IT Chapter Two (2019)

9/5/2019
More
We went to see Chapter Two of Stephen King’s IT, and we were both kind of underwhelmed. We were both fans of the first installment, but unfortunately the great acting and interesting characterizations are undermined by hokey horror sequences and what feels like a lot of recycled material from Chapter One. We think it’s an okay film, not a very effective horror movie, and with the cast and material that’s pretty surprising. We’ll be back in a few weeks to take on Ad Astra (and Cecily and I...

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019)

8/1/2019
More
We went to go see Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw tonight, and it's awesome. You either love the F&F franchise or you don't, and if you love it like we love it this movie is going to satisfy. All the hallmarks are there; insane vehicular action, Loony Tunes meets Three Stooges approaches to violence, suspension of disbelief stretching feats of driving and other forms of derring doo. Maybe it's a tad too long, maybe they lost track of what time of day it was in the third act, but it...

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019)

7/25/2019
More
We went and saw "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood", the latest movie written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, starring Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Margot Robbie. It's not his best film, it's certainly not his "worst", but for us it's extremely watchable throughout it's nearly three hour run-time and when it finally goes off the rails in the last reel, hoo-boy. Brad and Leo are having a lot of fun, the film is as gorgeous as you'd expect, and Hollywood looks as magical as it ever has on...

The Lion King (2019)

7/18/2019
More
Jim and A.Ron have seen the "live-action" remake of The Lion King, but why? Why was this film made? I mean, we know the rea$on$ The Mouse is jamming this joyless attempt at cinema down our throats, but really, why? A stellar vocal cast can't even come close to making it worth it. It's hard to think of a more pointless endeavor, and it's \all down hill after the cold open. Stay at home, save your money, and put on your best copy of the original on your biggest screen and crank up the sound....

Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)

7/2/2019
More
Jim and I had the pleasure of taking a European vacation with Spider-Man: Far From Home. Just when you wonder how Marvel will pick up the pieces and continue from Endgame, the drop a super fun Spider-Man sequel on us that manages to be just as delightful as the first with even more heart. Tom Holland was born to play Peter Parker, everyone is having a great time, including the audience. We honestly can't wait to see where Spidey goes next! This podcast is an abridged version of the full,...

Toy Story 4 (2019)

6/20/2019
More
Frankly, we were prepared to be mildly disappointed and to cluck our tongues at the Mouse and wag our fingers at all of his hubris as we sat down to watch Toy Story 4. Nobody asked for this sequel. It was foolish to get this franchise out of the vault after you delivered an absolutely perfect trilogy with the most beautiful ending you could ask for. But you know what? They did it. Toy Story 4 can look it's predecessors square in the eye as it has just as much humor, heart, and a wonderful,...

Men in Black: International (2019)

6/13/2019
More
Jim and I have seen the latest installment in the long running Men in Black franchise, Men in Black: International. And it's okay. It's fun and entertaining, largely because Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth are fun and entertaining people who have an easy chemistry. The plot is twisty, but not very smart, and the whole thing just struggles to find the big red "hyperspace" button that would get it into orbit where it belongs. But if all you're looking for is a bit of 90s nostalgia in a...

Dark Phoenix (2019)

6/6/2019
More
Jim and I went to see the latest X-Men flick, Dark Phoenix. It's not as bad as it's Rotten Tomatoes rating would imply, but it's certainly not good. And it's unfortunately because once again a classic X-Men plotline is burnt (refried, in this case) and all-time great Magneto and Professor X performances by Fassbender and MacElvoy are wasted on a script with muddled characters and paper thin villains. Long time fans of the X-Men will enjoy some great stand alone moments with their favorite...

Aladdin (2019)

5/23/2019
More
If you're wishing for a three-way review of Disney's latest live-action adaptation, Aladdin, then listener you're in luck. Wish granted. Cecily, Jim, and I went to see it tonight with appropriately low expectations, but were very pleasantly surprised at how much fun and energy the movie provided. Better, the script smartly adapted the original, improving it's pacing while also adding depth to Jafar's intrigue and Jasmine's character, making it smarter and more relatable to modern audiences....

Willow (1988)

5/22/2019
More
The Super Serious Film Fest: Fantasy reaches it's thrilling conclusion with a look at 1998's Willow. The brain child of one George Lucas, directed by protege Ron Howard, and starring the delightful Warwick Davis, Willow still struggles to this day to find an audience. It suffers from simultaneously being curiously dark for a family film, but far too simple, uncomplicated, and broad to hold much interest for adults. While it boasted some cutting edge special effects for our day, the best one...

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019)

5/20/2019
More
Jim and I take a belated look at the latest installment in the John Wick saga, Chapter 3: Parabellum. JW3:B, has some of the finest action sequences we've ever seen, but it's also rapidly approaching diminishing returns in terms of quantity over quality. We're all for combat innovations including insane knife work, horse and dog augmented combat, and up-armored adversaries, but there's only so many times you can watch Keanu kill a guy with a gun before you start checking your watch. With...

Excalibur (1981) - Super Serious Film Fest

5/15/2019
More
Excalibur is one of the most ambitious tellings of the legend of King Arthur. It's chock full of knights, castles, and excellent actors. Today we find out if Sir Patrick Stewart and Sir (?... probably) Liam Neeson, among others, can do enough heavy lifting to hold Excalibur on high or if it will forever be a stabbing pain in our rocky hearts. Detective Pikachu (2019)

5/9/2019
More
Novice Pokemon Trainer A.Ron is joined by S Rank Trainer Cecily to break down the action in Detective Pokemon. We were both surprised at how straightforward a kids film this was. To be fair, we weren't expecting Deadpool out of a Ryan Reynolds' starring Pokemon film, but parents looking to be thrown an adult bone over the heads of their children are probably going to be disappointed. Still, it's relentlessly, almost threateningly cute, and the more into Pokemon you are the more you'll...

Reign of Fire (2002) - Super Serious Film Fest

5/1/2019
More
The next installment of Super Serious Film Fest: Fantasy features Reign of Fire, a movie so-close-to-sort-of-kind-of-good that it lands squarely into the realm of "cheesy fun." Aside from Game of Thrones, no film or series has done more to advance the art of CGI dragons as Reign, and no other film even comes close in the coveted shirtless McConaughey vs. Bale category. If you look carefully, you may see an extremely young King Joffrey hiding out among the other plucky young heroes. Please...

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

4/26/2019
More
Jim and I have seen the climax to a decade's worth of world building in the MCU, Avengers: Endgame, and would like to certify it 100% awesome. Sure, you might quibble with a few cameos you don't recognize, and the more you're capable of rolling with the "Rule of Cool" the more you'll appreciate the spectacle they're putting on screen. But it's hard to imagine any fan of superhero movies not respecting what an accomplishment this is; to get so many people across the globe to care about and...
