Season 7, Episode 10. — Kelly Ann Shaw, Partner at Akin Gump. I first met Kelly Ann when I was beginning my own work in international trade. At the time, she was my counterpart in the U.S. Delegation, handling disputes and other complex issues. Season 7, Episode 9. — Sally Bardayán Rivera, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Mission of Panama in Geneva, Switzerland In a remarkably short time, Sally has established herself as one of the most active and respected delegates in Geneva. Her openness, empathy, and collaborative spirit have earned her admiration across missions and institutions. She approaches complex issues with clarity and creativity, but also with a sense of humanity that makes people feel heard and included. In this episode, I had the opportunity to sit down with Sally soon after her appointment as Deputy Permanent Representative of Panama. We spoke about her path into diplomacy—the interests that first drew her in, the challenges she has overcome, and the successes that have marked her journey to Geneva. She reflected on what this new role means to her and how she sees it as both a responsibility and a vote of confidence in her abilities. It was a true joy to record this episode with her. I’ve been attending the Neuchâtel Film Festival for years, and this year, I had the pleasure of attending the screening of Johanna Moder’s Mother’s Baby, a psychological thriller inspired by her own experiences of becoming a mother. In this episode, I sit down with Arne Kohlweyer, the film’s co-writer and a consummate storyteller. Our conversation covers his early fascination with cinema, the path that led him to screenwriting, and the balancing act of sustaining a career in the film industry. We also dive into how Mother’s Baby came to him, the creative challenges he and Johanna navigated in shaping the story, and the themes they wanted to bring forward. Season 7, Episode 5. Ambassador Gustavo Lunazzi, Argentine Ambassador to Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein & Permanent Representative to the WTO. Ambassador Lunazzi, a consummate diplomat with a long career representing Argentina in the Multilateral Trading System, brings unique insights from his experience in the dispute settlement system. I had heard nothing but good things about him from close friends, and still, I was impressed by his candidness, openness, and overall warmth. We talked about how he got into trade, which had to do with luck, some lessons he learned through his various postings and representing Argentina in various dispute settlement processes. He also talks about how things have changed in the WTO over the years. We also discussed his current dual role, which includes serving as Argentina's ambassador to Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein, and as Permanent Representative to the WTO. Season 7, Episode 3. Amb. Ronald Saborío, Mission of Costa Rica to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva, Switzerland. I had an insightful conversation with Ambassador Saborío, who has had a long and successful career in trade diplomacy, becoming a reference point in everything to do with the WTO. We dived into a wide range of topics, including the future of international trade and diplomacy. I met him at the beginning of my career in trade when I attended my first meeting of the Dispute Settlement Body Special Session a few years back. The discussions during those sessions were very technical and detailed, and they have informed the way I view discussions and negotiations at the WTO ever since. Ambassador Saborío also discussed his career, the good, the bad, and the ugly, but overall, he had a very optimistic view of what lay ahead. It was a pleasure talking to him, and I just wished I had recorded the conversation after the episode because he shared some great stories about what has happened in the WTO and how we got to where we are today. Season 7, Episode 2. Stephen Fevrier, Senior Advisor to the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva, Switzerland. Stephen's career has been deeply intertwined with trade and development, particularly revolving around the WTO. His extensive experience means that if it happened at the WTO, he likely witnessed it firsthand! Hailing from Saint Lucia, a Caribbean gem, Stephen is part of a cadre of exceptional trade professionals from the island. Season 6, Episode 12. Andres Veiel, Filmmaker. Andres is a successful filmmaker with a long career stretching back to the early 90’s. I met with him after the screening of his latest film at the Zurich Film Festival, the documentary “Riefenstahl”, which unearths new information on the controversial filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl. During our conversation, we talked about how he got into films and learned from Krzysztof Kieslowski, and we also talked about memory and the stories we tell ourselves. He discussed the development of his latest film and some of the main challenges in telling this story. DDG Johanna Hill has been involved with the WTO since its inception and has worked directly with it at various points in her career. Her career in multilateral and bilateral affairs is long, and she has also worked in the private sector. We had an insightful conversation covering a wide range of topics, from her early years in El Salvador to her commitment to education, which led her to Tufts University and Columbia University. She then worked for El Salvador’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Economy, where she was appointed as Vice Minister of Economy. He is a consummate diplomat who got into Trade and never left. He was posted in Geneva as the Deputy Permanent Representative for the Mission of Australia to the WTO back in 2012, and although he didn’t initially intend to return, he is back as Ambassador with the intention and goal to deliver on many of the pending items we are currently working on at the WTO. Season 6, Episode 7. Dmitry Grozoubinski. Executive Director at Geneva Trade Platform in Geneva. Dmitry wears many hats, including author and overall point of reference for International Trade. If you want to learn more about Trade, you will probably run into him. Before all this, he had a successful career as an Australian Trade Diplomat, where I met him. I found out we are sort of kindred spirits. We both appreciate a good Aaron Sorkin dialogue and are both introverts. Many people find this last part difficult to believe. We talk about many things: his journey to Australia, why he became interested in International Relations, his experiences at the WTO, how he transitioned to the ICTSD, and how he suffered its demise. This actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise, leading him to become a personality in social media. All this led him to his current position at the Geneva Trade Platform. We also delve into his latest book, “Why Politicians Lie About Trade... and What You Need to Know About It!” This book, with its unique voice and ability to simplify complex concepts, is a must-read for anyone interested in trade policy. Season 6, Episode 6. Pablo M. Bentes is a partner at Baker McKenzie Geneva and heads the firm's global WTO disputes practice. I've known Pablo for a while and I even shared his office while at the WTO's Appellate Body. One of the things I was glad to find there was the sense of camaraderie; it was like a big family. So, we had to talk about that, but I wanted to cover much more than that since Pablo has had an exciting career beyond that. We discussed how he left Brazil to study and his experiences working abroad, eventually leading him to the WTO. We also talked about what led to his decision to leave the WTO, which I found very interesting. Season 6, Episode 5. Anna Morawiec Mansfield. Legal Counsel at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). I recently met Anna and was so impressed that I had to invite her to the podcast. Even then, I could not have imagined the amazing conversation we would have. I have been doing this for a while, but a few conversations have really stood out, and this is one of them. Anna's story is a testament to resilience, determination, and character. Like many immigrants, she has faced numerous challenges, but as Anna herself describes it, overcoming challenges is her and many immigrants' superpower. Anna tells us about growing up in Poland and moving to the United States. Then, before going to law school, she worked in many places, always with an international outlook, and eventually decided that law school would give her the tools to continue pursuing what she really wanted to do. Then, almost as if she was destined to, she made it to the State Department, which eventually brought her to Geneva. After a few years, she moved to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). I talked to her a few days after the successful conclusion of the WIPO Treaty on Intellectual Property, Genetic Resources, and Associated Traditional Knowledge. I was truly inspired by Anna's story, and I look forward to sharing it with you. I can't wait for you to listen to this. Marisa Goldstein is an experienced lawyer who has worked in the Legal Affairs Dvision at the WTO for many years, and she has certainly left her mark. I have known her since the beginning of my career in International Trade, and she is a well-known and well-liked figure in the community. We have collaborated a couple of times and even raced in the same races. In our conversation, we delved into her career, law school, international relations, and the fascinating journey that led her to Geneva. We also explored the impactful work she's been doing at the WTO, including the upcoming 22nd edition of the John H. Jackson Moot Court Competition with the European Law Students' Association (ELSA). We discussed the challenges she faced, the lessons she learned, and her advice for aspiring international trade practioners. Her career path is truly inspiring.
