82 million initial public offering of stock in 2000. His newest endeavor is Atendit which sells wireless tags that, when linked to an accompanying Apple IOS app, allow users to get reminders on specific things at set times and days when walking by a sensor. Memory scientists have a name — the event horizon model — for the tendency of people forgetting things as they move through the house and out the door. The starter package is selling on Amazon for $30 and an Android version is in the works. Bob Unnold has over the decades developed the pitch perfect acumen of an entrepreneur. “In colleges today, there are majors in entrepreneurship. I don’t really personally believe that you can teach entrepreneurship. It’s something that’s in a person. It’s an aggressive approach in a person and you don’t know if you’re an entrepreneur until it’s Wednesday, and you’ve got a $30,000 payroll on Friday with no money in the bank; then you have to figure out how to actually get that money and how to do it- otherwise you’re going to have a lot of unhappy employees.” Guest: Bob Unnold Affiliate Company: Did You Remember To, LLC Host: Patrick A. 018: SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY - Derek Lewis (Part II), Corporate Titan of Community

12/2/2022
"Social Responsibility" is all but a catch phrase in American corporate lingo. In this Part II episode, PepsiCo's Derek Lewis, President of Multicultural Business and Equity Development for PepsiCo Beverages North America, provides insight into a first-rate business IQ, and spells out how profit-driven corporations will not propel transformational change with money alone. He uniquely understands that it will take not only billions in financial commitment from corporations, but an attendant will power for sustained change from within the system. He explains how diversity and inclusion fundamentally impact the Fortune 500 bottom line and P&L. Derek Lewis recently retired as the President of PepsiCo's Multicultural Business and Equity Development after a total of nearly 35 years with PepsiCo Beverages. During his career at PepsiCo, he strived to live by what he calls "the 3 Rs": Results - delivering solid and consistent performance the right way matters; Relationships - personal, professional, and spiritual; nurture these relationships and always be a great teammate. Reputation - be mindful of your actions. To live purposefully to create a positive legacy that generations will remember. He is the embodiment of this integrity. He understands how these strategies deployed with authenticity and boldness determine the future of community, but the bottom line of business. Bottom line? Do business the right way, now. Derek Lewis is a corporate titan of Community. "As I close one chapter, a new one opens. There is still work to do. And I'm not done. I will always be committed to making a difference." - Derek Lewis CREDITS: Guest: Derek Lewis Guest Host: Tori Reid Producer: Patrick A. 017: CHANGE - Derek Lewis, President of PepsiCo Multicultural Business and Equity Development

12/2/2022
The first African American PepsiCo employees were hired in the 1940s. Maryann Bond and Allen McKellar, Jr. were hired by PepsiCo's CEO Walter S. Mack to market Pepsi Cola to African American communities. In 2021, Derek Lewis was promoted from within the ranks of PepsiCo to President of Multicultural Business and Equity Development for PepsiCo Beverages North America. A Pepsi tradition of corporate social responsibility results in bottom line results nearly 100 years later. In the wake of George Floyd's death and the international Black Lives Matter marches of nearly 26 million, countless Fortune 500 companies pledged nearly $50 billion dollars to social justice. PepsiCo was one of those companies. In this very special episode on the campus of Hampton University at a hallmark homecoming, PepsiCo’s North American President Derek Lewis and guest host Tori Reid discuss sustainable, long-lasting change, his dedicated leadership, and PepsiCo's central role in multicultural communities. "Success in my mind is the bar is always moving... The consumer landscape is moving. America is changing. How do you continue to stay ahead of the curve?" - Derek Lewis CREDITS: Guest: Derek Lewis Guest Host: Tori Reid Producer: Patrick A. Darrell K. Williams is a retired three-star general who is now the President of his alma mater Hampton University. He is also a former Vice President and Managing Director of Leidos, a Fortune 250 technology company where he provided global logistical support to U.K. military forces. Williams is a tried-and-true leader whose greatest assignment as a leader, commander and director may very well be in front of him with the Hampton, one of the world's top historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and a beloved institution. In this special episode of Getting Deals Done (GDD), our executive producer Tori Reid takes the opportunity to speak with new President Darrell K. In Part 1 of this insightful and timely interview, Williams talks about his inspirational journey from student cadet to three-star general to President of his beloved alma mater, his unique and successful brand of leadership, his vision for Hampton University and how "a standard of excellence" has not only created one of the best mid-sized universities in the United States but a piston in global engines for leaders of character. 014: VISION - Aaron Chang, Social Entrepreneur

9/19/2022
Aaron Chang is a visionary photographer and fine artist. His photography and fine art has generated tens of millions in revenues working with premiere national brands as Apple, Google, Mercedes Benz, ViaSat Satellites and any number of hospitals. As a true visionary, Aaron is able to see into the higher realms of human potential and possibility. As a business man, he walks the fine and often challenging line between the inspired world – intuition, reflection, the Divine-inspired – and the material world of action, effects, systems, powerful special interests, ego, status quo, and tangible results. Aaron Chang is also, in many ways and unconventionally, a social entrepreneur. "Social Entrepreneurism" has been a catchphrase for the past decade or so. But what does it mean? Sure, giving with a servant heart attitude. But it's a form of capitalism, where profit is surely a focus but is not the bottom line. It is where everyone benefits from the vision of a visionary. Some folks are so poor all they have is money. Aaron Chang does not allow himself to be hypnotized by the limiting mindset or the mass hallucination of what's popular or "normal". Instead, he is interested in pulling people up with his photography and art. His business and galleries invigorate and stir a greater possibility within his art customers as well as the aficionado's heart. “..We live crazy maniacally busy lives in realms that don’t even exist, you know virtual realms most of the time. And we often miss the really simple things all around us all the time that are God's beautiful creations and moments of absolute splendor; and so what I love to do most is to take the opportunity to see those things, photograph them well, and present them to people- things that are often right under your nose.” Aaron Chang This episode of "Getting Deals Done" (GDD) represents the re-launch as GDD 2.0 where values and principles are the bedrock of personal and business successes such as Aaron Chang's incredible vision and heart of service. Both principles or qualities permeate not only his artwork but the art of his business where millions in revenues are secondary to reflecting an incredible vision and humanity from which Aaron has built a global business and brand. 09.5: MAVERICK - Tim Reid (Part II) - History Maker and System Builder

2/13/2022
This Black History Month and on Super Bowl LVII, we celebrate a champion and pioneer in the truest sense of the words. Since 1974, Tim Reid has both starred and guest starred as a venerable who's who of the small screen. From The Richard Pryor Show to WKRP in Cincinnati to Simon and Simon and Snoops or That 70s Show, he has acted, produced, directed, and created himself into a cult classic iconoclast over several of the golden ages of television. Every icon has a creative expression or project which demonstrates their virtuosity as well as core essence as an actor. For Tim Reid that show was the Emmy-nominated Frank's Place on CBS. New Millennium Studios was a direct outgrowth of Frank’s Place being cancelled by short-sighted studios, where he became 2nd to Oscar Micheaux to have a Black-owned full service movie studio. Outside of his own, dozens of films shot there, including Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln”. As we learn in this episode, anger and depression catalyzed a studio that a young Tyler Perry visited prior to his own epic and historic achievement. We talk about that and the reality of making it in, and outside of Hollywood. Credits: Guest: Tim Reid Producer: Victory & Noble Creator and Host: Patrick A. 009: LEGACY - Tim Reid, Maverick Auteur Working Outside of the System

1/30/2022
The best storytelling the world has ever known requires several tentpoles: Authenticity, Outcome, Consistency, a Clear Agenda, a Flair or Perspective and Involving the Audience in the world of the Story. This coming year, Master storyteller Tim Reid will demonstrate a certain mastery of not only the artform but the business of storytelling with his new Legacy of a People platform (LGCYTV) set to debut globally. In this episode of “Getting Deals Done”, Mr. Reid’s Legacy Platform is clearly demonstrative of a basic storytelling principle: Storytelling is nothing more or less than being able to use words, music, images and ideas to shape the viewers’ imagination as they shape reality with their very being. “When the media defines something, you have to question: Is it the definition that you want applied to your culture? I’m trying to determine who’s leaving the legacy, and if the legacy that is being left is a positive one.” - Tim Reid Credits: Guest: Tim Reid Producer: Victory & Noble Creator and Host: Patrick A. 008: DEVOTION - Mobolaji Olambiwonnu & Aloe Blacc, Ferguson Rising

12/26/2021
Mobolaji Olambiwonnu, an auteur, has helmed “Ferguson Rises” is a documentary film about the inspiring story of the residents of Ferguson, Missouri, a small town that has suffered the loss of “gentle giant” Mike Brown. The film won the Tribeca Film Festival Audience Award, debuted to a worldwide audience on PBS, and Mobolaji has been traveling the nation and world to talk about the film which has been mentioned in an extremely competitive field as a prospective Academy Award nominee. How did the film get made? What was the director’s driving force? Why did Grammy Award singer Aloe Blacc come on board as a producer as well as contribute his song, “the other side” to the film? How is one man’s quest making a difference in the world? As the film is a powerful story that has went on to become a flashpoint for a modern-day civil rights movement, it exemplifies “Getting Deals Done’s” slogan of “Doing business. Changing Power. Changing Systems. And making the world a better place one deal at a time.” “We have to be able to tell these stories, and it’s not going to come from folks who don’t see through their own biases. It has to come from within our culture.” - Aloe Blacc "There is always the possibility for finding purpose in your pain." - Mobolaji Olambiwonnu Credits: Guest: Mobolaji Olambiwonnu Guest: Aloe Blacc Producer: Victory & Noble Creator and Host: Patrick A. 007: ENABLE - Rick Baldridge, CEO of ViaSat Satellites (VSAT) & Chief Enabling Officer

10/14/2021
Viasat’s satellite systems is a global communications company with a market cap of $4.12B based in Carlsbad, California. In our interview, CEO Richard Baldridge views his role more as a chief enabling officer versus chief visionary officer. Viasat’s prized commodity is not its multi-billion dollar satellite communications assets and ground infrastructure but the priceless quality of the lives of more than 6,000 employees—over 2,500 that work from the Carlsbad campus—who Rick seems to have a profound understanding of his role to serve, lead and inspire to their highest possible frequency. It is also Rick's decades old and ongoing intergalactic achiever's mindset to evolve his own understanding, consciousness and compassion. Viasat is a provider of high-speed satellite broadband services and secure networking systems covering military and commercial markets. Viasat believes everything and everyone in the world can be connected. But what is the spirit ennobling that global communication ?The Viasat opportunity is the 3.6 billion people (47% of earth’s population according to the GSMA) who do not have internet services in urban and the most remote areas of the world. "We often do things that other people don't think we should. But we doubled down in that space and made real progress over that period. We are ready now that people are travelling again. We are well positioned to help people travel and stay connected." - Rick Baldridge, CEO, Viasat Satellites Credits: Guest: Rick Baldridge Producer: Victory & Noble Creator, Writer and Host: Patrick A. 006: RENEGADE - Bruce Craven, Outlaw Leadership

8/13/2021
Bruce Craven is a novelist, screenwriter and maverick who lives in the Palm Springs Desert. His last book, “Win or Die: Leadership Secrets from Game of Thrones”, Bruce Craven brilliantly analyzes the journeys of the best and worst leaders in Westeros, so that leaders can create their own narratives of success. His newest idea is “outlaw leadership” as an essential component of American leadership and business success. He analyzes the disparate styles of Willie Nelson, Toni Morrison and Frederick Douglass - their style of going against the grain, having their own unique brand of leadership and being unafraid to carve out and follow their own paths. But there are others - the Henry Fords, Muhammad Alis, Madame CJ Walkers, Vera Wangs, Oprah Winfreys, Lebron James, Colin Kaepernicks, Robert Smiths, Joe Bidens, Kamala Harris and Mellody Hobsons American figures who have fought against adversity and served as pistons in the engine of American ingenuity. “Outlaw leadership is American leadership, I think Americans, if they don’t understand how much that outlaw spirit has influenced us, they’re missing something important on how we’ve developed as a people.” Bruce Craven Credits: Guest: Bruce Craven Producer: Victory & Noble Creator and Host: Patrick A.
