He knows firsthand what you are going through in your career. As a highly successful HR executive, he helped run a global company with nearly 2,000 employees. But there is one thing that always remains the same — you are a human trying to do your best in your role with what you’ve got to work with currently. Sometimes you need a safe place to turn where you can have your questions and concerns addressed, your fears and doubts resolved, and your confidence bolstered. E446 - Anne Fowler - From Haliburton to El Porvenir - Author of I’ve Worn Many Hats

11/9/2024
Episode 446 - Anne Fowler - From Haliburton to El Porvenir - Author of I’ve Worn Many Hats About the author Anne Fowler, only child of Audrey and Stewart Hamilton, was raised in Toronto where she attended Leaside High School and Toronto Western Hospital School of Nursing. In 1962 American Airlines beckoned her to Dallas, Texas and life in the sky as a flight attendant. Twice divorced, Anne first married a young minister from Louisiana and then long-time best friend Dr. Bob Fowler of Toronto. They raised a daughter and son who later produced a grandson and granddaughter. In 2001, Anne retired, closed her company, Hamilton Enterprises, and left behind a thirty year career in Human Resources. She relocated to El Progreso, Honduras to volunteer at a clinic where care is provided for patients who lack the funds to be treated elsewhere. During this time, Anne developed the Visiting Doctor program for international ophthalmologists, started the Healthy Living Education project in local elementary schools, and helped with a variety of clinic and community activities. In 2006, after purchasing property in the small north coast village of El Porvenir, she built Hamilton Benest House, a home providing accommodation for visiting dentists, doctors, teachers, and other volunteers. Her major program in 2021 is Phase Two of the Healthy Living Program. This annual dental program, conducted by two Canadian dental teams, provides dental care for over 1,000 elementary school students in the area. Anne’s programs continue to thrive and she has continued to develop community initiatives designed to improve the lives of Hondurans. Anne divides her year between El Porvenir and her Haliburton cottage north of Toronto. Book - I’ve Worn Many Hats Get ready to experience a roller coaster ride of emotions! Laughter, sadness, empathy, outrage. Canadian Anne Hamilton Fowler appeared to have it all. However, life is not always as idyllic as it seems and at age twenty a series of events almost destroyed her. Emerging from the wreckage she reinvented herself, started over, and proceeded to live on the edge with a risk-taking lifestyle. Then in 1993, an event experienced during a trip to Central America changed everything. “I’ve Worn Many Hats” is an inspirational read that demonstrates our human frailties, one’s ability to survive personal adversity, and how we can learn to forgive both ourselves and others. It is a story of redemption. Anne Fowler is a retired Canadian who divides the year between her Haliburton summer cottage and Central America. This memoir is her first book and all proceeds will go to support Anne’s ongoing humanitarian work in Honduras. https://thehighlander.ca/2022/11/17/fowler-recounts-a-life-of-adventure/ https://anne.honduranhope.net/ Support the show ___ https://livingthenextchapter.com/ podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/ Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks! https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

E445 - Judy Gruen - Bylines and Blessings - Writing is almost as essential as breathing

11/8/2024
Episode 445 - Judy Gruen - Bylines and Blessings - Writing is almost as essential as breathing I began my writing career in the health care field, and sold my first freelance humor pieces by age 22 to the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner, the scrappy underdog newspaper to the Los Angeles Times. Since then, I’ve written 5 books, including my memoirs Bylines and Blessings and The Skeptic and the Rabbi, both works of my heart. I’m an award-winning columnist for the Jewish Journal, where my work earned First Place in Commentary from the American Jewish Press Association’s Simon Rockower Awards, and Second Place for Book Reviews from the L.A. Press Club’s Southern California Journalism Awards, both in 2024. My work has also been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Chicago Tribune, Christian Science Monitor, Boston Globe, New York Daily News, Los Angeles Times, Aish.com, Jewish Action, Chabad.org, and many other outlets. I also love working with writers as a book coach, guiding them as they realize their visions of a professionally written and edited book. I’ve worked with writers on memoirs, as well as on Jewish philosophy, business communications, alternative health journeys, and more. To me, writing is almost as essential as breathing. It is a privilege and joy for me to be able to share my writing with a receptive audience. “To me, writing is almost as essential as breathing. E442 - Steve Hoffman - A Season For That - Lost and Found in the Other Southern France

11/5/2024
Episode 442 - Steve Hoffman - A Season For That - Lost and Found in the Other Southern France In this poignant, delicious memoir, American tax preparer and food writer Steve Hoffman tells the story of how he and his family move to the French countryside, where the locals upend everything he knows about food, wine, and learning how to belong. Steve Hoffman is a perfectly comfortable middle-aged Minnesotan man who has always been desperately, pretentiously in love with France, more specifically with the idea of France. To follow that love, he and his family move, nearly at random, to the small, rural, scratchy-hot village of Autignac in the south of the country, and he immediately thinks he’s made a terrible mistake. Life here is not holding your cigarette chest-high while walking to the café and pulling off the trick of pretending to be Parisian, it’s getting into fights with your wife because you won’t break character and introduce your very American family to the locals, who can smell you and your perfect city-French from a mile away. https://sjrhoffman.com/ Support the show ___ https://livingthenextchapter.com/ podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/

E441 - Jennifer Lang - Places We Left Behind, commitment and compromise, faith and family

11/4/2024
Episode 441 - Jennifer Lang - Places We Left Behind, commitment and compromise, faith and family An American-French-Israeli hybrid, I write about identity, language, home. While raising kids in the San Francisco Bay Area at the dawning of the internet, I worked as copy editor/editor/content writer for BabyCenter, PlanetRx, and many other now obsolete .coms. But I dreamed of seeing my name on paper, in print, eventually writing for Parenting, Parents, Natural Solutions, Scholastic, Woman’s Day, Real Simple. Then, in the early 2000s, something else caught my eye: the back-page essays. Who were these first-person voices and how did they tell such moving stories? Curious and on the opposite coast, I enrolled in a creative nonfiction class: one, which led to another, and then another, finally culminating in my MFA in Writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Thank you so much to each of my mentors for teaching me something different and dear, for bolstering me to walk this path as writer. When American-born Jennifer falls in love with French-born Philippe during the First Intifada in Israel, she understands their relationship isn’t perfect. Both 23, both Jewish, they lead very different lives: she’s a secular tourist, he’s an observant immigrant. Despite their opposing outlooks on two fundamental issues—country and religion—they are determined to make it work. For the next 20 years, they root and uproot their growing family, each longing for a singular place to call home. In Places We Left Behind, Jennifer puts her marriage under a microscope, examining commitment and compromise, faith and family while moving between prose and poetry, playing with language and form, daring the reader to read between the lines. Distributed through Ingram, the book is available on Vine Leaves Press store, Amazon, Bookshop, Barnes & Noble, and more. In a book club? E438 - Daniel Victor - Lawyer Turned Author Shares A Jewish Catholic Lovestory - The Evil Inclination

11/1/2024
Episode 438 - Daniel Victor - Lawyer Turned Author Shares A Jewish Catholic Lovestory - The Evil Inclination About the author Daniel Victor specializes in Jewish-themed fiction and has written three novels, two novellas and a collection of short fiction. The Evil Inclination is his first published novel. He practiced law for more than forty years, concentrating on international media transactions (including fifteen years as a senior executive for Sesame Street). He is a father, and grandfather, and lives in New York City with his wife, Ester Fuchs. Book - The Evil Inclination Lev Levitski, devoted son and upright young man, walks the path of Jewish observance without giving it a second thought. But one day in college, Lev encounters Angela Pizatto, a dark-haired knockout, and suddenly, what used to mean everything to him is no longer enough. Angela pulls Lev from a cloistered and prudish existence into a passionate romance that must remain a secret because she is Catholic and he is Jewish. As the young lovers gallivant throughout Brooklyn, and as their devotion to each other builds, they realize that they are headed toward a pivotal crossroad. Can they possibly overcome the seemingly insurmountable differences in their backgrounds? It is a question they must confront if they are ever to have a shared future. Layered into this love story are themes about identity and longing: how desire—what traditional Judaism calls the Evil Inclination of the title—can define who we think we are. It’s a novel not only about the challenge to balance the burdens of tradition against the power of passion, but also about the struggle to understand how the people we fall for can change us in profound and unexpected ways. https://www.daniel-victor.com Support the show ___ https://livingthenextchapter.com/ podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/

Episode 433 - Lincoln Rawlins - Soar To New Heights and Sprout New Ideas with our Young Author Guest Meet the author, Lincoln. Own your copy of the book about which Treehouse series author Andy Griffiths declared, “I love a good villain and how much more villainous can you get than Shade Man.” Reading his story out to a crowd of over 100 people was an experience Lincoln will never forget, but it became much more than that single event. The story of hope, teamwork, and combatting negative with positive and kindness came to life through his main character, Sprout, and the seed for what became Sprout’s Idea began to grow. Lincoln is proof that anyone can harness the power of story to make a difference in the world. It is his hope that anyone who reads Sprout’s Idea will be more conscious of the words they speak and their actions around others. Meet the illustrator, Cara. Cara is an illustrator and book designer who lives in her little house in Sydney, with her loving husband and two gorgeous dogs. Bringing stories to life is Cara’s passion, she has done it in many different forms. From skating with Disney on Ice with your favourite Disney friends, to working with The Wiggles to bring their joy to the world, and designing books with Scholastic Australia. Cara has had the privilege to be a storyteller and enjoys working with independent authors to illustrate their imaginings and help them tell their tales. E432 - Roxanne McCarty-O'Kane - Ignite Your Passion and Write Your Book, Ghost Writing and Coaching

10/18/2024
Episode 432 - Roxanne McCarty-O'Kane - Ignite Your Passion and Write Your Book, Ghost Writing and Coaching I am a qualified journalist who has written for a number of newspapers, magazines and e-zines and am what you would call a jack of all trades. I ‘published’ my first book when I was in my final year of primary school. It was aptly called School Journal Part 4 Number 2 and had a strong ocean theme, with short stories, articles and poetry about sea life. It featured a cardboard cover that held stapled paper pages and this was the first and only time I have ever accompanied my words with illustrations (and for good reason…). An avid bookworm beforehand, this project earned me an A++ and provided the initial spark for a future career in writing. Rain, hail, or shine, they always received their papers and being in the land of the long white cloud, it often meant arriving home from deliveries soaked-through. Fast forward to today and I have been a professional storyteller since 2007. My first era was as a qualified print media journalist. My second era as an award-winning nonfiction book ghostwriter and writing mentor began in 2018. Since then, I have had the privilege of assisting people of all ages and all walks of life to showcase their expertise or share their incredible life stories in books that are changing the world. I have helped each and every one of them move through the perceived challenges that prevent many from taking the first steps to authorship. Helping people to find their spark and become brave enough to share it with the world is my fuel. Guiding people to find their voice and share their message in a powerful way that connects and transforms is my why. Processing large volumes of information and a lifetime worth of stories is my passion. Providing guidance and structured order to the myriad ideas buzzing around in the mind of an aspiring author is my gift. Making ghostwriting clients feel safe during my interviews (and knowing which questions to prompt them with) is my superpower. Whether it’s ‘How to make $1 million’ or ‘My journey through breast cancer’, every book has the potential to resonate deeply with people if it is crafted in the right way and written from the heart. I look forward to supporting you in any way you need to get the story off your heart and into the world, where it can serve, change lives, inspire, educate and even give your bank account a healthy boost! https://www.roxannewriter.com.au/ https://www.roxannewriter.com.au/shop/books/ Support the show ___ https://livingthenextchapter.com/ podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/

E431 - Kathy Bolte - Ringo's Rainbow Journey, A Memoir of Our Border Collie's Return to His Soul Family

10/16/2024
Episode 431 - Kathy Bolte - Ringo's Rainbow Journey, A Memoir of Our Border Collie's Return to His Soul Family Kathy Bolte is an International Yoga Teacher, Mantra Meditation Teacher, Kīrtan Musician, Retreat Leader, and facilitator of Women’s Wisdom Circles. She is a featured writer for Elephant Journal, an online publication dedicated to the mindful life. An avid mountain biker, Kathy hits the bike trails of Southern California at least twice a week. She loves working with her two Border Collies in the extraordinarily fun and challenging sport of dog agility. She lives in Riverside, California with her husband, their three dogs, and their 19-year-old cat. Book: Ringo's Rainbow Journey: A Memoir of Our Border Collie's Return to His Soul Family - Kathy’s husband, George, yearned for a Border Collie. This is the story of the birth and life of their beloved Ringo, the transition out of his body and rebirth as little Nina, a female Border Collie. As Ringo, and their matriarchal cat, Solo, faced health challenges and moved toward their end-of-life, Kathy and George were referred to Amanda Reister, a gifted pet communicator, to learn how best to care for their aging pets. Suddenly, everything changed. The conversations they’ve had with each of their pets, through Amanda, were nothing short of miraculous and completely changed their paradigm. The wisdom, joy, and depth of understanding revealed caused them to view each pet as the uniquely wise being they truly are. It was Ringo, who urged Kathy to write his memoir. Through Amanda he shared his important life lessons for us humans. Bodies come and go, but the Soul is eternal. Gender fluidity is natural and normal. Soul Families are real. Return to them if you can. And the most important lesson of all, which is to simply love one another. https://www.ringosrainbowjourney.com/ Yoga website: http://www.kathybolteyoga.com/ Link to my writing: https://linktr.ee/KathyBolte Social Media: https://www.facebook.com/kathy.bolte.3/ https://www.instagram.com/kathybolte/?hl=en YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@kirtangirl Support the show ___ https://livingthenextchapter.com/ podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/
