Both versions tell the story of a younger Father Merrin, traumatized survivor of WW2, and wandering archaeologist. He winds up in Africa, digging up a buried church on top of a buried temple, built to safeguard an ancient evil. Of course, things go wrong, people get possessed, and someone is in need of an exorcism.
