"Peter Asher: A Life In Music"/David Jacks [Episode 134]
5/26/2023
David Jacks is this episode's guest to discuss his book Peter Asher: A Life in Music. It covers the life and career of English guitarist, singer, manager, and record producer Peter Asher, who was one-half of the 60s pop duo Peter and Gordon before going on to a successful career as a manager and record producer. Asher has worked with a long list of legendary artists including James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Steely Dan’s Donald Fagan, Diana Ross, Cher, Neil Diamond, Randy Newman, Kenny Loggins, Morrissey, Ed Sheeran, and Steve Martin. David spoke with Peter himself for the book along with over 100 artists, friends, and colleagues and he’s here to share some of the fantastic stories, including why there are two versions of James Taylor's "Carolina In My Mind" and if it's true Mike Myers created his look for Austin Powers on Peter Asher.

"Don’t Call It Hair Metal: Art in the Excess of ’80s Rock"/Sean Kelly [Episode 132]
5/15/2023
The 1980s. It was the era of excess. Bigger is better. A little just ain’t enough. It was a time when the musical and cultural ideals of rebellion and freedom of the great rock and roll of the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s were taken to dizzying heights of neon excess. For those old enough to have lived, partied and rocked during that decade, we look back on those days fondly. But time hasn’t always been kind to the artists and bands of that gold and platinum era. The music often overlooked and ignored by critics with the focus more on what the bands looked like and less on the songs they wrote and recorded.
In his book Don’t Call It Hair Metal: Art in the Excess of ’80s Rock, author Sean Kelly sets out to give these artists the respect they deserve. He analyzes the sonic evolution, musical diversity and artistic intention of ‘80s commercial hard rock through interviews with members of Twisted Sister, Def Leppard, Poison, Whitesnake, Ratt, Skid Row, Quiet Riot Guns N’ Roses, Dokken, Mr. Big and more and he’ll share some of what’s in his book in this episode!

"To Live Is To Die: The Life and Death of Metallica's Cliff Burton"/Joel McIver [Episode 130]
5/4/2023
Author Joel McIver is back with a revised edition of To Live Is to Die: The Life and Death of Metallica's Cliff Burton. In the book Robb Flynn of Machine Head calls, “One of the best biographies you’ll ever read” you'll get the story behind Metallica’s original bassist Cliff Burton.
Cliff led the band from garage thrash to sophisticated, progressive heights thanks in large part to his songwriting ability and phenomenal bass skills on the band’s first three studio albums, including the masterpiece Master of Puppets from 1986. Sadly, Cliff's life came to an early end. He was just 24 when he died in a tour bus crash in Sweden on September 27th, 1986. Following his passing, Metallica went on to massive global success but even they admit they’ve never pushed the creative envelope as radically as they had during the first four years of their career.
To coincide with the 40th anniversary of Metallica’s debut album Kill ‘Em All, McIver’s revised and updated edition of To Live Is To Die [originally published in 2009] adds a new chapter that looks at Cliff’s legacy from a fresh perspective and includes commentary from current Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo and Aquaman star Jason Momoa as well as an eyewitness account of the opening of the Cliff Burton Museum in Sweden in 2022. Testament bassist Steve Di Giorgio also adds his memories of meeting Cliff as a teen and then watching he and his band Metallica begin to take off.
We’ll talk about the life and career of Cliff Burton and some of what’s in this brand new edition of To Live Is To Die in this episode with author Joel McIver!

"Van Halen: Every Album, Every Song"/Morgan Brown [Episode 129]
4/27/2023
Van Halen is undoubtedly one of the most influential rock n' roll bands America has ever seen. In Van Halen: Every Album, Every Song (part of Sonicbond Publishing's "On Track" series), author Morgan Brown takes readers through the band's classic albums, charting their ascent from Sunset Strip amateurs to chart-topping arena rockers and beyond. Exploring the components of their music and its inspirations, as well as introducing us to the musicians behind the songs - including the late Edward Van Halen, the one-of-a-kind frontman David Lee Roth, and Sammy Hagar, who revitalized the band when he took the reins - this book is perfect for new fans and long-time fans. Hear what Morgan and I have to say about all the studio albums from the 1978 debut to 2012's A Different Kind Of Truth. "Eagles: Every Album, Every Song"/John Van der Kiste [Episode 127]
4/19/2023
John Van der Kiste is on the podcast to talk about his brand new book Eagles: Every Album, Every Song. As part of Sonicbond Publishing’s On Track series, this book covers the one of the best selling bands in music history.
Between 1972 and 1979, the Eagles soared to the top of the charts four times. A total of five number one singles, 18 singles reaching the top 40. Their 1976 album Hotel California has gone on to sell 26 million copies while Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) went on to become the highest selling album of the 20th century in the US with 26 million copies sold by 1999. In 2023, the number of copies sold is now up to 38 million. In 1994, the reunited Eagles released the live album Hell Freezes Over, which shot straight to #1 and has sold 9 million copies. Their 2007 seven-times platinum selling studio album Long Road Out of Eden would put the band back on the top of the charts once more thanks to five consecutive Top 40 singles on the adult contemporary charts. After the death of founding member Glenn Frey in 2016, the trio of Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit recruited Glenn’s son Deacon and Vince Gill and continued to perform the band’s iconic songs covered in this book by Van der Kiste. He details every track on each studio and live album along with originals and cover versions recorded by the band but never officially released.

"Judge This Book By Its Cover"/Ron Young of Little Caesar [Episode 125]
4/6/2023
Ron Young’s story is a roller coaster ride through the music business. His personal rise and fall began as the son of an abusive mother. But music would be his savior and hopes for a bright future ahead. As lead vocalist of the band Little Caesar, he shot to rock stardom thanks to being backed by a major record label and working with the biggest producer in music - Bob Rock. But then it all came crashing down. He dealt with bad timing, bad luck and those who said he just didn’t have “the right look”. Eventually he found his band crashing as quickly as it rose. That was followed by heroin addiction. He had hit rock bottom. Finally, Ron found sobriety and a musical resurrection and he’s here to tell his story. In this episode, Ron gets brutally honest about his battles with the music industry, bands who use pre-recorded backing tracks in concert, 90s bands and more!

"Twist: An American Girl"/Adele Bertei [Episode 124]
4/4/2023
Iconic underground rock and roll musician Adele Bertei tells her harrowing story of transforming trauma through art and it’s all told through the voice of Adele’s young alter ego Maddie Twist in her book Twist: An American Girl. One reviewer calls the book a dark, demented, horrific and a hilarious shot to the heart of American girlhood.
Adele survived a childhood many wouldn’t and only came out stronger. Dysfunctional parents, poverty, stints in the foster system, her struggles with her sexuality, living on the streets and troubles with the law. It’s a gripping story that draws you in and keeps you there right until the end. Adele will talk about the book and the real-life stories that end up in this book. I also asked Adele about her band The Bloods - the first rock and roll band of gay women who publicly came out, plus her work with Brian Eno, Thomas Dolby, Tears for Fears and more!

"Queensborough Rock"/Stephen Shaiken [Episode 122]
3/25/2023
Stephen Shaiken is here to talk about his rock and roll novel titled Queensborough Rock - the story of a young struggling rock and roll manager Jack Bernstein who lives in New York City.
It’s the year 1971. Jack doesn’t have a fancy office in Manhatten. He doesn’t have a flashy car and back stage passes. Instead, he works out of a basement apartment in working class Queens and drives around looking for hidden talent in a beat down Volvo. The talent he does steal gets stolen by Manhatten agents he calls “sharks”. To finance a demo tape for his top talent, he had to borrow from a loan shark and pawn a friend’s guitar. But the tape fails to land a deal and Jack is running out of chances. His last hope is an offer from a friendly Queens mobster. Jack is asked to manage his obnoxious nephew as best as he can. If he does, doors will open.
Stephen is a veteran writer of fiction, both short stories and novels and he says all of his work is based on his life, places he’s been and events he’s witnessed. So what was it that inspired this latest book Queensborough Rock? We’re about to find out!

"Tom Petty’s Southern Accents (33 1/3)"/Michael Washburn [Episode 120]
3/18/2023
Michael Washburn is our guest to talk about his book Tom Petty’s Southern Accents, part of the 33 1/3 series published by Bloomsbury Academic.
Tom Petty’s album Southern Accents was released on this month back in 1985. This is my personal favorite Petty album but this book isn’t one that praises everything about this particular Petty recording. It’s an honest assessment of the music, which Michael says is "a mix of classic rock songs mixed with nearly unlistenable 80s music".
Michael also gets into Petty’s use of the iconography of the American Confederacy, something Petty soon came to regret. But Michael also says Southern Accents is an important album for Petty; a pivot point in his career. I ask Michael about that and his examination of how the record both grew out of and reinforced enduring but flawed assumptions about Southern culture and the Lost Cause of the Confederacy. We also get into the songs recorded during the album sessions but left off, our favorite deep track from the album and more.

David Spero was one of the pioneering DJs of the then new FM format in radio, a free form limited only by the DJ's imagination. He left radio in 1973 to become the manager for Michael Stanley and would eventually go on to manage the biggest names in rock including Joe Walsh, Cat Stevens, Dickey Betts, Jesse Colin Young, Kenny Loggins, Richie Furay, Simon Kirke and Paul Rodgers of Bad Co., and many others. He's friends to as many famous rockers including Jackson Browne, Mark Farner, Al Kooper, and Harry Nilsson.
David is on the podcast to talk about his book A Life in The Wings: My Sixty Year Love Affair with Rock and Roll: A Memoir. It’s written by David and K Adrian Zonneville. The Dark Side Of Rock 'n' Roll w/ Chauncey Haworth, Lothar Tuppan & Mark Slade of Twisted Pulp Magazine [Ep. 117]
3/5/2023
Twisted Pulp is a monthly magazine that brings back all that we loved in the classic pulp magazines like Mad, Cracked and CARtoons and comics like Eerie, Heavy Metal and The Haunt of Fear. Packed with articles, non-fiction stories, comics, photos and amazing art work. It’s dark, mysterious, it’s humorous…it’s an absolute must monthly read.
I ask Mark, Chauncey and Lothar about the history of the magazine, how it all got started, what are the magazines and comics they read growing up. We talk horror films, the history of the occult in rock and roll and the origins of the legendary crossroads story. Did Robert Johnson sell his soul to the devil in exchange for musical brilliance? It turns out, this story didn’t originate with Robert Johnson at all.

"Lanegan"/Greg Prato on Singer Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees, Queens of the Stone Age)[Episode 116]
3/2/2023
Greg Prato is a returning guest to talk about his brand new book “Lanegan”. Mark Lanegan is among the greatest voices of grunge rock’s golden era. His unmistakable and instantly recognizable vocals can be heard on classic recordings on songs by Screaming Trees. He can also be heard on several songs by the band Queens of the Stone Age. He was a poet and an author of several popular books. Sadly, he endured addiction, hard living and health difficulties before passing away in February of 2022 at the age of 57.
Prato pays tribute to one of rock’s great poets and lyricists in this book. It features over 20 all-new interviews with Lanegan’s fellow collaborators, friends and admirers. He'll share some of those stories from the book in this interview including one about the Nirvana song Lanegan co-wrote the lyrics for but isn't credited. Which song is it and why wasn't Lanegan given credit? Find out in this episode!
