Subscriber-only episode When you were a student you got concessions. When you completed your apprenticeship you got the acknowledgement of being a Tradesman. There was a public acknowledgement that you had given up certain things to attain new knowledge or skills which would benefit the society. But modern society doesn't really recognise the significance of working towards getting your Blackbelt in any martial art. It takes so much time, energy and focus over a long period of time 10-15 years. But we are not in it for the recognition so who cares right? Wrong. As practitioners of the art whether you be a frothy newbie or a salty veteran we need to better appreciate the demand of this thing we are giving our life to and how important it actually is.

There is a definite time to expect high standards, analyse and critique what you are doing... but do not keep breaking things down and criticising when it is time to perform. If you spend more time around people who don't care about BJJ this attitude will rub off on you, the power of social osmosis does really affect the way we view the world. If you are questioning your dedication to the art, ask yourself are you in the Habit of practicing BJJ? If you aren't consistently training at least 3 x per week you are no longer in the habit which may put you on a downward spiral... and ultimately may result in your life taking a different path- which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

What Body Type Is Best For BJJ?

Body type and limb length was never discussed in the earlier days of BJJ but it does have a big impact on the way you play the Jiu-Jitsu game. In MMA the tale of the Tape, height, weight and reach - Arm span are all factors that can give you an advantage. This holds true for BJJ but no one is talking about it. You might be playing a type of BJJ game that may not suit your body's proportions which may lead to unnecessary injury.
