Iowa Army National Guard Public Affairs Soldier Sara Robinson, shares her DMOS experience as Labral Tear Impringement Repair Patient. Dr. Jason Sullivan and Sara visited about her journey and commitment to getting back to living after her surgery. ​

Patrick Sullivan, MD, and his son Jason Sullivan, MD are two orthopedic surgeons here at DMOS. In this Joint Effort episode, the father-son duo chat about their upbringing, family life, education, and even share a few funny stories! Learn about how Dr. Jason Sullivan followed in his father’s footsteps in becoming an orthopedic surgeon. Dr. Jason Sullivan explains, “When I was growing up, you never said, ‘hey, you need to do orthopedics.’ I think I just saw a pretty good career, and I thought it would keep me intellectually stimulated.” Dr. Patrick Sullivan stated the importance of making your own career choices, “It’s very interesting that you made the independent choice, and you’re happy with it like I was; I’m happy and proud of you for that. I think everyone has to find their own way to what they want to do.” Over their time at DMOS, they have had cases where they could combine their skillset and work alongside one another. Working together has allowed the two to learn from each other’s surgical experiences and expertise. Dr. Jason Sullivan exclaimed, “That to me was a heck of a lot of fun.” They both enjoy the times they have gotten to work together and hope to do more cases together in the future. As for the next generation of Sullivans, is orthopedics in the cards? Dr. Jason asked Dr. Patrick if he would encourage any of his children to do orthopedics. “Here’s what I’d tell them to do. Find out what you’re good at. Try a whole bunch of things; see where your natural interests, skills, and intellect range is. Then find a career in that sphere that allows you independence and to be sort of self-employed, so you have more control of your world and enjoy what you do.” The Sullivan’s have a combined total of over 40 years at DMOS. The Grand View Vikings Wrestling is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and have won the NAIA Wrestling Championship 8 consecutive years from 2012 to 2019. As the Head Wrestling Coach, Nick Mitchell started the first-ever wrestling team at Grand View University. The program began in the 2008-2009 season. The Drake Bulldogs football are an NCAA Division 1 Football Championship Subdivision non-scholarship college football program representing Drake University and Des Moines, Iowa. About Todd Stepsis Todd Stepsis, is the architect and Head Football Coach of the University of Drake football team. Stepsis is the 27th head coach in Drake history and took the reins of the program after five seasons as its defensive coordinator. In his first season as Head Coach, 21 student-athletes earned Pioneer Football League honors, the second-most in the PFL. In addition to the Bulldogs recognized for their play on the field, Drake’s three selections to the CoSIDA Academic All-America team were the most among all NCAA Division I programs. In his previous role with the Bulldog football as the defensive coordinator, Stepsis built the Drake defense into one of the nation’s top units and coached a total of 42 all-conference selections. About John Klein, MD Dr. John Klein received his bachelor’s degree and doctorate of medicine from Creighton University and Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska. After medical school he completed a preliminary general surgery internship at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Following this internship, he served two years as a Flight Surgeon for the United States Air Force at Luke Air Force Base in Glendale, Arizona. Dr. Klein then returned to Iowa for anesthesia residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Upon completion of residency, he continued training by doing a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Anthony Tedesco discusses the causes, symptoms, and treatments of biceps tendon and labrum injuries including biceps tendinitis, tears or ruptures, and superior labrum anterior to posterior (SLAP) tears. Biceps tendinitis is an inflammation or irritation of the upper biceps tendon that connects to the bones in the shoulder. The biceps tendons attach the biceps muscle to the bones in the shoulder and in the elbow. Superior labrum anterior-posterior (SLAP) tear is an injury to the labrum of the shoulder, which is the ring of cartilage that surrounds the socket of the shoulder joint. About Anthony Tedesco, DO Dr. Anthony Tedesco began his undergraduate education at Saint Leo University in Florida and then moved to Nova Southeastern University to complete his graduate degree in Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his residency at Affinity Medical Center in Canton, Ohio before traveling across the country to San Diego, California to finish an additional year of fellowship experience in Orthopedic Sports Medicine at San Diego Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine. Dr. Brock Reiter discusses hand and upper extremity nerve entrapments and the connection with neuropathy including; carpal tunnel, cubital tunnel, radial tunnel, and tennis elbow. Neuropathy often causes pain and numbness as a result of damage to the peripheral nerves, the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. Carpal tunnel syndrome is numbness and tingling in the hand and arm that is caused by a pinched nerve in the wrist. Cubital tunnel syndrome, also known as ulnar nerve entrapment, occurs when the ulnar nerve, which travels down your neck into your hand, becomes compressed or irritated. Radial tunnel syndrome is caused by pressure on the radial nerve, often at the elbow. Tennis elbow is inflammation, irritation, or sometimes microtearing of the tendons that connect the forearm muscles on the outside of the elbow. About Brock Reiter, MD Dr. Brock Reiter is a La Porte City, Iowa native who attended Iowa State University for his undergraduate degree and then traveled to Chicago Medical School to complete his graduate degree. His residency and fellowship were both in Indianapolis at Indiana University and the Indiana Hand to Shoulder Center respectively. Dr. Reiter specializes in hand and upper extremity fracture surgery and soft tissue reconstruction, as well as shoulder arthroscopy & arthroplasty, elbow arthroscopy, arthroplasty, complex wrist and hand surgeries for trauma or arthritis, and nerve disorders including compressive neuropathies (carpal or cubital tunnel syndrome) and associated traumatic nerve injuries. An avid cyclist, Dr. Reiter once rode his bike from San Francisco to Washington DC (over 4,000 miles!) as part of a charity team to raise funds and awareness for people with disabilities. Dr. Lea Gunnell discusses her career change from engineering to orthopedics, ankle sprains, arthritis, and fusion vs total ankle replacement. Arthritis is inflammation that may cause pain and stiffness of one or more of your joints, it is common in the smaller joints of the foot and ankle. Ankle fusion, also known as arthrodesis, is a procedure to fuse the bones of the ankle into one piece. Total ankle replacement, also known as arthroplasty, is a procedure to replace the damaged articular surfaces of the ankle. About Lea Gunnell, MD Dr. Lea Gunnell joins DMOS Orthopaedic Centers with years of foot, ankle, and lower extremity surgical experience, practicing orthopedics in Michigan and Texas. She started her educational journey with an undergraduate degree in engineering from North Carolina State University. She then attended the University of Rochester School of Medicine in New York, where she earned her Doctor of Medicine degree in 2011. After completing a five-year residency at Michigan State, Dr. Gunnell traveled to the University of Washington to complete her fellowship at the Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Dr. Gunnell’s long list of medical, teaching, and leadership experiences has prepared her to handle simple and complex foot, ankle, and lower extremity procedures. Her undergraduate degree in materials science and engineering gives her a unique perspective on the mechanics and force of bone, muscle and ligament injuries. This distinctive viewpoint, combined with her many years of medical experience, helps her deliver the highest comprehensive care for patients with foot, ankle, and lower extremity pain, injury, or trauma. Outside of work, Dr. Gunnell, an animal lover, founded the Great Escapes Horse Rescue and Sanctuary, which provides care, training, and homes for over 40 horses and donkeys. Dr. Julie Grundberg discusses Plantar Fasciitis, Onychomycosis, Bunions, and Morton's Neuroma. Plantar Fasciitis is a common cause of heel pain involving inflammation of a thick band of tissue on the bottom of your foot connecting the heel bone to your toes. Onychomycosis is a fungal infection of the nails that causes thickening and separation from the nail bed. Bunions are a bump that forms on the joint at the base of the big toe when the big toe pushes against the second toe. Morton’s Neuroma is the thickening of the tissue around a nerve leading to the toes. About Julie Grundberg, DPM Dr. Julie Grundberg is a Des Moines native. Dr. John Gaffey talks about Dupuytren’s contracture and ganglion cysts. Dupuytren’s contracture is an abnormal thickening of the tissue just beneath the skin. This thickening occurs in the palm and can extend into the fingers. Ganglion Cysts are very common lumps within the hand and wrist that occur adjacent to joints or tendons. He followed that with a fellowship in Interventional Pain at Georgia Pain Physicians in Marietta, Georgia, where he focused on interventional spine procedures. Dr. Acebey is fluent in conversational Spanish and is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation, pain medicine, sports medicine, and electrodiagnostic medicine. His specialties include diagnosis and treatment of back and neck conditions as well as peripheral nerve problems.
