The Ramsgate Murder Mystery News of the Times Episode 313 | 1893 It is 1893 Ramsgate and Mr Noel, butcher and Wesleyan treasurer and Sunday school teacher, has come home from the Sunday school class he has just taught only to find himself locked out of his house. His wife, who should be home, does not answer. Mr Noel goes to the side window, looks in, only to see his wife dead in a pool of blood. The family dog which is devoted to her is standing guard by her body. The apparent house robbery has been staged and there was strangely no noise heard from the dog who had a reputation of viciousness and loud barking with any stranger. The Ramsgate murder mystery gripped the headlines as local police investigated the crime. Ruthless Richard Edwards News of the Times Episode 312 | 1842 It is 1848 in the mining town of Merthyr Tydfil in Wales. 72 year old Tamar Edwards has gone missing from her small dilapidated cottage within the village. Her son, who has just recently reunited with his wife, has moved her into his mother’s cottage and explains his mother’s disappearance as her having gone to visit in the next parish. The couple sleep in his mother’s bed. It is payday and Edwards, Tamar’s son, must make the trip into the next town to pick up his wages. His instruction to his wife is to not look under the bed. The wife consults with her friends and neighbours who think she should look under the bed in which she and her husband have been sleeping. A gruesome discovery awaits. From here, accusations fly as to who was actually responsible for the body under the bed. Stories of Murders of Mothers News of the Times Episode 311 | 1775 & 1848 The killing of the mother, Matricide, has historically been considered one of the blackest of crimes. In today’s episode we look at two cases where the adult offspring has planned and carried out the murder of their respective mothers with chilling coldness. Our first case from 1775 involves a single mother who runs a girl’s school. Her son, who lives at home and does not seem to have held a viable job, resents being reprimanded or told what to do. Just as she goes up to make his bed, the horror begins. Our second case from 1848 involves a very sad case of elder abuse which seems to have increased in intensity until a fatal blow followed by an attempt to burn the body by her 50 year old daughter. Stories of Murdered Mistresses News of the Times Episode 310 | 1775 & 1851 Our first story takes place in 1775. The young orphan that was brought into the household of well-respected ex-soldier John Bolton had developed into a beauty. Bolton takes advantage of his position and engages in an intimacy with her. And then she becomes pregnant. The case took on the highest alert possible at that time. Our second case from 1850 was a love match between two youngsters of different social class backgrounds, both respected. Despite the social class differences, an intimacy develops, and the young woman becomes pregnant. Very pregnant, and it would seme the majority of the village is aware of it. The young gentleman is set to marry a woman of his own class, as decided by his family, who also brings wealth. The sticking point is his pregnant mistress. The Warley Gap Murder News of the Times Episode 308 | 1903 It is 1903 in the beautiful area of Warley Gap, in Essex. Respectable local girl, Maud Garret, 19, is found terribly brutally slain in a field not far from the 2nd battalion Essex. Maud had been known to be walking with a soldier there – an Edwardian version of dating – and had been seen by many. The murder of a local girl is bad enough, but Maud has been savagely outraged as well as having been beaten multiple times on her face with what is believed to be a cane. Chilling Charles Boyle News of the Times Episode 308 | 1924 A young girl, upon arriving back to the flat shared with her mother, finds herself unable to get in. Impatiently knocking on the door and receiving no response, she goes to a neighbour and borrows the ley. Opening the door reveals a scene of horror with her mother, and two neighbour children, lying in pools of blood – their throats horrible slashed. This shocking story at the time was used as an impetus to attempt to renew efforts of support to lower income families and give aid to those in the tenement areas of Glasgow. The story of alcoholism, deprivation, and mental illness was both disturbing and horrific. We have kept the language of the day, some of which most certainly and quite rightly is inappropriate today. Murderous Stories of Inconvenient In-Laws News of the Times Episode 307 | 1837 & 1861 Those pesky n-laws who get in the way of the whole purpose of having gotten married in the first place. Our first case takes place in 1839. Charles Bartlett, who works as an entertainer with a travelling show, has met and married a young girl, scarcely 18, who brings with her an initial dowry of £45! Upon her mother’s death, she will inherit another £50! Sadly, the mother-in-law is shot at from behind within a month of the marriage. Charles was the last person to see her alive… Our second case from 1861 takes place in the peaceable parish of Anglesey, North Wales. Richard Rowlands has married the recently widowed daughter of a prosperous farmer. Unfortunately, the father rather despises Richard and gives him a deadline to pack up his things, and his new family, and remove himself from his property. There is one day left before he is required to leave when coincidentally, the father-in-law is beaten to death on a lonely pathway as he is walking home. The Killing at Coachford News of the Times Episode 303 | 1887 It is 1887, just in the preamble of the ripper killings that will leave a long-lasting scar on the country’s consciousness. This was a story that consumed the UK. Dr Cross, a highly respected retired military man, and it sounds like a bit of curmudgeon with the locals, has shocked society with his revolving door of buried wife followed quickly by marriage of a girl who could easily be his grandchild. There had been fights and recriminations between the good Dr and Mrs Cross before she passed. During her illness, her husband had become unexpectedly newly caring and solicitous. With the speedy burial and even more speedy marriage, neighbours talked. Police listened. Two Tales of Revenge News of the Times Episode 302 | 1849 & 1934 In todays episode we look at two tales were mothers feature strongly as does revenge. Our first story from 1849 sees young John Ward making advances to the household servant which is not reciprocated. Wishing to marry her, the mother steps in forcibly with fatal consequences. Our second story from 1934 is highly unusual in several ways: the age of the bride, the carrier pigeon, the strong role of the mothers, and the twisting path of the trials. Young Violet is not finding married life something she wants to do, so she goes back to mother. The news does not go down well with her husband. The Regent Square Murder: Scotland Yard Casebook News of the Times Episode 301 | 1917 C1917 London and in posh Regent Square a bundle has been found left by an early morning street sweeper. Upon investigation, the body of a woman, missing both head and hands, is found mostly nude and mangled. Scotland Yard are brought on. With no head or hands, identifying the victim is difficult. The Babington Plot against Queen Elizabeth I News of the Times Episode 299 | 1586 It is 1587 and England is undergoing simmering tension within the country, and externally from international pressure. The Pope has ex-communicated Queen Elizabeth I and actively encourages true Catholics to remover her from the throne. The figure head for the opposition is the imprisoned Mary Stuart, Queen of the Scots. This and other failed attempts to oust Queen Elizabeth leads to the infamous Babington Plot within England contrived in part by the potential assassin, Anthony Babington, who is, actually the unknowing puppet of Queen Elisabeth’s spymaster, Sir Francis Walsingham This story involves spies, counter-espionage, double agents, royalty and treachery leading to the execution of an anointed queen. The Southwestern Train Murder News of the Times Episode 298 | 1901 It is 1901 and there are three people travelling towards London in a third class railway carriage. All of the sudden, one of the passengers gets up, shoots point blank at a fellow passenger, and then shoots the other in the face when she speaks. Aristocratic Chronicles: Two Tales of Murderous Philips News of the Times Episode 297 | 1678 & 1688 In today’s episode we look at two murderous cases, within aristocratic circles, involving protagonists named Philip. In our first case of 1678, Charles II - the party king - is the reigning monarch. Philip, The 7th earl of Pembroke seems to have inherited his father's notorious quick and violent temper. Having just been released from the Tower of London, he visits a pub where he casually meets two others. Upset by a cutting remark made to him, he kicks his victim to death. It is quite possible; this was the first of three murders to take place as his hands. Our second case from 1688 involves the eldest son of Sir James Stansfield referred to as a dissolute drunkard and who regularly racks up thousands of pounds of debt. His despisal for his father is very well known and exacerbated by his father recently cutting him out of his will. Rumours are spread about the insanity of Sir James by his now disinherited son. The Murder of the Duchess de Praslin News of the Times Episode 296 | 1847 It is 1847 Paris France and astoundingly, the Duchess of Praslin has been found in a room, bolted from the inside, shockingly brutally murdered. She has put up a tremendous fight as bloody clumps of hair are found dotted around the room. In her death throes, she managed to violently ring the bell, thus bringing the skeleton staff rushing to her aid - most probably unexpectedly by the murderer. This case rocked Europe and helped to overthrow France's governemnt of the time under King Louis Philippe. The letters left behind tragically and grapohically spell put the anguish of a womn overthrown for a younger model after decades of marraige together. The Assassin Madame Weiss News of the Times Episode 53 | 1840 In 1891 The international papers were fascinated by the story of Madame Weiss and the murderous love triangle in which she took centre stage. Madame Weiss, married to ex-army soldier M Weiss and with two children, falls passionately in love with visiting engineer M Roque. Their torrid romance becomes known to her husband who forgives her and shoulders some of the blame for his wife’s deception. M Roque, a man of strong passion and strong ideas, commands Madame Weiss to kill her husband. There was talk in the press that she had been hypnotised to become her husband’s assassin at the behest of her lover. The evidence that she had been poisoning her husband became known from a torn-up letter pieced together by a friend who was suspicious. But the realisation of her treachery is only the start of this dramatic story filled with twists and turns. Murder Among the Monied - Frightful Fridays News of the Times Episode 294 | 1746 & 1885 Our first case from 1746 London, involves footman Matthew Henderson who has worked in the Dalrymple household, the master of the house will soon become Lord Dalrymple, for five years. Whether cheekily or not, he steps on Lady Dalrymple’s toe which she scolds him for. The scolding does not sit well with Matthew, and he plots a bloody revenge. Our second case from 1885 takes place on the grounds of the spectacular Blenheim Palace, Home of Lord Marlborough and birthplace of Winston Churchill. Two groundsmen, who have a history of dislike for each other are forced to work on the same project together. What starts as a small argument regarding a tar brush becomes grows so contentious that one of them ends up beaten to death. Stories of Sibling Murder News of the Times Episode 293 | 1873-1875 The killing of a sibling, another child one has grown up with, without the motivation of financial gain, is relatively rare. In today’s episode we look at three cases where the sibling has been convicted of their sibling’s murder. Our first case from 1873 is particularly odd as it recounts the story of a woman of some 75 years who murders her older sister, with a pitchfork. Her older sister is around 80 years of age. Our second case from 1874 recounts the murder of a brother who disapproves of his much younger sister’s budding romance. She is found in a field with her throat slashed. Our last case from 1875 Jersey retells the murder of a sister and the attempted murder of her husband. This case is particularly unique as it involves a public execution some 7 years after public executions had been abolished in England.
