This quiet town in Maine becomes disturbed by a missing priest who is eventually found dead Father Thomas, let out of prison early, returns to his former parish when the new priest has a heart attack. The parish is divided between forgiveness and resentment about his return. He starts a group to have Father Thomas removed, has an outburst during mass and also goes to see the bishop. Then Father Thomas disappears for weeks until his body is found by a hunter. Detective James Jason, also known as JJ, is assigned to the case. He meticulously investigates Ron Whitlow but can find no concrete evidence that he was involved in Father Thomas death. Nancy and JJ discuss the case and she subtly begins her own investigation. As JJ becomes fonder of Nancy and respects her introspective instincts.
