Through the Attic Door - Sean’s Magical Journey

Daryl P Depass

I was headed to a new beginning. A chance to do everything the way I had always wanted to. A whole new hope. With a smile on my face, I drove down to Waycross. The journey was long, but my red Ford pickup ate up the miles eagerly enough. And I didn’t mind traveling. It gave me time to think. I watched the scenery change through my windshield. Open fields gave way to stretches of dense trees. Every now and then, I’d spot a quaint farm tucked away in the distance. By the time I got closer to the town of Waycross, much of the stress had already flowed out of me. As always, the farther I drove from the city, the more at ease I felt. The noise and bustle of urban life faded away, replaced by the quiet of the countryside. Out here, a man can hear himself think. Finally, I pulled into Waycross. It was like stepping back in time to a simpler place. It was just a main thoroughfare with a few streets branching off with a handful of shops lined Main Street. I spotted a general store that seemed to double as a diner and a bar, with a hand-painted sign on it that said “Earl’s.” Mine was the only car on the road, and the quiet was different here. It wasn’t the tense silence of a city block at night. It was a peaceful quiet, broken only by the occasional bird call or the distant lowing of cattle. I drove slowly, taking in the buildings. The place was old — the internet had told me that much already — and some of the buildings on Main Street must’ve stood for a century or two. They were well maintained — signs of a community that was proud of its history. I could appreciate that, but I was hoping they wouldn’t be too isolationist. But there would be time for exploring the little town and getting to know its inhabitants later. For now, I wanted to check out my own place. Duration - 9h 32m. Author - Daryl P Depass.
