Don't Get Hacked! Compliance Rules With Shawn Thornton of Smart Biz IT

9/18/2025
In this episode of The ROCC Pod, we sit down with Shawn Thornton, founder of Smart Biz IT and former tech leader at Amazon and Ford, to unpack the growing importance of cybersecurity and compliance for small and mid-sized businesses. We open with a real-world horror story—Shawn walks us through how one of his Michigan-based clients was completely taken out by ransomware. Two facilities, thousands of hacked printers, a wiped customer database, destroyed emails, inaccessible websites—no backups, no recovery, over a million dollars in losses. It’s a sobering introduction to the stakes of not being prepared. After the wake-up call, we shift to get to know Shawn a bit more personally—his passion for barbecuing, cold smoking cheeses, and his undying loyalty to the Detroit Lions. The conversation is easygoing, but the subject matter stays serious as we transition back to the business of IT and compliance. Shawn breaks compliance down in simple terms—it's about proving that you're protecting your customer and business data. Whether it's strong passwords, verified backups, multi-factor authentication, or employee training, these small habits can be the difference between continuity and catastrophe. He emphasizes that compliance isn't just about avoiding trouble; it can actually become a revenue driver. Companies looking to secure government contracts, enterprise partnerships, or venture funding all need to demonstrate cybersecurity maturity. Compliance is no longer optional—it's a credential. We talk about what Smart Biz IT offers: full-service IT support with a lens focused on compliance. From help desk and cloud backups to risk assessments and documentation, Shawn’s firm is helping businesses not only stay safe but grow. He shares another example of a client with a seven-figure deal on the table—except they couldn’t move forward without a SOC 2 attestation. Now, with Shawn’s help, they’re on track to be ready in time. The episode closes with Shawn reflecting on his move into entrepreneurship, the unique value Smart Biz iT brings to the market, and his great experience since joining the Royal Oak Chamber. We also get to learn that his favorite day of the year is NFL’s opening Sunday, and fall—complete with smoked meats and fantasy football—is his favorite season. The Robots Aren't Taking Over: Codebaby's Christine Chubenko

9/4/2025
In this episode of The ROCC Pod, we dive deep into the world of emotionally intelligent AI with Christine Chubenko of CodeBaby. Jon hosts solo while Lisais away, and together with Christine, we explore how AI is reshaping business efficiency, customer interaction, and our daily digital experience. We begin by learning about CodeBaby, a platform that powers emotionally intelligent avatars capable of handling repetitive customer service tasks on behalf of businesses. These avatars go far beyond the likes of "Clippy" — they can smile, laugh, and emulate human responses, allowing businesses to provide 24/7 assistance that reflects their brand tone and values. Christine emphasizes that users maintain full control over their data and avatar behavior, which can evolve over time as the business grows or shifts. Christine shares examples from retail and healthcare. In stores, avatars answer common customer questions, freeing up human staff to focus on higher-priority tasks. In medical practices, avatars or even holograms can offer patients a safe space to ask questions — particularly beneficial for older patients who may hesitate to speak directly to doctors. ("But they're so busy!") As we discuss the broader AI landscape, Christine explains her career roots in computer science and AI, dating back to the 1990s. While the foundation of AI has remained rooted in pattern recognition and statistical models like k-nearest neighbor, the scale and sophistication of modern AI have exploded. She debunks the myth that AI is sentient — emphasizing that despite the human-like responses, these systems are still just machines built by humans with clear limitations and no true consciousness. We explore how AI is already part of our everyday lives through Siri, Alexa, social media algorithms, smart appliances, and personalized streaming suggestions. Christine argues that AI’s role is to reduce tedious tasks — not replace humans entirely. Jobs that require emotional nuance, tactile presence, or creativity (like nurses or preschool teachers) remain well out of AI’s reach. Meanwhile, automation can fill gaps where businesses struggle to hire, like in food service or basic admin roles. Christine also breaks down what makes AI emotionally intelligent: prompt engineering. It’s not just about asking a question; it’s about asking it the right way, setting the tone, and defining the persona you want the AI to emulate. For instance, telling ChatGPT to answer as a cardiovascular surgeon or in a humorous tone drastically alters the output. To close, Christine encourages listeners who are curious about AI to simply sign up for a tool like ChatGPT and ask, “Where do I start?” That simple first step leads to powerful learning. She reminds us that while AI may seem intimidating, it’s just another tool — and it’s one we can all learn to wield effectively. From Farm to Furnace: Chris Downs' Career Journey

7/24/2025
In this episode of The ROCC Pod, we sit down with Matt Traitses, General Manager, and Chris Downs, HVAC Manager at Cregger Plumbing, Heating, Cooling, and Electrical. With summer in full swing, we focus on home comfort, efficiency, and cost savings through HVAC upgrades and maintenance. Chris breaks down how federal tax credits and utility rebates can save homeowners over $2,000 when replacing outdated systems, thanks to incentives like $600 tax credits for furnaces and air conditioners, and rebates from gas and electric companies. These savings are immediate and impactful, especially for those living in older homes with lower efficiency units. We dive into safety as a top priority, particularly the risks of carbon monoxide from improperly maintained furnaces. Chris emphasizes regular maintenance—including annual tune-ups and filter changes—to protect both the system’s longevity and the home's air quality. He also discusses add-ons like UV lights and air purifiers that actively kill bacteria and viruses in the air. The conversation shifts to the importance of proper system installation. While many homeowners obsess over brands, Chris reminds us that installation quality matters more than the brand name. An incorrectly sized or poorly installed unit leads to inefficiency, noise, and higher long-term costs. Sizing the unit correctly through load calculations ensures better performance and comfort. We also hear about Chris’s unique journey from owning a cattle and crop farm to managing HVAC sales and system design. His career transition led him to a leadership role at Cregger, where he now mentors technicians and helps expand their HVAC services. Matt notes that Chris is the company's first-ever HVAC Manager, brought in during a period of strategic growth. Cregger’s recent involvement with the Royal Oak Chamber is also discussed. They've joined community events like the Summer Concert Series and Halloween festivities, with plans to donate an HVAC system to a local veteran in need. Community service remains a cornerstone of their mission, from food banks to supporting animal shelters. As the episode wraps, we ask our signature “fishbowl” questions. Chris shares his one regret—wishing he'd entered the trades earlier—and Matt reflects on reviving a Greek family tradition involving a New Year’s dish and a lucky coin. MSGCU's Commitment to Financial Literacy

6/19/2025
In this episode, we sit down with Angela King and Jolene Plotzke from Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union to talk about the importance of financial literacy and their unique approach to serving the community. After some lighthearted conversation about dogs, music, and family, we dive into the core topic—money, debt, and financial education. Angela and Jolene explain that many people, even high earners, often lack basic budgeting skills. This disconnect leads to financial issues like unmanageable mortgage payments and maxed-out credit cards. At MSGCU, the focus isn’t on sales or fees—it’s about building trust, offering support, and improving financial well-being. Angela shares her role as a branch manager and certified financial counselor, helping members develop personalized plans to manage debt and set financial goals. Jolene, a former music teacher turned financial educator, emphasizes how transferable teaching skills help her connect with people in workshops and one-on-one sessions. We learn about MSGCU's extensive community outreach efforts. From customized presentations for police and fire departments to classroom education for students, they tailor their financial literacy programs to the needs of each audience. Their approach is personal and word-of-mouth driven, avoiding flashy marketing in favor of real connections. They offer a digital portal with self-paced modules and direct scheduling for those looking to bring financial education to their organization. The conversation touches on broader cultural shifts too—how financial conversations are becoming less taboo, and the role both Angela and Jolene play in fostering those discussions. In a touching moment, Angela and Jolene share the personal challenges they've stayed committed to—Angela’s lifelong mission to connect through financial counseling and Jolene’s dedication to mentoring her children into financially independent adults. This episode makes a strong case for why financial literacy is not just important—it’s transformative when done right, and MSGCU is clearly leading that charge. The Power of Mentorship and the Pivot to Real Estate

6/5/2025
In this episode of the ROCC Pod, we sit down with Benson Onyegbula, a first-generation Nigerian-American who shares his transition from finance into real estate and the lessons he's learned along the way. We begin by exploring how Benson's early curiosity and drive landed him mentorships with top executives at Trion Solutions while still a junior at Oakland University. That curiosity paid off when a financial advisor offered him a job post-graduation, sparking his initial passion for the financial world. Benson describes how he dove into finance, earning multiple licenses and working with Ameriprise, where he advised small and mid-sized companies on retirement planning and tax-efficient strategies. His work not only provided insight into the financial structures of companies but also highlighted how many successful clients held significant real estate assets. That realization pushed him to start investing in real estate himself. He first dipped his toes into single-family properties but quickly saw the long-term value of multifamily investments, thanks to the guidance of his mentor, Brittany. Her example—transforming a boutique motel on Mackinac Island into a million-dollar asset via Airbnb—illustrated the power of leveraging net operating income to build wealth. So Benson began expanding his knowledge base through platforms like the BiggerPockets podcast and STR Wealth, all while continuing to be a networking machine. We talk about the importance of mentorship, and Benson shares how a chance meeting at an open house led to his current mentor. Their first conversation around rental arbitrage—a strategy where you lease properties for the purpose of short-term rentals—set the tone for a lasting business relationship. He credits this mentorship, along with a trusted network of subject matter experts including mortgage brokers, CPAs, and title companies, for giving him a strong foundation in his new career. Now licensed with Hub Real Estate Solutions in Plymouth, Benson has officially transitioned to full-time real estate consulting. He emphasizes how his financial background helps him offer a holistic perspective to clients, especially in retirement planning involving real estate. Outside of work, Benson enjoys being in nature, particularly in places like Cranbrook Gardens and downtown Royal Oak, and he’s a fan of real estate TV shows—even if they take some creative liberties. Throughout the episode, we highlight the importance of mentorship, initiative, and strategic investment planning—reminding listeners that curiosity and courage can open the door to life-changing opportunities. Roofing, Renovations, and Baseball Dreams with Chance Jennings of Tittle Brothers

5/22/2025
In this episode of the ROCC Pod, we sit down with Chance Jennings from Tittle Brothers Construction. We kick things off by discussing a major highlight for Tittle Brothers: being an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred Contractor, a prestigious designation held by only about 15 companies nationwide. This certification ensures homeowners’ warranties are backed by Owens Corning, even if anything happens to the original contractor. Chance shares a bit about his personal life, including the excitement of expecting his second child in October and the joys of parenting his four-year-old daughter. We also learn about his passion project—visiting all 30 Major League Baseball stadiums. So far, he’s visited three parks and hopes to squeeze in more trips before the new baby arrives. We move into Chance’s role as the Marketing Manager for Tittle Brothers, where he’s been for five years. He tells us about the variety of services Tittle Brothers offers, including roofing, siding, gutters, masonry, additions, decks, and overhangs. Roofing projects can usually be completed within a day, while more extensive work like additions or bathrooms takes longer. Currently, roofing projects are scheduled about two weeks out, siding about two to three months, and bathrooms are booked through the end of the year. We highlight the value Tittle Brothers brings to homeowners, especially with their financing options, which make large repairs more accessible without heavy upfront costs. Chance explains how their referral program can even help offset loan payments. He also stresses that waiting for home improvement costs to drop is rarely a winning strategy, especially in the post-COVID economy where prices tend to only climb. Tittle Brothers has expanded with a second location in Berkley, Michigan, complementing their Brownstown office. He shares current promotions like 50% off roofing labor and $2,000 off full siding or window jobs. Their service area extends about two hours from each office, covering a large portion of Michigan. We also hear about this Ohio-native's love for Coney Island breakfast. It’s clear he’s embraced Michigan culture wholeheartedly. As Chance juggles work, family, and his ballpark quest, his commitment to quality construction and community shines through. 5/8/2025
This week's guests are Nick Dane and Jaime Rowland of Citizens State Bank, who now lead ROYAL, the Young Professionals group within the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce. They walk us through how the group has grown since the pandemic and what’s made that growth possible. We hear about how they were tapped as young leaders within Citizens State Bank (a proud Chamber member!) to help rejuvenate ROYAL and how that responsibility has aligned with their professional strengths—Nick in finance and lending, and Jaime in marketing and outreach. Nick shares how his career took him from Michigan to a high-stakes finance job in New York before COVID shifted his priorities and brought him back home. Jaime reflects on how her passion for community-building and her role at CSB make her a natural fit for this kind of work. They both agree that the group has evolved quickly, learning on the fly, and seeing great results—monthly meetings are drawing strong attendance, and new faces regularly become familiar ones. Word-of-mouth momentum is strong, with people attending events without much promotion. We also learn about the demographics of the group—primarily entrepreneurs, small business owners, salespeople, and Royal Oak professionals looking to expand their networks and give back. Events like the upcoming “Pitch and Mingle” baseball mixer (June 25) and the May 22 HopCat after-hours show how ROYAL mixes fun with networking. ROYAL is inclusive, welcoming, and easy to join. From Science to Service: How Christina DeGregory’s Academic Background Helps Her In Health Care

4/24/2025
In this episode of the ROCC Pod, we sit down with Christina DeGregory, an independent insurance broker with Health Markets, to talk through her journey from a biology major (!) to health insurance and how she’s using her science background to educate and empower clients. Christina shares that she holds a master’s in biological sciences and once worked as a teaching assistant in cell biology and microbiology. That experience, she explains, helped shape her ability to explain complex topics—like health insurance—in clear, simple terms. She’s now channeling that same teaching energy into her role as a broker, with a personal motto: “Insurance is hard, let me make it easier for you.” We talk through how she transitioned out of academia and into insurance after facing a stagnant job market post-grad school. What drew her to this career was the opportunity to connect with people, educate them, and help them understand their options. As an independent broker, Christina runs her own business under the Health Markets umbrella, helping individuals find coverage through the Affordable Care Act. She explains open enrollment, special enrollment periods, and how certain life events can trigger eligibility to enroll outside the standard window. We also touch on the most common challenges her clients face, such as confusion around deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums. Christina emphasizes her goal of making sure clients truly understand their coverage, payments, and what to expect in case of hospitalization or routine care. She works primarily with people who aren’t eligible for employer-sponsored insurance—1099 workers, part-time employees, or those in between jobs—and particularly helps those in lower-income brackets who may qualify for subsidized or even $0 monthly premium plans. Christina also works with supplemental insurance like dental, vision, and indemnity plans that offer payouts for accidents, illnesses, or hospital stays. She outlines how these offerings can protect against crushing medical debt, especially for vulnerable populations. Soon, she’ll also be licensed in Medicare to help retirees navigate yet another complicated health care system. Outside of work, Christina’s passionate about music and community. A long-time fan of Detroit’s EDM scene, she talks about attending Movement and Electric Forest every year. We also learn about her positive experience joining the Royal Oak Chamber and her love for being involved in local networking events. Throughout the episode, it’s clear Christina brings not only technical knowledge to her work but also empathy, patience, and a genuine passion for helping people navigate the confusing world of health insurance. Family, Fiber, and the Future: Mark Friday and the RJ Story

4/10/2025
In this episode of the ROCC Pod, we sit down with Mark Friday of RJ Telecommunications to explore how his company has grown from a family-run operation to a full-scale managed service provider. Mark walks us through the company’s origins, starting in 1996 and his joining in 2004 as a teenager. Back then, RJ focused mainly on physical phone systems, but with the rise of VoIP and the decline of traditional systems like Nortel, the company evolved. By 2013, they were developing their own phone software and expanding into managed internet services, fiber, and network infrastructure. We learn how this growth led RJ to become a true MSP, offering IT services, cybersecurity, and full network management while maintaining a commitment to transparency. Mark emphasizes his mission to grow honestly, in contrast to other IT vendors who often sell fear-based solutions or unnecessary services. His goal is to provide practical, effective, and affordable tech solutions—especially for fellow small businesses. Mark also shares his experiences working with family, explaining that trust has been critical to the company’s culture and customer service. His older cousin, who once babysat him, now plays a key role in the business. As RJ has scaled from three to nine employees in just two years, he’s been able to delegate roles while ensuring the customer-first approach remains central to their work. Looking ahead, Mark is focused on growing RJ’s presence in the IT space with integrity. He wants to build a team that can run day-to-day operations, freeing him up to engage more with the community, attend networking events, and explore interests in real estate investment. He shares his past ventures, including flipping a house and running a sandwich shop and video store before returning to RJ and becoming the sole owner. We also touch on RJ’s approach to security camera installations, which is guided by customer needs and budget, avoiding one-size-fits-all solutions. Mark speaks positively about his experience with the Royal Oak Chamber and how its lively, supportive environment has helped RJ build local relationships. Christine Scott's Journey to Becoming a Plumber

3/27/2025
In this episode of the ROCC Pod, we sit down with Christine Scott from Paul Scott Plumbing to talk about her journey in the plumbing industry, the importance of clean water, and the value of careers in the trades. Christine shares how she transitioned from the car business to plumbing after meeting her husband, Paul, and how she eventually became a licensed journeyman and contractor to help run the family business. After Paul's passing in 2016, she took over operations, continuing the legacy with the help of her two sons, who are now licensed master plumbers. We discuss the growing demand for skilled tradespeople and how plumbing offers a rewarding career path without the burden of student loan debt. Christine emphasizes the need for both men and women in the trades and actively mentors young professionals. She also highlights the importance of maintaining clean and safe water, referencing the ongoing presence of lead water lines in communities and the impact of the Flint water crisis. She advises homeowners to install water filtration systems, not just for drinking water but for household use as well. Real estate plays a big role in plumbing concerns, and Lisa shares her experience with buyers who assume city water is always safe. Christine stresses the importance of sewer inspections before purchasing a home, as unexpected repairs can cost tens of thousands of dollars. She explains the value of sewer scopes, which Paul Scott Plumbing provides for $450, and preventative maintenance like hydro jetting to keep pipes clear. Beyond plumbing, Christine shares her love for scuba diving, describing her experiences exploring the underwater world, including a recent trip to Hawaii where she swam with manta rays. We wrap up with a lighthearted fishbowl question about fashion trends, where Christine reveals her appreciation for vintage 50s styles. The Royal Oak Sandlot League is Back!

3/13/2025
Today on The ROCC Pod, we sit down with Kyle Vandeventer from the Royal Oak Sandlot League to talk about baseball, softball, and community engagement. Kyle shares how the league, which has been a staple in Royal Oak since 1959, continues to provide affordable, high-quality youth sports opportunities for kids aged 4 to 18. With roughly 1,000 athletes participating annually, the league is powered entirely by volunteers dedicated to fostering a love for the game. Kyle's journey into the league began when his then-four-year-old son wanted to play baseball. He initially signed up as an assistant coach, but after voicing concerns about areas that needed improvement, he was invited to step up and make changes himself. Four years later, he plays multiple roles, from coaching to managing registration, marketing, and social media. A major focus for the league is keeping costs low while maintaining a high-quality experience. Registration fees start at just $60 for tee-ball and cap at $160 for older players. Sponsorships and fundraising efforts help keep expenses manageable, ensuring that all kids, regardless of financial background, have a chance to play. Businesses can sponsor teams, with their logos featured on jerseys that kids wear around town, offering great local exposure. Beyond affordability, the league emphasizes three core principles: fun, safety, and learning. Starting kids as young as four allows them to develop fundamental skills and a love for the game early. The league also partners with the Royal Oak Leprechauns, giving players access to special events and games. Kyle also shares his background in the beer industry, where he spent 15 years before transitioning to financial planning. He reflects on how fatherhood has taught him patience and laughs about his self-proclaimed Olympic-level laundry skills. For those looking to get involved as sponsors, coaches, or volunteers, all information is available at royaloaksandlot.com. Registration for summer baseball is open until April 1, with late sign-ups accepted afterward. Practices start in late March or early April, with games running through July. We wrap up with a fun discussion about balancing work, family, and volunteer commitments, and, of course, some hopeful thoughts about the upcoming Detroit Tigers season. IT with a Customer Service Focus: Cinch IT's Alex Bartell

2/26/2025
Today, we sit down with Alex Bartell from Cinch I.T., a new Royal Oak Chamber member. Right away, Alex shares his unique talent for impressions, though he keeps them for in-person encounters—so if you see him at an event, be sure to ask! He also recounts a hilarious story of accidentally taking a ferry into Canada- you've got to hear this. Moving into business, Alex explains that Cinch I.T. is a franchise, started by his partner Josh Fett. Josh initially sought sales team members but ultimately realized he needed a business strategist. That’s where Alex came in. Together, they’ve been working to expand the company by focusing on customer service first, believing that while technical skills can be taught, strong communication and problem-solving abilities set them apart. Speed is another key factor. The industry average for IT response time is four hours, but Cinch I.T. boasts an impressive 11-minute average over the last three years. Their ideal client ranges from 10 to 100 employees, where they can offer either full-service IT support or co-managed services alongside existing IT teams. Beyond troubleshooting, they emphasize consulting, ensuring that IT strategies align with business growth plans. Alex also shares ambitious goals for 2025, aiming to add 560 new users to their client base. The Chamber has already been a valuable resource, and he’s enjoyed engaging with its networking groups like ROYAL (young professionals) and N1. For those interested in working with Alex and Cinch I.T., he’s active on LinkedIn and can be reached directly at alex.bartel@cinchit.com. Daisy Blue's Lightning Fast Wedding Picture Turnaround Times

2/13/2025
In this episode of the ROCC Pod, we sit down with Amy Claeys, owner of Daisy Blue Photography, to discuss her journey into wedding photography, her unique approach to capturing special moments, and how she ensures a stress-free experience for her clients. Amy shares that her love for photography started with a simple point-and-shoot camera after the birth of her first child in 2001. As she honed her skills, she eventually found herself photographing bands and later, somewhat reluctantly, shooting her first wedding in 2010. That experience sparked a passion, leading her to pursue wedding photography full-time in 2015. Today, she focuses solely on weddings, providing couples with a highly personalized experience from start to finish. One of the standout aspects of Amy’s business is her incredibly fast turnaround time. She provides a preview gallery of 25–30 images by the Monday after the wedding, with the full gallery delivered within 30 days. Unlike many photographers who simply send a link, she personally walks her clients through their photos and helps design their wedding albums, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable process. Beyond digital photography, Amy also offers a rare and artistic service—handmade film prints developed in a traditional darkroom. This process, which involves physically developing and printing images, provides couples with a timeless keepsake unlike anything in the digital age. Amy explains that her role on a wedding day extends far beyond just taking pictures. She often acts as a problem solver, a calming presence, and even a "protector" for brides who might need a discreet way to step away from stressful situations. Whether it’s whisking a bride away from an overbearing relative or making sure the timeline stays on track, Amy ensures the day runs smoothly. We also learn about Amy’s ties to the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce, which she joined nearly a decade ago. She credits the Chamber for helping her grow her business and loves supporting fellow members, even collaborating with Quix Chocolate in Ferndale to create custom-branded treats for her clients. The conversation wraps up with Amy emphasizing the importance of communication—both in life and in business. Being able to listen, understand, and express oneself effectively can make all the difference in personal and professional relationships. Viero, meaning "faith" in Ukrainian, offers a bespoke experience for brides, emphasizing handcrafted, customizable gowns. Every dress is made in their European atelier, featuring exquisite details such as hand-beading and intricate craftsmanship. The store also carries Milla Nova gowns, a rising star in bridal fashion, exclusive to Viero in Michigan. Michelle and Grace highlight Viero’s one-on-one appointment model, which they affectionately call the "fairy godmother experience." This personalized service ensures each bride feels empowered and radiant. They advise brides to order dresses at least eight months before the wedding to accommodate the six-month production timeline. The discussion delves into current bridal trends, including basque waist gowns and pearl-adorned dresses, both popular for their romantic appeal. Michelle and Grace share practical tips on choosing the right gown size and managing alterations, reminding brides not to stress about achieving unrealistic body goals before the wedding. Mastering Social Media and Video with JAC Digital Media’s Jordanna Cheifetz

12/19/2024
Today, Jon and Lisa are talking social media and video (and dogs) with Jordanna Cheifetz, the founder of JAC Digital Media. She shares her journey of establishing a thriving business that specializes in creating engaging social media content. She explains her unique "content days," where she works with clients to produce multiple high-quality videos efficiently and stress-free. These sessions are designed to empower clients with confidence, ensuring their personalities shine through to their audiences. Jordanna's inspiration for starting JAC Digital Media in 2017 was twofold: a need to pivot her career and recognizing a gap in the market for comprehensive digital services that include content creation, copywriting, and audience engagement. She also navigates the complexities of operating her business across two countries, balancing her Canadian roots with her current base in Michigan. We talk about the growing importance of video content in social media. Jordanna emphasizes the critical role of the first three seconds in grabbing viewers’ attention and the shift from polished, manicured posts to authentic, relatable content. Video allows businesses to connect with their audience at the viewer's own pace, building trust and familiarity over time. Both Lisa and Jon share their own experiences with video, highlighting its power as a long-term engagement tool. Jordanna also talks about her workshops, where she teaches business owners how to optimize social platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram, and Facebook. She plans to expand into more specialized topics, such as video editing. When asked about her services, Jordanna recommends her affordable "content day" package as an excellent starting point for businesses. Nikunj Jain and Tahura Holly of Corqueboard

12/5/2024
In this episode of the ROCC Pod, we meet Tahura Holly and Nikunj Jain, founders of Corqueboard, a digital advertising platform designed to replace traditional cork boards in local businesses. Tahura shares how her time in India inspired her business journey; after moving there in 2017 and immersing herself in the jewelry trade, she returned to Michigan and launched Festive Essentials, a brick-and-mortar store in Hamtramck specializing in Indian jewelry. As she promoted her store, Tahura noticed idle screens in local shops, which sparked the idea for Corqueboard—a network of digital screens where local businesses can easily upload and display ads, specials, and announcements. Nikunj brought his technical expertise to the venture, helping create an efficient and user-friendly platform for business owners. Corqueboard operates through a simple setup: a small device (similar to an Amazon Fire Stick) connects to a screen, enabling businesses to display dynamic content that can be managed with a QR code. This ease of use, including the ability to upload content directly from a smartphone, means even non-tech-savvy business owners can take full advantage. With Corqueboard, businesses like restaurants or retailers can monetize their screens by selling ad space to other businesses, turning idle screens into passive revenue generators. Pricing is customizable, so each business can set its own ad rates, ranging from free community promotions to premium ad placements. The couple discusses how their complementary personalities enhance their business partnership, though they face typical challenges of working together. They rely on honesty and clear communication, blending Nikunj’s outgoing nature with Tahura’s introverted approach to manage both their personal and business dynamics. They credit their different perspectives for helping refine Corqueboard’s user experience, with Tahura advocating for simplicity and accessibility in the interface. Tahura and Nikunj’s recent addition to the Royal Oak Chamber has been met with enthusiasm, particularly with the launch of Corqueboard Mobile. This battery-powered, weatherproof digital sign offers a modern alternative to traditional A-frame boards, allowing businesses to display eye-catching digital menus or promotions outside. They’ve already seen local interest, especially from businesses seeking innovative ways to attract customers. Listeners interested in Corqueboard can find more information at corqueboard.com or contact Nikunj directly at (313) 378-3893. Both Tahura and Nikunj are excited to help local businesses in Michigan thrive by enhancing visibility through Corqueboard’s growing digital network. Yoga for Every Body: Meet Lindsay Madison of Visions Incorporated

11/21/2024
In this episode of the ROCC Pod, we connect with Lindsay Madison, founder of Visions Incorporated, a yoga studio with a unique focus on accessibility and community inclusivity. Lindsay shares her inspiring journey, starting with her early career in retail management in Chicago, where she rose to a high-powered role at Bloomingdale’s by age 21. However, her career path shifted unexpectedly when she experienced a sudden and rare loss of hearing due to a sinus infection. This challenging health event ultimately led her to yoga, which became both a personal refuge and, later, her profession. After years of practicing and teaching yoga, Lindsay returned to Michigan, where her journey took on new meaning when her mother was diagnosed with lung cancer. Lindsay guided her mother through gentle exercises and breathing techniques post-surgery, which reinforced her mission to make yoga accessible to people of all backgrounds and health conditions. Today, her mother, a cancer survivor with one lung, regularly participates in Lindsay’s classes, embodying resilience and inspiring others in the process. Visions Incorporated, Lindsay’s studio, offers both in-person and virtual classes that cater to a wide array of needs and levels. Classes range from brief, targeted sessions to longer, full-length practices, available through Zoom, on-demand, and free videos on YouTube. Lindsay provides options for all, including those who may face financial challenges, and she offers a variety of packages and a “pay later” option for live classes. Her approach is deeply personal; she emphasizes the physical and mental benefits of yoga, helping participants build strength, calm their minds, and practice breathwork to manage daily stress. Lindsay also teaches chair yoga at senior communities, aiming to expand this offering through a 2025 goal of training other instructors in her inclusive teaching style. For those new to yoga, Lindsay reassures that flexibility and experience aren’t prerequisites; her classes are about self-connection and adapting yoga to individual needs, creating an inviting space for anyone interested in starting their practice. Lindsay credits the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce for helping her make valuable connections within the community and expresses excitement about growing her impact through these networks. For those interested in learning more, she can be reached via her website, visionsincorporated.com, and on social media, where she responds personally to inquiries. In summary, Lindsay’s story is one of resilience, adaptability, and community spirit, and her dedication to accessible yoga has fostered an inclusive environment where everyone—from cancer survivors to yoga novices—can find their place on the mat.
