In this podcast episode we want to introduce you to our BCEN friend, Michael Gooch. Dr. Michael Gooch is an emergency and flight nurse practitioner, critical care paramedic, and seasoned clinician with over 30 years of experience in emergency and transport medicine. Based at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, he has completed more than 1,700 patient transports with the LifeFlight team. He is also an Assistant Professor of Nursing at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing and a nationally recognized speaker, author, and educator. Dr. Gooch holds leadership roles with the American Academy of Emergency Nurse Practitioners and the Air and Surface Transport Nurses Association. He is a Fellow of multiple professional organizations and was recently honored with the Distinguished Certified Flight Registered Nurse Award by BCEN in 2025. From prehospital care to the ER, critical care, and transport, Michael’s career has spanned nearly every corner of emergency nursing. Rebecca Geyer brings over two decades of diverse nursing experience, with the majority of her career rooted in Trauma ICU care. Her clinical background spans neurosurgical ICU, pediatric pre-op and PACU, the emergency department, and roles in trauma performance improvement and injury prevention. She currently serves as the Director of Trauma Performance Improvement for the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation (PTSF), the accrediting body for all trauma centers across the state. In her current role, Rebecca leads statewide initiatives to advance trauma care quality and outcomes. From ICU to ED, Pre-op to PACU, pediatrics to process improvement, Rebecca has kept a fresh view of nursing as she's reimagined her career over 20 years. He has also worked extensively in pre-hospital settings, including medevac flights in the high Arctic, EMS, ski patrol, and disaster relief. Graham holds a Bachelor of Nursing from the University of Manitoba and a Master of Nursing from the University of Calgary, along with specialty training in critical care from Mount Royal University. He is credentialed as a Certified Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN), Certified Transport Registered Nurse (CTRN), and Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP), and is currently pursuing studies to become a nurse practitioner. In this podcast episode we want to introduce you to our BCEN friend, Amanda Werner. Amanda is an experienced nurse with a deep passion for neuro care. She’s dedicated to advancing the knowledge and skills of her team, ensuring that patients receive the most cutting-edge treatments available. Her impact spans across multiple hospitals and countless miles—but her mission remains the same: better outcomes for all. In 2018, Amanda transitioned into the role of Stroke Coordinator and, by 2021, became the Stroke Program Manager for the northern Colorado region. In this role, she supports four hospitals, two freestanding emergency departments, and collaborates closely with regional EMS agencies, referring facilities, and neighboring stroke programs. Amanda is recognized for developing workflows that adapt to various facility needs. Her focus is on clinical education and sharing strategies that support stroke programs, especially in smaller or resource-limited settings. Harriet began her journey in psychiatry in 1969 before moving into adult critical care and emergency medicine. In 1982, she joined Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago—now Lurie Children's Hospital—where she worked in the NICU and played a key role in launching the Neonatal Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team in 1985. Harriet also founded the hospital’s resuscitation program in 2001, expanding education in life-saving certifications such as ACLS, BLS, PALS, NRP, and more. Beyond her clinical work, Harriet is deeply committed to community outreach and philanthropic service. She has been volunteering at her local homeless shelter since 1996, running a weekly clinic, and has participated in 28 humanitarian mission trips across nine countries. She remains actively involved with the Emergency Nurses Association at both the state and national levels. Reginald Santiago is an inpatient care coordinator and case manager at Duke University Hospital’s Raleigh campus. Over the past 30 years in healthcare, he has served in roles as a paramedic, adjunct paramedic instructor, tactical medical instructor, and Special Operations Forces Medical Instructor specializing in prolonged field care (PFC). Additionally, Reginald is the creator and host of the Paramedic2RN podcast. Reginald’s educational background includes an Associate’s degree of Applied Sciences in Emergency Medical Science, an ADN from a Paramedic to RN bridge program, and as well as his BSN. In this 100th podcast episode we want to introduce you to our BCEN Friend and CEO, Janie Schumaker. Janie Schumaker is a dedicated healthcare professional whose journey began in a nursing home doing laundry. She furthered her education as a certified nursing assistant to LPN and finally obtaining her RN. Janie quickly recognized her passion for the Emergency Department, where she spent most of her career at the bedside and in nursing leadership. As the CEO of the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing for the past seven years, Janie is a fierce advocate for nurses, emphasizing the importance of professional development and specialty certification. Janie holds multiple degrees, advanced certifications, and is an active member in several nursing organizations. In this podcast episode we want to introduce you to our BCEN Friends, Sean Elwell and Adam Oliver. Sean Elwell is the Senior Director of Emergency Services, Critical Care Transport, and the Pediatric Trauma Center at Nemours Children’s Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware, where he has dedicated over 21 years of service. Starting his career as an EMT, Sean transitioned to become a registered nurse and earned his Doctor of Nursing Practice from Wilmington University. He holds a master’s degree in nursing leadership and health systems management from Drexel University, graduating Summa Cum Laude. A recognized leader in his field, Sean has published numerous articles and presented at regional and national conferences. He is a Past-President of the Society of Trauma Nurses and currently serves as Secretary/Treasurer on the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing. In addition to his professional roles, Sean actively contributes to his community as the Mayor of Elsinboro Township, where he has served for 18 years, including 14 years as Mayor. He has held various leadership positions within local government and is currently on the Executive Board for the New Jersey League of Municipalities, set to become First Vice-President this November. Sean also dedicates time to volunteer with the Elsinboro Fire Company, where he serves as Chief. His extensive experience and commitment to both healthcare and public service make him a respected leader in his community. Adam Oliver is a dedicated healthcare professional with over two decades of experience in the emergency medical field. He resides in Gilliam, Louisiana, located in northern Caddo Parish, approximately 30 miles north of Shreveport. Currently Adam serves as the Director of Integrated Health for LifeNet, Inc. and manages three rotor-wing assets and one fixed-wing asset within the Air Division, while also overseeing the development of community paramedic and telehealth programs. As a passionate advocate for community service, Adam is the Mayor of Gilliam and has previously served as a town council member. His commitment to public safety is further exemplified by his ten-year service as a Board Commissioner for Caddo Fire District Seven, which operates in a large rural area. Recently appointed to the Hospital Service District board, he plays a vital role in supporting the North Caddo Medical Center, a critical access hospital that includes five rural health clinics, two pharmacies, and a dental clinic. Since a young age, Adam has been committed to serving others in their most vulnerable moments. His diverse experiences as a paramedic, emergency nurse, ICU nurse, and flight nurse have shaped his approach to healthcare and community engagement, reinforcing his belief in the importance of compassion and support in times of need.
