Advice I'd Give My Younger Self About Starting a Private Practice Today | IP175

12/9/2025
In this episode, I’m taking time to look back at what I wish I’d known when I started my private practice as a young therapist in the early 90s. (SO many things, y’all.😑) Back then, I was juggling a toddler, a full-time job as a department head, managing 2 adoptions, and starting a brand-new business. And back then, we didn’t have the kind of resources that are available today, so I was figuring it all out alone. In this personal reflection, I’ll share the lessons, missteps, and wisdom I sooo wish someone had handed me — especially around boundaries, money, even the structure of my business - and especially, the need to believe in myself more. In this episode, you’ll learn: so many new practice ownershealthyactually (I still need this, lol.)We’ll also talk about how your growth as a business owner keeps unfolding at every stage — and why that’s a beautiful thing. 🥰 Because here’s the thing… You really can build a practice that sustains you, instead of one that quietly drains you - if you only knew a few things that I myself didn’t learn for a very long time. ~Wendy P.S. Having Clear Money Conversations with Your Clients Will Help Them. Here's How. | IP 174

12/2/2025
Listen. I get it. Money can be one of the hardest things to talk about — especially for therapists, healers, and wellness professionals who pour their hearts 💟 into their work. That’s why I’m bringing back one of the best episodes from the Ideal Practice archives — all about the messy, emotional relationship healers have with money. This is a conversation about boundaries, integrity, and abundance — and how talking about money with your clients is not just practical, but deeply therapeutic. In this episode, you’ll hear… hurts (No one talks about this, y’all. )and even healingand still people-forwardYou’ll also hear how your willingness to name the “money elephant” in the room will strengthen trust with almost every client you serve. And when you learn these skills, my friend, your fear about any money talk will begin to fade — and you’ll start seeing it as a natural part of good, ethical care. I know. #Radical, right? Here’s a little challenge for you… If you’ve got a client that you need to talk to about the money side of your relationship, don’t wait another week. Choose one account, one overdue balance, or one fee conversation — and let’s address it, how about it? Be clear. Be kind. And take that step today. You will feel better, and there’s a good chance they will too. You got this! ~Wendy P.S. #Truth >> Especially if there’s a problem, your clients are already thinking about money — whether you address it or not. Feeling Grateful: Why I Still Believe in Private Practice | IP 173

11/25/2025
This week, I’m sharing a quick Thanksgiving-week reflection on why I still believe in private practice, even when the work feels hard… along with a simple exercise to help you reconnect with the good stuff in all of this. (If you ever ask yourself if the hassle of owning a business is worth it - that exercise will help.) As we head into the holiday here in the U.S., I know many of you have a lot on your plate. 🦃 #Understatement So I thought it might be nice to just take a quick pause before we all get REALLY busy and remember why the work we do matters. So. Much. Private practice isn’t always easy. Hardly ever, really… There are long days, last-minute cancellations, challenging client moments, and financial lessons we’d rather not learn. There’s the dance of managing a practice on top of having a life. And some seasons feel heavier than others. All of that is real. So in this Reflection, I’ll share a few stories, insights, and reminders that help me stay grounded when things get tough… …including a different way to think about gratitude. Lord knows that gratitude doesn’t erase the challenges — but it does give them context. And it can reconnect us to the deeper purpose behind our work. So in this episode, you’ll hear… even in the tough timesPerhaps especially in the tough times. actuallysacredreconnectI’ve got a great exercise that can help you spot, savor, and store the small wins that make your practice meaningful too — the kind you can return to whenever you need a lift. Good stuff. Important. Grounding. I hope you have a lovely Thanksgiving - and if you’re off this week… yay for you! 🎉 I also hope you get a moment - or three - to breathe, and as we say here in the South - count your blessings. :) Thanks for tuning in, my friend. ~Wendy P.S. Hey - if this episode encourages you, share it with someone who might need a little reminder of why their work matters, too. 🙌 And just in case I haven’t said it lately – I’m really grateful you’re here. ____________ MENTIONED Mind Over Money™One of my most popular courses, open just in time to help insulate you from holiday stress. DOING THINGS YOUR WAY: The HEART of an IDEAL PRACTICE | IP 172

11/18/2025
If you’ve ever found yourself feeling exhausted, under-appreciated, and wondering if private practice is really worth it, this episode is for you. In this replay of one of our classics, I’m going back to one of the very first conversations we ever had on the podcast: what an Ideal Practice actually is, and why giving yourself permission to do things your way changes everything. We’ll talk about how most of us slide into a “default” practice that fits everyone but us—and what it looks like to turn that around with a few honest, clarifying questions. Yeah. This is going to help you. :)) In this episode, you’ll learn: how to transition to something way better.ore mindset shift behind an Ideal Practiceyou (You may like this and you may not, lol.)howReal-life examplesreflectionAnd you’ll hear some of my favorite truths from this early episode, like: (Am I right???!)All of this so that you can start designing a practice that pays an honorable rate, reflects the good you do in the world, and actually feels like it was built for you. If this episode stirs something up for you, set aside 30 minutes this week, grab a notebook, and walk yourself through the five clarifying questions I share. Notice what already feels ideal—and what absolutely doesn’t. Then choose one small change you’re willing to make next. When you do, I’d love to hear about it. Tag me on social or send me a quick note and tell me what you’re changing in your practice next. ~Wendy P.S. If you love this episode, would you give us a 5 star review? Behind the Mic — Introducing a Seasonal Shift, and Creative Plans for Next Year | IP 171

11/11/2025
Seasons change — and so does the rhythm of our work. In today’s short “Behind the Mic” reflection, I want to tell you a little about why things on the Ideal Practice podcast might sound a little different for a while — and what’s coming next. Over the next few months, I’ll be alternating between short reflections and replays of some of my favorite episodes that are packed with value. This new rhythm gives me space to create something I’m really excited about — the self-paced, DIY version of my live course, Evolve. Whoooeeeee….! Ever wish you had a roadmap to help establish a solid foundation and grow your practice at your own pace — without adding more to your already full plate? This will be for you. So tune in today for a quick, heartfelt update about honoring your own seasons, working with intention, and our evolution as practice owners. Sometimes the most generous thing we can do is to create space for what’s next. That’s what I’m doing here. This week’s message is brief, but important. And hey! Why don’t you shoot me a note and let me know what you think about my plans. Am I on the right track here? :) I think I am. 😎 In the meantime, I’d love to know — what kind of “seasonal shift” are you in right now? Send me a DM on Facebook or an email and tell me. 💬 And have a great week! ~Wendy P.S. Michelle helps women entrepreneurs, small businesses, and nonprofits cut through the noise and create messaging that actually makes the right people stop and pay attention. In this episode, we’ll dive deep into why most people are starting their branding journey completely backwards, and how to fix that before wasting another dollar on pretty graphics that don't convert. Michelle breaks down her powerful "3 C's" framework and shares some seriously eye-opening stories about what happens when you finally get clear about who you really serve. (And, uhm, we’ll include a behind-the-scenes look at my own brand evolution that I hadn't exactly planned to share…😅). In our conversation, you'll learn: essential stepthinkone fear that you must facedo Michelle also shares that standing out isn't about being louder (or prettier or more poetic or more clever or…whatev’s). It's about being clearer. #TRUTH: Bland branding might feel safe, but it's also invisible. One of the things I love about Michelle is her ability to call it out when she sees me making a mistake in my own branding. Today - you will learn from her too, just as I have. Give it a listen. ~Wendy P.S. Did this make you think? If so, good. That’s what my goal is here on the Ideal Practice podcast. #161. Real Talk: How to Keep Your Practice Going When Life Gets Messy

9/2/2025
Question or comment? 🙋‍♀️ Send me a text message! Hey there, everyone! Last week, I had a wonderful conversation with Gordon Brewer, host of The Practice of Therapy podcast, about how to keep your private practice going when your life is completely falling apart. It touched me so deeply that I wanted to come back this week and dive in with some of my own thoughts. Because here's the thing... life happens to all of us sooner or later, right? Whether you're clocking in for someone else or running your own show, challenges are a fact of life. But when you're the CEO of your practice, you don't always have the luxury of just calling in sick. You've got clients counting on you, maybe staff who depend on their paychecks, and your own financial wellbeing hanging in the balance. 😵‍💫 So how do you keep your practice going even if it feels like everything is crumbling around you? Well, there are lots of ways, turns out. And today, I thought I’d share a bit of guidance from my own 25+ years of hard-earned experience - keeping practices running through some pretty intense life storms. In this episode, you'll hear: key to keeping your sanity best way to prepare yourself might be heading for troubleEXACTLYwhen disruption hitsThis episode was a personal one for me, because - well - #life. I've navigated infertility treatment while launching my first practice, managed international adoptions while moving houses, and later - handled divorce, illness, aging parents, and out-of-state moves - all while keeping the business doors open and serving my clients well. It didn't get easier over the years, but I definitely got better at it. So today, I want to share some ideas for how you too can navigate choppy waters when the storms come - because they will. Give it a listen. ~Wendy P.S. Do you have a favorite way of coping at your practice when life gets messy? Send me an email at wendy@WendyPittsReeves.com and share your experience. I’d love to hear! P.P.S. If you’re enjoying the podcast (as many of you tell me you are!), could you help me spread the word? Are there two friends or colleagues you know who could really use a boost of encouragement each week? Please share this episode with them. They’ll thank you! _______________ MENTIONED: Episode #160 - How Do You Serve Clients When You're Barely Surviving, Yourself? #160. How Do You Serve Clients When You're Barely Surviving, Yourself? A Conversation with Gordon Brewer

8/26/2025
Question or comment? 🙋‍♀️ Send me a text message! Today I’m sitting down with the ever-steady and ever helpful Gordon Brewer to talk about something we don't discuss nearly enough – how to keep your practice thriving when life gets really, really hard. 😓 Gordon is the owner of Kingsport Counseling Associates, a group practice, and host of The Practice of Therapy podcast. (Gordon is way ahead of me. He’s approaching his 400th episode!) He also has an extremely powerful story to share … For 13 years, Gordon successfully ran and grew his practice all while at the same time serving as primary caregiver for his beloved wife through her battle with breast cancer, brain surgery, and eventual passing in 2023. 💔 And yet somehow, even through all of that, he managed to build a sustainable practice that could support his family, serve his clients, and give him the flexibility to be present for what mattered most. How did he do that? And what can we learn from his experience? In this episode, you'll discover: specific systems that allowed him to step away from his practice when neededONE thing non-negotiables’ that helped get him throughThe truth is, folks, we never know what's coming our way. And sometimes, life may have a way of demanding everything from us right when we think we can't give any more. But as Gordon shows us, when you build the right foundation and tend to some healthy business basics right from the start, you can weather almost anything (all while still serving your clients and supporting your family). Give this one a listen. ~Wendy P.S. If this topic resonates with you, you may also want to be sure you listen to Episode 146, where I spoke with Robyn Miller about how important it is to have a professional will. P.P.S. And hey, if you enjoyed this episode, can you give us a thumbs up? Maybe even a 5 star review and a few words over on Apple Podcasts or even Spotify? _______________ TODAY’S GUEST: GORDON BREWER L. #159. How Rosanne Carter Turned Burnout Into Her Biggest Business Asset

8/19/2025
Question or comment? 🙋‍♀️ Send me a text message! Today, I’m excited to have the incredible Rosanne Carter joining us here on the podcast to talk about something that is near and dear to her heart: nervous system co-regulation and why understanding this concept could completely transform your practice (and your life). Rosanne is a psychotherapist and consultant who specializes in helping parents, children, and early childhood support professionals understand their OWN nervous systems so they can be more present and more regulated in their work and relationships. But here's why I love Rosanne's story so much … She came to private practice from a place of complete burnout, not at all sure that she could make this work. But in just 3 years, she's built a thriving 6-figure practice, not only with some super savvy business smarts, but also by learning to honor her own nervous system instead of overriding it constantly. In this episode, you'll learn: can completely change how you show up as a therapistsneaky signs that you're overriding your nervous systemA simple but powerful techniqueWe've been taught that pushing through, working harder, and ignoring our body's signals is somehow noble or professional. But as Rosanne says so beautifully: "Self regulation is not a luxury, it's leadership." And you know what? She’s right. So give this one a listen, guys. Because taking better care of yourself - and your nervous system! - is also part of having an Ideal PracticeTM. ~Wendy P.S. “Okay Wendy - THAT was interesting….!“ If that’s what you find yourself saying as you listen, would you please share a little love with a 5 star review and a few words over on Apple Podcasts or Spotify? _______________ TODAY’S GUEST: ROSANNE CARTER Rosanne Carter is the founder of Kavana Consulting and an Infant & Early Childhood Mental Health Therapist with 20+ years of experience. #158. How a Simple Scheduling App Can Help You Run a Healthier Private Practice

8/12/2025
Question or comment? 🙋‍♀️ Send me a text message! She was on the edge of burnout… …getting sick more often, and having to cancel appointments with clients she loved - all because she’d lost any semblance of control over her calendar. Funny isn’t it? How easy it is for us to get ourselves in trouble - just because we want to be there when our clients need us, or - heck - because we’re trying to make a living. But it happens - a lot. And it breaks my heart. I used to be the same way - until I finally made the decision to try something new, and maybe - just maybe - change the way I set up my work week, just by changing the way I handled a client’s requests for an appointment. Such a small thing. Such a big impact. It took me a good three years before I was finally willing to try it, to set up a scheduling app in my practice so that clients could schedule without calling me. I fought that idea because I thought I would be giving up control - and I couldn’t have been more wrong. In this episode, you’ll learn: losing controltotally serve your clientsstillstep by step processAND I’ll share with you how my client got her life back - and so can you. Seriously - I know the way most of us handle this. We pull out our little planner at the end of a session, look at our client, and say, “So! When would you like to come back?” And the back and forth begins. There’s a better way, y’all. And your clients will love it as much as you do. Give this a listen. ~Wendy P.S. Have you shared your review yet over on Apple Podcasts? If you do, not only will that make me very happy, but there’s a really good chance that I’ll read it as part of a future episode. #156. What? Therapy in a Wetsuit?!: A Fun (Inspiring!) Conversation With Gary Katz

7/1/2025
Question or comment? 🙋‍♀️ Send me a text message! Today, we’re going to get out of the office, out of our heads, and back into our bodies, my friends. Woot! 🥳 In this episode, I've brought back one of my favorite guests - the brave and oh-so-creative Gary Katz - for a deep dive into the magic of experiential work. Gary is a licensed therapist and founder of the Center for Intimacy Recovery, a group practice with services now in seven states around the U.S. He's also the most wonderfully creative human who takes therapy way beyond the traditional office setting. We're talking surf therapy in New York, boxing classes with clients, even summer camp for 80 year olds … But there's more. Gary has brought that same creative spirit he uses in his clinical work to the connections he has with colleagues, too. With his "Therapy Tribe", he’s created a whole community for mental health professionals that is equally creative - and fun! - with pickleball, salsa dancing, summer camps and Mexico retreats! (He thinks we therapists need more play in our lives. I think he’s right.) In this episode, you'll learn: physical exhaustionparticularly those with a history of abuse or traumacompletely transformed BEFOREbecause this is NOT something you do casuallysuper simpleincredibly powerful So, if you've ever had a little voice in your head whisper, "What if I tried something different with my clients?" - this episode is for you. Because maybe, just maybe, YOUR willingness to step out of your comfort zone is the exact medicine your clients need to step out of theirs. Give it a listen. ~Wendy xoxo P.S. So was I right? Did you love this? If so, could you give us a quick review or thumb’s up over on Apple Podcasts or Spotify? Thank you SO much! _______________ TODAY’S GUEST: Gary Katz is a psychotherapist and founder of The Center for Intimacy Recovery, centered in New York, which focuses primarily on intimacy and relationships. Without a sense of intimacy with oneself, people can’t fully experience intimacy with someone else. Our hearts are fragile so we develop strategies to keep them safe and avoid getting hurt.
